Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The Prodigy P2 is an electronic brake control for trailers with 2, 4, 6, or 8 electric brakes. It uses an inertial sensor to detect deceleration and automatically applies proportional voltage to the trailer brakes based on how hard the tow vehicle is braking. This allows the trailer brakes to work in proportion with the tow vehicle's brakes for safer, more controlled stopping.
Proportional braking means the Prodigy P2 senses the tow vehicle's deceleration and automatically generates a brake output proportional to that deceleration. The harder you brake, the more voltage is sent to the trailer brakes. This is different from simple on/off braking and provides smoother, more coordinated stopping between the tow vehicle and trailer.
Yes. The Prodigy P2 supports most customer-supplied electric over hydraulic braking systems. You can switch the control between Electric (E) mode and Electric over Hydraulic (E/H) mode using the programming function. The customer determines which electric over hydraulic system is suitable for their application.
Yes. The Prodigy P2 will brake proportionally in reverse. It applies the appropriate brake voltage based on deceleration. When backing a trailer, you can cancel the Boost and Hold features for up to three minutes by pressing the Boost button continuously for five seconds with the brake pedal depressed. After three minutes, the Boost and Hold features automatically return to their previous settings.
Two mounting options are provided: (1) Traditional Bracket Mount using a mounting bracket and two #8 × 3/8" machine screws with internal tooth washers, or (2) Under Dash Pocket Mount using a pocket mount and two #6 × 1/2" self-tapping screws. The control can be mounted from 0° to 360° vertically in the direction of travel.
The front of the Prodigy P2 must be horizontal (±20°). The control must be parallel to the direction of travel (±20°). The control can be mounted from 0° to 360° vertically in the direction of travel. Failure to install within these constraints may cause impaired performance.
No. The Prodigy P2 will automatically acquire the proper level setting. It will also automatically adjust as you travel up or down hills.
For the Traditional Bracket Mount: two #8 × 3/8" machine screws with internal tooth washers. For the Under Dash Pocket Mount: two #6 × 1/2" self-tapping screws. A pigtail wiring harness is also included.
Two options are provided: (1) Use the included pigtail wiring harness, which can be installed by following the Generic Wiring Guide, or (2) Purchase a Tekonsha OEM vehicle-specific wiring harness with the Prodigy P2 connector on one end and your vehicle's connector on the other. Vehicle-specific harnesses are available for Ford, Dodge, and GM vehicles with factory tow packages that include a 7-way connector.
After successful wiring, the two-digit display should show: power to the Prodigy P2 without trailer connected; power with trailer connected; manual knob activated without trailer; manual knob activated with trailer (displaying a voltage value such as 5.4, which indicates the power output in volts, ranging from 0.0 to 13 volts); or a blank display if in power-saving mode (no motion or activity for at least 15 minutes).
1. Connect the trailer to the tow vehicle. 2. With the engine running, hold the manual knob fully left and set the power knob to approximately 6.0. 3. Drive on a dry, level paved surface at 25 mph and fully apply the manual knob. 4. If brakes lock up, turn power down; if braking is insufficient, turn power up. 5. Repeat until power is set just below wheel lockup or at sufficient force for maximum braking. 6. Use the brake pedal to make a few low-speed stops to verify the setting. Trailer braking is initiated and terminated via the stoplight switch.
Yes. Always warm the trailer brakes before setting the power. Warm trailer brakes tend to be more responsive than cold brakes. To warm the brakes, drive a short distance (1/4 mile) at 45 mph with the manual lever engaged enough to cause trailer braking at a low level.
The Prodigy P2 outputs voltage in the range of 0.0 to 13 volts to the trailer brakes. The power knob is used to set the desired output voltage.
For Traditional Bracket Mount: #8 × 3/8" machine screws with internal tooth washers (two required). For Under Dash Pocket Mount: #6 × 1/2" self-tapping screws (two required). Do not use longer screws, as drilling or use of longer screws may damage the unit.
The Prodigy P2 will 'HOLD' your trailer with 25% of the power setting while you are at a standstill with the brake pedal applied for longer than 5 seconds. This helps keep the trailer stationary when stopped. The Hold feature can be cancelled for up to three minutes when backing by pressing the Boost button continuously for five seconds with the brake pedal depressed.
Setting power high enough to cause trailer brake lockup is dangerous. Skidding trailer wheels can cause loss of directional stability of both the trailer and the tow vehicle, creating a hazardous driving condition. Power should be set just below the point of wheel lockup.
The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) must never exceed the weight recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Exceeding the GCWR can compromise vehicle safety and performance.
Do not mount or activate RF-generating items (cell phones, two-way radios) within 12 inches of the brake control. These devices can interfere with the control's operation.
Trailer brakes should be adjusted after the first 200 miles of operation when the brake shoes and drums have 'seated,' and at 3,000-mile intervals, or as use and performance requires. Adjustment procedures are provided in Appendix A of the manual.
1. Jack up the trailer and secure on adequate capacity jack stands, following the trailer manufacturer's recommendations. Ensure wheels and drums rotate freely. 2. Remove the adjusting hole cover from the adjusting slot on the bottom of the brake backing plate. 3. Using a screwdriver or standard adjusting tool, rotate the starwheel to expand the brake shoes until the wheel is very difficult to turn. (Note: With drop spindle axles, use a modified tool with approximately 80° angle.) 4. Rotate the starwheel in the opposite direction until the wheel turns freely with slight lining drag. 5. Replace the adjusting hole cover and lower the wheel. 6. Repeat on all brakes. Never crawl under the trailer unless it is resting on properly placed jack stands.
This indicates the trailer is connected and the Prodigy P2 has lost connection to the battery ground. Check the ground connection to the battery and ensure it is clean and secure.
This indicates the Prodigy P2 'sees' an overload condition during operation. Check the brake wiring and connections for shorts or damage, and verify that the trailer brake system is functioning properly.
This indicates one of the following: (1) Trailer is not connected to the tow vehicle, (2) Trailer is connected with an open circuit on the brake line, (3) Trailer connector is disconnected or corroded, or (4) Loss of trailer brake magnet ground. Check all connections and ensure the trailer is properly connected with no open circuits.
This indicates either loss of power to the Prodigy P2 or loss of ground to the Prodigy P2. Check that the control is receiving power from the vehicle's electrical system and that the ground connection is clean and secure.
The Prodigy P2 is in power-saving mode due to no motion or activity for at least 15 minutes. The display will activate when you move the vehicle or activate the manual knob or brake pedal.
Check that the power control is not set to 0. If the power knob is at 0, the control will not send voltage to the trailer brakes. Adjust the power knob to the appropriate setting and test the brakes again.
The Error display indicates the brake control is inoperative. Call Tekonsha technical service at 1-888-785-5832 for return and repair.
The Prodigy P2 is designed for trailers with 2, 4, 6, or 8 electric brakes. It supports most electric and electric over hydraulic brake systems. Verify your trailer's brake configuration before purchasing.
The control includes a pigtail wiring harness and mounting hardware: either #8 × 3/8" machine screws with washers (bracket mount) or #6 × 1/2" self-tapping screws (pocket mount). No additional tools are required for installation.
No drilling is required. The control mounts using either a bracket with pre-drilled holes or a pocket mount. Do not drill additional holes, as this may damage the unit.
Mount the control so the front is horizontal (±20°) and parallel to the direction of travel (±20°). The control can be rotated 0° to 360° vertically in the direction of travel. Improper orientation may impair performance.
Start with the power knob set to approximately 6.0 volts. Then test on a dry, level surface at 25 mph and adjust up or down until braking is sufficient without causing wheel lockup.
The maximum voltage output is 13 volts. The power knob allows adjustment from 0.0 to 13 volts.
No. The boost feature is not designed to replace trailer brake adjustment or repair. If trailer brakes are worn or degraded, they must be inspected and adjusted or repaired by a qualified technician.
Cause: The Prodigy P2 has lost connection to the battery ground. Fix: Check the ground connection to the battery. Ensure the ground wire is clean, free of corrosion, and securely fastened to a solid ground point on the vehicle.
Cause: The Prodigy P2 detects an overload condition during operation. Fix: Check the brake wiring for shorts or damage. Verify that the trailer brake system is functioning properly and not drawing excessive current. Inspect all connections for corrosion or loose terminals.
Cause: Some test lights or non-Tekonsha testers can cause this display. Fix: Discontinue use of non-Tekonsha test equipment. Use only Tekonsha-approved diagnostic tools to test the brake control.
Possible causes: (1) Trailer is not connected to the tow vehicle—connect the trailer. (2) Trailer is connected with an open circuit on the brake line—check the brake wiring for breaks or loose connections. (3) Trailer connector is disconnected or corroded—inspect and clean the connector, or reconnect if loose. (4) Loss of trailer brake magnet ground—check the ground connection from the trailer brake magnets to ensure it is clean and secure.
Possible causes: (1) Loss of power to the Prodigy P2—check that the control is receiving power from the vehicle's electrical system and verify the power connection is secure. (2) Loss of ground to the Prodigy P2—check that the ground connection is clean, free of corrosion, and securely fastened.
First, verify the power control is not set to 0. If power is set above 0 and brakes still do not respond, check: (1) Trailer is properly connected with no open circuits on the brake line, (2) Trailer connector is clean and not corroded, (3) Trailer brake magnet ground is secure, (4) Trailer brakes are functioning and not worn out. If brakes are worn, they must be adjusted or repaired per Appendix A or by a qualified technician.
Reduce the power setting using the power knob. Continue testing and adjusting until the power is set just below the point of wheel lockup. Locked wheels can cause loss of directional stability. If brakes continue to lock at low power settings, the trailer brakes may be worn and require adjustment or repair per Appendix A.
1. Increase the power setting using the power knob and test again. 2. Ensure the trailer brakes are warm before testing (drive 1/4 mile at 45 mph with manual lever engaged at low level). 3. If power is already at a high level and braking is still insufficient, the trailer brakes may be worn and require adjustment or repair per Appendix A or by a qualified technician. 4. Verify the trailer is not overloaded beyond the GCWR.
The Error display indicates the brake control is inoperative and cannot be repaired in the field. Contact Tekonsha technical service at 1-888-785-5832 or visit www.tekonsha.com to arrange for return and repair of the unit.
