Typically used on full-size cars, crossovers, compact SUVs, minivans or even compact pickup trucks, a CURT class 2 trailer hitch complements the design of smaller vehicles. This particular class 2 hitch is made to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Ford Edge (to verify vehicle compatibility, see application info). It offers a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. Class 2 trailer hitches can typically be used to tow a variety of lightweight trailers, such as a small utility trailer, small fishing boat trailer or popup camper (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). They are also perfect for adding cargo space to your vehicle with a bike rack or cargo carrier. This class 2 hitch features a 1-1/4" receiver tube to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch-mounted accessory. For safety, it is tested in accordance with SAE J684. A custom trailer hitch design requires extra care, and as such, CURT class 2 hitches are engineered using real vehicles and hands-on research. We use high-strength steel, robotic welding and rigorous testing to produce hitches that are built to fit your lifestyle. To ensure that each hitch will be a reliable extension of your vehicle, we also finish our hitches in a co-curing of liquid A-coat and black powder coat, giving them long-lasting rust and wear resistance.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Ford Edge (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). Professional installation takes approximately 60 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation takes approximately 90 minutes.

Yes. You must support and lower the exhaust by removing 2 rubber isolators mounted to the muffler. After hitch installation, you raise the exhaust back into position and reinstall the rubber isolators. If you have a Sport model, you must also remove the exhaust bezels using a 5.5mm socket and T20 Torx bit, then reinstall them after the hitch is mounted.
Underbody panels are protective covers located behind the rear wheels. You must remove 2 panels by removing 2 hex nuts with a 10mm socket and 2 screws with a 7/32" socket. After trimming them as shown in the diagram, you reinstall them using the hardware removed in step 1.
Fishwiring is a technique using 1/2" wire to thread spacers and carriage bolts into the frame mounting holes before the hitch is raised into position. This allows you to align the hitch with the mounting holes without having to hold the hardware in place manually. The fishwires are removed once the hitch is positioned and the hex flange nuts are installed.
The hitch side plates must be located between the center underbody panel tabs and the frame rails. After trimming the underbody panels and lowering the exhaust, you raise the hitch over the exhaust, thread the fishwires into the mounting holes, raise the hitch into mounting position, remove the fishwires, and install the 4 hex flange nuts.
Trim 3/8" off the center underbody panel outer tabs. The trim diagram on page 3 shows the specific areas to trim on both the center panel and the side panels to allow easier mounting and reinstallation.

The washer/nut may require trimming for reinstallation. Check the fit of the trimmed panels before final tightening. Refer to the trim diagram on page 3 to ensure you have trimmed the correct dimensions (3/8" off the center panel outer tabs, with the side panels trimmed as shown).
The Curt 56272 fits Ford Edge models, excluding Titanium and Sport variants. It is designed for SUVs, Mini and Full-sized Vans. Check your vehicle's trim level against the exclusions. If you are unsure of your trim, consult your vehicle's documentation or contact the vehicle manufacturer.
The Curt 56272 has a maximum amperage rating of 3.0 amps per side for signal circuits and 6.0 amps total for tail and running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or your tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.

Yes. The first step of installation is to locate the vehicle battery on the driver side under the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. The battery must remain disconnected until Step 17, when you reconnect it after all other installation steps are complete.
Install the driver side first (Steps 2–13): disconnect battery, remove trunk coverings, remove scuff panel and rear tire panels, route wires through floor pan grommet, remove and modify taillight assembly, connect the yellow wire harness end to the driver side taillight, ground the white wire, and adhere the converter box. Then install the passenger side (Step 14) by routing the green wire harness end to the passenger side and repeating Steps 6–10. Finally, route the black power wire from the battery (Step 15), secure the 4-flat connector, reinstall all removed items, and reconnect the battery (Step 17).
Drilling may be required for the grounding point. In Step 12, you must locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no existing screw is available, you must drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the white ground wire with the ring terminal and provided screw.
Yes. In Step 11, you must take the grommet removed from the vehicle floor pan and make a small slit in the grommet from the center out to allow the custom wiring harness wires to pass through. After seating the grommet with the wires passing through, use sealant (not included) to seal the grommet where the wires pass through and where the grommet was cut.
In Step 5, starting in the trunk on the driver side, pull back on the side trim panel to locate the grommet in the floor pan. Remove the grommet and route all wiring harness wires, except the 4-flat and white ground wire, through the exposed hole. The grommet is then modified in Step 11 by making a small slit from the center out, and the wires are passed through before sealing with sealant.
In Step 7, locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors behind the taillight. In Step 10, remove the white push fastener from the taillight connector and place it onto the wiring harness housing. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. Make sure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Reinstall the connector with the white push fastener back into place (Step 10, part L).
In Step 13, locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter box should be mounted on the driver side after the taillight connection is complete.
In Step 16, when the 4-flat is in use, route it to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion (Step 17).
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. This is especially important when drilling the 3/32" pilot hole for the grounding screw in Step 12. Ensure the area is free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the ground wire.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness will function properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. This confirms that all connections are secure and the harness is functioning as intended.
The Curt 56272 includes the custom wiring harness with yellow and green wire ends, a white ground wire, a 4-flat connector, a black converter box, a white push fastener, a ring terminal, a provided screw for grounding, double-sided tape for the converter box, cable ties for wire management, and a 4-flat dust cover.
