A CURT trailer hitch is the key to pursuing your passions, whether you're taking the family boat out for an afternoon on the water or packing up the mountain bikes for a day on the trails. This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Subaru Outback (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. This class 2 hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin and mounting hardware for a complete installation.

Yes. The first installation step requires lowering the exhaust by removing the 3 rearmost rubber exhaust isolators from the frame-mounted hangers. You must support the exhaust during installation to prevent damage. The exhaust is then reinstalled in the final step.
Yes, drilling is required. You must enlarge the forward hole on each frame rail using a 17/32" drill bit to allow the carriage bolt and spacer to be inserted. Additionally, you must drill the forwardmost holes in the frame rail using the hitch as a template. These modifications are permanent.
Yes. You must remove the muffler heat shield and trim it to clear the hitch mounting plate. According to the Heat Shield Trim Diagram, trim along the bend line, removing 1.125 inches and 0.250 inches as indicated. This modification is permanent.
The forward hole on each frame rail must be enlarged to 1.125 inches. The existing hole is 0.300 inches. This enlargement allows the carriage bolt and spacer to be inserted into the frame rail.
Two people may be required to ease installation. While one person may be able to complete the installation, having a second person can help with positioning the hitch and supporting components during the process.
All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This includes the carriage bolts and hex flange nuts that secure the hitch to the frame rails.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to the hitch must be supported by Curt 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. Curt recommends the use of 18050 stabilizing straps for all non-trailer loads.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the installation.
Fishwire is used to guide carriage bolts and spacers into the frame rail holes. In step 4, you fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer into the rearmost hole in each frame rail. In step 7, after drilling the forward holes, you fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer into each newly drilled hole. The fishwire is then removed before securing with hex flange nuts.
The installation sequence is: (1) lower the exhaust by removing 3 rubber isolators; (2) remove and trim the muffler heat shield; (3) remove 2 rubber plugs from each frame rail and enlarge the forward hole; (4) fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer into the rearmost hole in each frame rail; (5) raise the hitch into position and center it, then loosely secure with hex flange nuts; (6) mark and drill the forward holes in the frame rail using the hitch as a template; (7) fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer into each drilled hole and secure with hex flange nuts; (8) torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs; (9) reinstall the heat shield, raise the exhaust, and reinstall the rubber isolators.
Yes. In step 5, after raising the hitch into position, you must center the hitch on the vehicle before loosely securing it with hex flange nuts. This ensures proper alignment before the forward holes are drilled and final fasteners are installed.
Fasteners are initially loosely secured in step 5 to allow for hitch centering and template drilling. They are fully tightened only in step 8, after all holes have been drilled and all carriage bolts and spacers are in place. All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs at this final step.
