This fits: 2009-2010 Smart Fortwo Passion Cabrio
However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Smart Fortwo (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles (bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically)
Includes installation hardware

The Curt 11020 is a receiver hitch designed for the Smart ForTwo (excluding Brabus models). It is designed for use with ball mount #D-222. The hitch is a weight-carrying hitch with a gross load capacity and tongue weight capacity (specific values should be confirmed on your product documentation). Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
No. The Curt 11020 is designed for Smart ForTwo models excluding Brabus models. It is not compatible with Brabus variants.
The Curt 11020 is designed for use with ball mount #D-222.
You will need: a 1/2" drill bit, a drill, 14mm 12-point socket, 11/16" socket, 10" extension, ratchet, carbide bit, rotary tool, and torque wrench. You will also need jack stands to safely support the vehicle during installation.
The kit includes: 2 spacer plates (11020-SP), 4 bolts 7/16"-14 UNC 1-3/4" grade 8 (10-10314), 2 pieces of 7/16" fishwire, 4 serrated flange nuts 7/16"-14 UNC grade 8 (20-00103), 4 square hole spacers 0.250 x 1.00 x 2.50" (CM-SP11), 2 round hole spacers 0.188 x 1.25 x 1.50" (CM-SP8), and 1 flat washer 7/16" (30-00166).
Yes. You must remove the serpentine belt cover before beginning installation. You will also need to remove two existing 12mm bolts at the rear of the frame (use a 14mm 12-point socket to remove them). These bolts will be reused to secure the hitch.
Yes. You will need to raise the vehicle to access the frame rails. Always place jack stands under the suspension when jacking the vehicle up. Do not rely on a jack alone.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 1/2" hole in the passenger side frame rail at a marked location. You will also need to enlarge the middle holes in both frame rails using a rotary tool with a carbide bit to 0.500" diameter to allow insertion of the 7/16" carriage bolts and spacers. The serpentine belt cover hole must also be modified to fit the 7/16" flat washer.
You must drill a 1/2" hole in the passenger side frame rail at the location marked using the hitch as a template.
The middle holes in the frame rails should be enlarged to 0.500" diameter using a rotary tool with a carbide bit. This allows insertion of the 7/16" carriage bolt and CM-SP11 spacer.
Fishwire is used to insert 7/16" carriage bolts and CM-SP11 spacers into the forward and middle holes of the frame rails from behind, where direct access is limited. The kit includes 7/16" fishwire for this purpose. Two different fishwire techniques are used: standard fishwire for the forward holes and reverse pull fishwire for the middle modified holes.
1. First, secure the hitch using the two existing 12mm bolts removed from the rear of the frame. 2. Then fishwire 7/16" carriage bolts and CM-SP11 spacers into the forward holes. 3. Then reverse pull fishwire 7/16" carriage bolts and CM-SP11 spacers into the middle modified holes. 4. Finally, raise the hitch over the 7/16" bolts and secure with the 12mm bolts, leaving approximately 1/2" gap between the hitch mounting plate and frame rail. 5. Insert CM-SP11 spacers in this gap and tighten slowly to keep spacers in place.
You should tighten the 12mm bolts until there is approximately 1/2" between the hitch mounting plate and the frame rail. Then slide a CM-SP11 spacer between them on each side and tighten the bolts slowly, ensuring the spacers stay in place. When installed, the spacer should be flush with the frame rail and hitch.
Position a CM-SP8 spacer between the hitch mounting plate and frame rail, aligning the hole in the spacer with the slot in the hitch mount plate. Secure it with a 7/16" hex nut.
Modify the rear hole in the serpentine belt cover so that the smaller 7/16" flat washer fits inside the hole. Use the large diameter 7/16" flat washer to retain the cover and secure it with a hex flange nut.
All 7/16" fasteners must be torqued to 70 ft-lbs.
All 12mm fasteners must be torqued to 86 lb-ft.
The Curt 11020 has a gross load capacity and tongue weight capacity as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Consult your vehicle's documentation for the maximum towing weight your Smart ForTwo can safely handle.
Non-trailer loads can be applied to this hitch, but they must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
After installation, ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Verify that all 7/16" fasteners are torqued to 70 ft-lbs and all 12mm fasteners are torqued to 86 lb-ft. Check that spacers are flush with the frame rail and hitch.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Regular inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the hitch.
