Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Jeep Cherokee KL (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 lbs. GTW and 750 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 6,000 lbs. WD and 750 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles (bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically)

Yes, the Curt 13172 is designed for Jeep Cherokee models from 2014-Present. The installation process is the same for all years in this range, though Trailhawk models have a slightly different procedure involving M14 bolts that must be removed and reused during installation.
When used as a weight-carrying hitch, the Curt 13172 supports a maximum trailer weight of 5000 lbs. and tongue weight of 750 lbs. When used as a weight distribution hitch, it supports 6000 lbs. trailer weight and 750 lbs. tongue weight. The hitch itself weighs 50 lbs. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
You will need: a ratchet, torque wrench, sockets in 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 21mm, and 3/4" sizes, a 9" socket extension, a cut-off wheel, and a tape measure. Safety glasses should be worn at all times during installation.
No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses existing frame access holes. You will need to remove a square rubber plug from each side of the frame to expose the access holes, then use fishwire to route the hardware through.
Yes, fascia trimming is required. You must trim the center of the fascia approximately 3 1/2" by 4 3/4" using a cut-off wheel. The fascia does not need to be removed to perform this trimming. Additional trimming of the exhaust bezel may also be required on some models, and seam foam may need to be trimmed for proper fitment.
Yes, you must lower the exhaust as the first step. Remove the 2 bolts connecting the exhaust hanger bracket from the frame on both sides using a 13mm socket. Support the exhaust from underneath during the installation. After the hitch is installed, raise the exhaust back to its original position and secure the bracket bolts.
Yes. You must temporarily remove the fascia support by removing 4 screws using an 8mm socket and pressing down on the tabs that hold it in place. This support is reinstalled after the hitch is secured. On Trailhawk models only, you must also remove the rear vertical and horizontal M14 existing bolts from the frame using a 21mm socket and save them for reassembly. If a wire is present on the passenger side frame rail, unfasten it by pulling the retainer out of the frame and let it hang below the frame rail.
Torque the 1/2" hardware to 110 lb-ft. If your vehicle is a Trailhawk model with M14 bolts, torque those to 139 lb-ft. All fasteners must be torqued after the hitch is raised into position and loosely secured.
The kit includes 6 bolts (part 10-10287, 1/2-13 UNC, 1-1/2", Grade 8, yellow zinc), 6 nuts (part 20-00062, 1/2-13 UNC, Grade 8, yellow zinc), 6 pieces of 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE), and 6 square spacers (part CM-SP6, 0.250 x 1.00 x 3.00"). On Trailhawk models, the existing M14 bolts removed from the frame are reused.
After removing the square rubber plug from each side of the frame to expose the access hole, use fishwire to route the rear and side hardware through the access hole in the frame. Then reverse the fishwire to pull the hardware into the access hole from the other side. On Trailhawk models, only the reverse fishwire hardware and the M14 bolts removed in Step 4 are used.
No. When you raise the hitch into position in Step 7, loosely secure it with the hardware. Be careful not to push the hardware inside the vehicle frame. Only fully torque the bolts in Step 8 after the hitch is positioned and you have checked the fitment around the hitch.
After installation, verify that the fascia support has been reinstalled, the exhaust has been raised back to its original position and the bracket bolts are secured, and any wire on the passenger side frame rail (if present) has been reattached to its original position. Check the trim fitment around the hitch and verify that all fasteners are tight.
You should periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify an exact interval, but regular inspection before towing is recommended.
You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, even though the Curt 13172 hitch itself is rated for 5000 lbs. trailer weight (weight-carrying) or 6000 lbs. (weight distribution). Your Jeep Cherokee's factory towing limit may be lower, and you must follow that limit.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual indicates the installation difficulty level is moderate.
Professional installation time is approximately 100 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation time is approximately 150 minutes. Actual time may vary depending on your experience level and vehicle condition.
