The Pro Series Pilot trailer brake controller is a great option for those who tow light loads at all hours of the day and night, in all types of weather. Its dark, smokey lens makes it ideal for direct light applications, creating optimum visibility to read the large, two-digit display. The Pilot brake controller kit is a time-based controller that works by electronically connecting your vehicle and your trailer. When you hit the brakes in your tow vehicle, it generates an output signal that ramps up, or increases over a period of time, applying braking power to your trailer at a fixed rate. Its large, easy-to-read dual digit display shows power output and the aggressiveness with which the controller applies the brakes. The Pilot also has manual override to help you brake safely when an unexpected stop pops up. It features advanced internal circuit protection, real time diagnostics, short circuit protection, and loss of ground. Because the Pilot is time-based, it can be mounted in any direction. Plus, the Plug & Play feature allows for quick and easy connection with your vehicle’s wiring. The Pilot trailer brake controller works with 1-3 axle trailers, comes with all the mounting hardware needed for installation, and is backed by a limited 1-year warranty.

Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 22290-037 is a wiring adapter that connects an electric trailer brake controller to your vehicle's electrical system. It interfaces between the vehicle's brake system and the brake controller unit, allowing you to control trailer brakes from your vehicle. The adapter contains male terminals and connects via grey housings to either the factory brake controller (if equipped) or the vehicle's electrical system.
Yes. On vehicles equipped with a factory brake controller, the adapter connects to the large grey housing on the back of the brake controller unit. You will need to locate this housing and plug in the mating grey housing from the brake control adapter. Note that disconnecting the factory brake control will display a fault code on your vehicle's message center display.

You will need a trim panel puller to remove the center dash access panel on the passenger side. A flashlight is also recommended to help locate the routing path for the adapter to exit the bottom of the dash.
Make sure the vehicle is off with the keys removed from the ignition. Wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Read and follow all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before beginning.
Locate the access panel in the center of the dash on the passenger side. Using a trim panel puller, locate the notch in the panel and carefully pry it out and away from the dash, being careful not to damage the trim or panel. Unplug the housings attaching the panel, being careful not to damage the locking tabs, and set the panel aside.
Carefully pull the grey housing towards the access panel and plug in the mating grey housing from the brake control adapter. The specific housing location depends on your vehicle: on vehicles with a factory brake controller, it is on the back of the controller unit; on vehicles without one, it is on the back of the trim panel directly left of the access panel.
Locate a routing path for the adapter to exit the bottom of the dash. Use a flashlight to shine light up through the bottom of the dash to locate a hole to exit the dash. This will help you determine the best path for running the adapter wiring.
Complete the installation per the electric brake control manufacturer's instructions and mount the unit as directed. Perform test procedures as instructed by the brake controller manufacturer. After the brake controller is installed, plug in all connectors that were not used back into the original housings and snap the access panel back into place.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum 3 axles with 6 brakes (18 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and the brake controller instruction sheet for additional information.
