Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Fiat 500 (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Fiat 500 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The first step is to remove the rear plastic diffuser by removing 2 T15 torx screws and 2 5/16" screws from the bottom, then carefully disconnecting clips from inside the plastic. Pull the piece gently away from the rear of the vehicle. Set it aside for trimming and reassembly later.
Lower the exhaust by removing rubber exhaust hangers from hanger rods in one location on the driver side and one location on the passenger side. The additional exhaust hanger bracket on the passenger side must be completely removed from the vehicle frame (if equipped). Remove and return the bracket and hardware to the vehicle owner.
The hitch mounts to 2 M8 weld nuts and 3 existing holes in the vehicle frame. The weld nuts are located on the frame rails and can be found by removing protective tape. Square plugs in the frame rails reveal square access holes; remove these plugs to access the mounting points. Return the plugs to the vehicle owner after installation.
Yes. Using a 7/16" drill bit, you must enlarge a hole rearward of the square holes on the driver side frame rail. This enlargement is necessary to accommodate the carriage bolts and spacer blocks that mount the hitch.
Fishwiring is a technique used to route the 7/16" carriage bolts and spacer blocks through the frame mounting holes. You thread the 7/16" carriage bolts and spacer blocks up through the square hole and down through the mounting holes as shown in the installation diagram. This allows you to secure the hitch without pushing the carriage bolts back up into the frame rails.
Torque all 7/16" carriage bolt fasteners to 70 lb-ft. Torque all M8 fasteners to 26 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening.
Raise the exhaust back into position and secure it to the vehicle hangers. Note that for enclosed mufflers, the passenger side exhaust bracket has been replaced with a hanger that is now integral to the hitch, so no separate bracket is needed in that location.
The plastic diffuser must be trimmed to create a cutout centered on the hitch. The trim diagram shows a 3.00 inch vertical dimension and 4.50 inch horizontal dimension for the cutout. Center the cutout carefully, then clip and secure the piece back in place using aviation shears.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance is important for safe operation.

Open the rear hatch and remove the two Phillips screws securing the rear scuff panel. Lift up the rear portion of the felt floor covering, then pull out the bottom of the scuff panel and lift it up to remove it. This provides access to the taillight housing. Remove the two 10mm hex bolts securing the taillight housing and remove it from the vehicle. Carefully separate the taillight connectors, taking care not to damage the locking tabs.
Route the T-Connector end with the yellow wire through the hole in the chassis on the driver's side. Cut a slit in the rubber grommet and route the T-Connector end through it. Insert the yellow-wire end between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. On the passenger side, repeat this process using the T-Connector end with the green wire. Use the provided cable ties to secure wires to existing wiring harnesses.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle behind the felt liner of the trunk. Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the vehicle using the double-sided tape provided. The converter box should be positioned near a suitable grounding point.
Drilling is required only if a suitable grounding point does not already exist near the converter box. If an existing screw with nut is not available in the vehicle's frame, you must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the eyelet of the white ground wire. The manual warns to verify miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
