When you hit the brakes in your tow vehicle, it generates an output signal that ramps up, or increases over a period of time, applying braking power to your trailer at a fixed rate. The Brakeman IV has up-front buttons so you can easily adjust power output, the sync ? or aggressiveness with which the controller applies the brakes, and engage manual override to help you brake safely when an unexpected stop pops up. It also works with electric or electric over hydraulic braking systems, and features advanced internal circuit protection, real time comprehensive diagnostics, and short circuit protection. Because the Brakeman IV is a time-based controller, there?s no requirement that it be positioned in the direction of travel; it can be installed anywhere you like as long as it is within reach of the driver. Plus, the Plug & Play feature allows for quick and easy connection with your vehicle?s wiring. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the brake control unit itself, as the adapter must be installed per the brake control manufacturer's specific instructions.
The vehicle's electric brake control harness is located underneath the dash. To access it, pull back the carpet behind the brake pedal to expose the 4-pin connector that mates with the adapter.
First, plug the brake control adapter into the mating receptacle on the backside of the brake control unit itself. Then, plug the adapter into the vehicle's 4-pin electric brake control harness connector located under the dash behind the brake pedal. This two-step connection prevents incorrect mating.
The adapter provides four connections: Trailer Brake Controller Output, Fused Trailer Brake Controller Battery Feed, Ground, and Vehicle Stop Lamp Switch to Brake Controller Input. The adapter housing contains female terminals on the wire side to accept the corresponding connections.
The adapter is rated for a maximum of 6 brakes (16 amps) on up to 3 axles. Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating (including the rating in your vehicle owner's manual) or this 16-amp specification. Overloading the circuit can cause fires.
Route the wires and mount the brake controller carefully to avoid airbag deployment locations and any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Locate a routing path for the adapter to exit the bottom of the dash. Complete all routing and mounting per the brake control manufacturer's specific installation instructions.
After installation, perform all test procedures as instructed by the brake control manufacturer. The manual requires that you complete the installation per the electric brake control manufacturer's instructions and mount the unit as directed, then perform the test procedures they specify.
