Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Subaru Outback (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 4,000 lbs. GTW and 600 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

Yes. Step 1 requires lowering the exhaust by removing the three rearmost rubber exhaust isolators from the frame-mounted hangers. You must support the exhaust during installation to prevent damage.
Use a 5/8" open-end wrench: slide it up to the rubber isolator, cradling the hanger rod. Place the flat edge of a pry bar between the wrench and the hanger stop or hanger rod, then rotate the pry bar toward the wrench to remove the isolator. Using lubricant or soapy water on the hanger rod and isolator helps removal.
Yes, drilling is required. The installation requires drilling the forwardmost holes in each frame rail (Step 6) and enlarging the existing forwardmost hole on each frame rail to 1.125" to accommodate the 1/2" carriage bolt and square-hole spacer (Step 3). A 7/16" drill bit is provided.
Yes. Step 2 requires removing the muffler heat shield and trimming it to clear the mounting plate along the bend line shown in the diagram.
The forwardmost hole on each frame rail must be enlarged to 1.125" to allow the 1/2" carriage bolt and square-hole spacer to be inserted into the frame rail. See the Hole Enlargement Diagram on page 3.
The fishwire technique is used to guide the carriage bolt and square-hole spacer through the frame rail without losing them inside the frame. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole in the vehicle frame rail and out the access hole. Pass the coiled end through the spacer and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. The fishwire also guides the hitch during mounting.
Installation proceeds in this order: (1) Lower the exhaust by removing three rearmost rubber isolators; (2) Remove and trim the muffler heat shield; (3) Remove rubber plugs and enlarge the forwardmost hole on each frame rail to 1.125"; (4) Fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer into the rearmost hole in each frame rail, leaving fishwire attached; (5) Raise the hitch into position, center it, remove fishwire, and loosely secure with serrated-flange nuts; (6) Mark and drill the forwardmost holes using the hitch as a guide, then fishwire bolts and spacers into each drilled hole and secure with serrated-flange nuts; (7) Torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs, reinstall the heat shield, raise the exhaust, and reinstall the rubber isolators.
Yes. In Step 5, after raising the hitch into position, you must center the hitch on the vehicle before loosely securing it with the serrated-flange nuts.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and serrated-flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This torque is applied in Step 7 after the hitch is positioned and all bolts are installed.
