Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Hyundai Kona (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. Exhaust lowering is required for N-Line, all-wheel drive Limited, SE, and SEL models. For all-wheel drive models, remove the two rearmost exhaust hanger rods on both sides from the rubber isolators. For N Line and Kona N models, remove the three rearmost exhaust hanger rods on both sides. Use a stand to support the exhaust and prevent damage. Front-wheel drive Limited, SE, and SEL models and Kona EV models do not require exhaust lowering.
Yes. For Kona EV models, you must trim the fascia panel and the plastic cover support tab. Mark and trim the fascia panel approximately 6" wide by 3" tall at the center of the vehicle on the panel. Trim the plastic clip from the middle plastic cover support tab approximately 2" as shown in the trim diagram on page 3.
The hitch includes 6 carriage bolts (7/16"-14 x 1-1/4"), 6 serrated-flange nuts (7/16"-14), 6 square-hole spacers (1.75" x 0.875" x 0.25"), and 6 qty of 7/16" fishwire tools.
Torque all 7/16" hardware (carriage bolts and serrated-flange nuts) to 59 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness and prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
The fishwire technique guides the carriage bolts and square-hole spacers through the frame rail mounting holes without losing them inside the frame. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole in the vehicle frame rail and out the access hole, pass it through the spacer, and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. This prevents hardware from being pushed into the frame during installation.
Yes. In Step 6, remove the electrical harness from the frame rail and move it from under the bumper beam to above the bumper beam, if applicable. This ensures the harness does not interfere with the hitch installation.
Yes. In Step 7, remove one rubber plug from the bottom of the frame rail on both sides, if applicable. Set the rubber plugs aside for reinstallation in Step 11 after the hitch is mounted and torqued.

In Step 9, raise the hitch into position, feed the fishwires through the hitch holes, and pull the bolts through. Loosely secure the bolts with serrated-flange nuts. Only in Step 10, after the hitch is fully positioned, torque all 7/16" hardware to 59 lb-ft.
Only if your vehicle has an underbody panel on the passenger side frame rail. In Step 4, if present, remove it by removing two plastic clips and one nut. This step applies only to Limited, SE, and SEL models (not N Line). Set the panel aside for reinstallation in Step 11.
Use a 5/8" open end wrench and a pry bar. Slide the wrench up to the rubber isolator, cradling the hanger rod. Place the flat edge of the pry bar between the wrench and the hanger stop or hanger rod, then rotate the pry bar toward the wrench to remove the rubber isolator. Using a lubricant or soapy water on the hanger rod and rubber isolator helps removal.
Wear safety glasses at all times during installation. When lowering the exhaust, use a stand to support it and prevent damage. Be careful not to push hardware into the frame when removing the fishwire. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity when using the hitch.
Perform a periodic inspection of the trailer hitch to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. Verify that all 7/16" bolts and nuts are torqued to 59 lb-ft and that all removed components (exhaust, rubber plugs, plastic covers, underbody panels) have been properly reinstalled.
