The 18289-037 is a wiring adapter that connects your vehicle's factory electric brake control harness to an electronic trailer brake controller. It features a 6-pin connector that mates with the vehicle's brake control harness connector located under the dash, left of the steering column. The adapter houses male terminals on the wire side and includes connections for fused battery feed, stop lamp switch input, and trailer brake controller output.
Yes, the adapter can be used with vehicles not equipped with an OEM trailer tow package. However, these vehicles may require additional fuses and relays to complete the output and battery feed circuits. These fuses and relays are sold separately. You must consult your vehicle's owner's manual for the locations where these components should be installed.
Only a trim panel remover is required. This tool is needed to carefully remove the vehicle trim panel underneath the dash without damaging the courtesy lamp wires attached to it.
The vehicle's electric brake control harness connector is located underneath the dash and to the left of the steering column. It is taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. The connector is a 6-pin connector that mates with the 6-pin connector on the adapter.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Carefully remove the vehicle trim panel underneath the dash, being careful not to pull on courtesy lamp wires. (2) Locate the vehicle's electric brake control harness connector under the dash, left of the steering column, taped near the emergency brake pedal. (3) Plug the brake control adapter into the vehicle electric controller connector. (4) Complete installation per the electric brake control manufacturer's instructions, mount the unit as directed, and perform test procedures as instructed.
Yes. The brake control adapter must be plugged into the mating receptacle on the backside of the brake control before attaching the adapter to the vehicle connector. This is a required caution step that must be completed first.
The maximum capacity is 4 axles with 8 brakes, rated at 24 amps. Do not exceed this rating. Additionally, do not exceed the lower of either the towing manufacturer's rating or this 24-amp limit. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and the brake controller instruction sheet for additional information.
Wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before beginning. When removing the trim panel, be careful not to pull on courtesy lamp wires attached to it. Do not overload the circuit—do not exceed the maximum of 4 axles, 8 brakes (24 amps), as overloading can cause fires.
Yes, but vehicles without OEM trailer tow package may require additional fuses and relays (sold separately) to complete output and battery feed circuits. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for locations.
Only a trim panel remover is required.
Yes. Plug the brake control adapter into the mating receptacle on the backside of the brake control before attaching to the vehicle connector.
