When we came to the limits of towing capacity, we wanted to know what else was out there. What could we discover off the beaten path? So, we kept going. CURT class 5 Xtra Duty hitches begin a class of their own, beyond class 4 and beyond anything the standards dictate. They are designed for the hard road where only full-size pickup trucks, vans and SUVs dare to tread. They are capable of pulling almost any heavy-duty trailer, including toy haulers, dump trailers, logging trailers, small yacht trailers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). This particular Xtra Duty class 5 trailer hitch offers a gross trailer weight capacity of 15,000 lbs. and an extra-high tongue weight capacity of 1,500 lbs. It features a 2" x 2" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount or hitch-mounted accessory, such as a cargo carrier or winch mount. It is designed to be a custom-fit trailer hitch for certain years of the Ram 1500 and Dodge Ram 1500 (to verify compatibility with your vehicle, see application info). For a little extra towing power and stability, this class 5 hitch can also be used in combination with a weight distributing hitch. It is rated for 16,000 lbs. WD and 1,600 lbs. WDTW. In our drive to create a more powerful hitch, CURT has not neglected the finer details. Our class 5 trailer hitches are welded with precision and go through multiple stages of cleaning to create a smooth surface that is ready to accept our co-cured finish. To protect them from corrosion, chipping and UV damage, these hitches are immersed in a liquid A-coat and then finished in a high-quality black carbide powder coat. They come with grade-8 mounting hardware for solid installation.

The kit includes: two 0.250 x 1.50 x 3.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP4), two 0.188 x 1.00 x 3.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP40), four 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 serrated flange nuts, four 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 carriage bolts (1-1/2" long), and two 1/2" x 30" fishwires. The existing M14 bolts that connect the bumper beam to the frame rail are reused.

Yes. The first installation step is to lower the spare tire for ease of installation. After the hitch is installed and secured, you will raise the spare tire back into position in the final step.
The fishwire technique is used to route carriage bolts through the vehicle frame without drilling. In Step 3, you reverse fishwire 1/2-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP40 spacers through large round holes on the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. In Step 4, you fishwire 1/2-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP4 spacers through the ends of the bumper beam and out the slot in front of the bumper beam. The manual includes a diagram showing the fishwire technique.
The reverse pull fishwire technique is used in Step 3 to route carriage bolts through the large round holes on the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. The manual references this technique but does not provide detailed written instructions; refer to the REVERSE PULL FISHWIRE TECHNIQUE diagram included in the manual.
No. You do not need to remove the bumper. You only need to remove the existing M14 bolts that connect the bumper beam to the frame rail on the driver and passenger side. These bolts are saved and reinstalled in Step 6 after the hitch is positioned.
Torque the 1/2" carriage bolts and hex flange nuts to 110 lb-ft.
Torque the M14 bolts (the existing bumper beam bolts) to 126 lb-ft.
No. In Step 5, you loosely install the 1/2-13 hex flange nuts onto the 1/2" carriage bolts. Do not fully tighten them until Step 7, after the hitch is raised into position and the existing M14 bolts are reinstalled. This allows the hitch to be positioned correctly before final tightening.
After installation, verify that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual recommends periodically checking the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners remain tight and that all structural components are sound during the life of the product.
