The 11 - 15 Chevrolet Volt -- 1.25in. CURT Trailer Hitch + Ball Mount + Cover + Lock Kit by CURT HWA622 (Part #HWA622) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, Curt part number 11221 is designed for the Chevrolet Volt. This is a receiver hitch installation that requires trunk pan access and underbody panel modification.
The manual specifies gross load capacity and tongue weight ratings, but these values are not legible in the provided documentation. Contact Curt Manufacturing technical support at 1-877-287-8634 for the exact capacity specifications. You must also verify that you do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Required tools are: silicone caulk, knife, screwdriver or pry bar, ratchet, torque wrench, T-15 Torx bit, 7mm socket, 10mm socket, 17mm socket, 3/4" socket, drill, and 17/32" drill bit.
The kit includes: (2) 1/2-13 UNC carriage bolts, grade 8, 1-3/4" long (part 10-10272); (2) .250 x 3.00 x 4.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP28); (1) .188 x 1.50 x 3.00" round hole spacer (CM-SP34); (2) 1/2-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8 (20-00062); (2) 7/16" conical tooth washers (30-00163); (2) M10x1.5x25 hex cap screws, class 10.9 (10-10475); and (1) .250 x 1.00 x 1.50" round hole spacer (CM-SP50).
Yes. You must clear the trunk contents and remove the plastic trunk pan insert by removing (4) 10mm nuts. The steel trunk pan, main battery, and audio battery will then be visible. You will work with the steel trunk pan in place but will need access to it for drilling and spacer installation.
You must remove the underbody panel by removing (8) 7mm hex head screws, (2) T-15 button head Torx screws, and (1) plastic body panel fastener. This panel is removed to access the frame rail and later trimmed to fit around the hitch receiver tube.
Yes. You must drill a hole in the trunk pan for one of the 1/2" fasteners. The manual specifies: locate the existing 1 3/8" plug in the bottom of the trunk pan, remove it carefully, measure 4 1/2" toward the front of the vehicle, and drill a hole at that location. Use a 17/32" drill bit.
Yes. You must trim the underbody panel in two places: (1) trim a 2 1/2" x 4" square hole from the center of the underbody panel for the receiver tube, and (2) notch the front of the underbody panel for side plate clearance. Trim diagrams are provided in the manual showing the exact dimensions and locations.
1. Clear trunk and remove plastic trunk pan insert (4 x 10mm nuts). 2. Remove underbody panel (8 x 7mm screws, 2 x T-15 Torx screws, 1 x plastic fastener). 3. Remove 1 3/8" trunk pan plug; measure 4 1/2" forward and drill a hole for the second 1/2" fastener using a 17/32" bit. 4. Apply 1/4" silicone caulk bead around holes and spacers; place spacers centered over trunk pan holes; insert 1/2" carriage bolts into spacers. 5. Raise hitch onto bolts; loosely install 1/2" hex flange nuts and M10 hex bolts with conical tooth washers. 6. Torque M10 bolts to 48 lb-ft and 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft. 7. Trim underbody panel (2 1/2" x 4" square hole and front notch). 8. Reinstall underbody panel and plastic trunk pan insert.
The spacers (CM-SP28, CM-SP34, and CM-SP50) are placed in the trunk directly centered over the trunk pan holes. They support the carriage bolts and distribute the load. Silicone caulk is applied around the holes and spacers to seal them.
Torque all M10 bolts to 48 lb-ft and all 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft. These fasteners must be torqued after the hitch is loosely installed and positioned correctly.
A 17/32" drill bit is required to drill the hole in the trunk pan for the second 1/2" fastener.
All non-trailer loads applied to this hitch must be supported by Curt part number 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The Curt 11221 has its own capacity rating, but your vehicle's limit is the controlling factor. Verify both specifications before towing.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This is a routine maintenance requirement to keep the hitch safe and functional.
The manual states the hitch is designed for use with ball mount part number D-55001 or 45501. A euro mount option is available (part numbers 45571 for 1-7/8" ball and 45572 for 2" ball). Consult Curt Manufacturing or your dealer for compatibility with other ball mounts.
Yes. The manual instructs you to carefully remove the 1 3/8" plug from the bottom of the trunk pan and return it to the owner for future use. Keep it in a safe place.
