However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Mini Cooper (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Jeep Cherokee (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. Wheel removal is optional. The manual states 'If needed you may remove rear wheels to access fasteners' when removing mudflap fasteners in step 2. This is not a required step but may make access easier.
Yes, heat shield modification is required. The manual lists this as a required installation note. Step 10 indicates the heat shield may need to be formed around the hitch during installation.
Trimming may be required. If your vehicle is equipped with a hard foam energy absorber, it must be removed and trimmed to allow proper fit. Some models have soft foam and do not require trimming. The manual provides approximate trim dimensions of 1.25 in (typical) and 0.69 in (typical), but you must confirm fit prior to trimming.
Possibly. Step 10 notes that the spare tire may need to be loosened and the plastic tire cradle adjusted to accommodate the tow loops. This is not required for all vehicles but should be checked during installation.

Installation sequence is: (1) remove bumper cover and its 11 fasteners, mudflap fasteners and clips, wheel well fasteners, fender flare fasteners, and fasteners under bumper and at rear hatch; (2) disconnect wiring harness and remove rear light if equipped; (3) remove wiring harness from bumper beam; (4) remove 8 M8 bolts and lower bumper beam; (5) remove and trim foam energy absorber if present; (6) insert trimmed foam into bumper beam and raise hitch into position, aligning holes with weldnuts; (7) secure hitch with 8 M8 bolts and washers, torque to 23 ft-lbs; (8) reconnect wiring harness; (9) reassemble bumper cover and all fasteners.
Yes, you must reuse the 8 existing M8 bolts that are removed from the bumper beam in step 8. These bolts are used to secure the hitch in step 11 along with the included 3/8" conical toothed washers.
Yes, if your vehicle is equipped with a rear light or rear sensors, you must disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the bumper cover before removal. The wiring harness must also be removed from the bumper beam or divider panel in step 7 and reconnected in step 12, keeping it clear of the exhaust, heat shield, and hitch receiver.
If present, remove the divider panel from the bumper beam and return it to the owner. It is not part of the hitch installation.
All non-trailer loads applied to the hitch must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.

Mount the converter box using the provided double-sided tape on a flat, clean surface that is out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road. Failure to mount the box in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating and potential fire.
Route the black 12-gauge power wire from the vehicle battery to the converter, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
You may use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame as a grounding point, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw if no suitable existing point is available. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The CURT 56406 uses the following wire colors: Yellow for left turn signal, Green for right turn signal, Red for brake, and Brown for taillight. The white wire is the ground wire. The black wire connects to the positive battery terminal.
Locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Then reinstall the taillight.
Secure the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle in a convenient, out-of-the-way location or to the rear hitch. Use the provided cable ties to secure any loose wires. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the product will function properly.
