A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.

The PRODIGY iD is an electronic brake control system for trailers with 2, 4, 6, or 8 brakes (1–4 axles). It uses an internal inertial sensor to detect vehicle deceleration and proportionally apply brake voltage to the trailer's brakes. The system includes a Dash Module (mounted in the vehicle dashboard), a Power Module (mounted under the hood or in the vehicle), and a Manual Override knob that lets you apply trailer brakes independently at any time. Hand-tighten the screws clockwise to clamp the Mounting Collar to the panel. Ensure both Clamp Wings are hand tight. 1. Align the Knob Base with the Indicator Arrow pointing up in the 12 o'clock position. 2. Press straight inward until all three snap fits engage. Yes. If your vehicle comes equipped with a factory tow package, brake control function wires with a connector may exist under the vehicle dash. A vehicle-specific Plug & Play harness may be purchased separately. To install, simply plug the vehicle-specific connector into the factory tow package harness and plug the other end directly into the Plug & Play Harness on the brake control. Consult your vehicle manual or call Tekonsha for the location of the factory harness.
Route all wires as far from the radio antenna as possible to reduce AM interference. Additionally, do not mount or activate RF generating items (such as two-way radios) near (less than 12in to) the Dash Module or Power Module.
The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum combined weight of the tow vehicle and trailer as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. The GCWR must never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Exceeding the GCWR can result in accidents and unsafe towing conditions.
Proportional braking is the default operating mode of the PRODIGY iD. It uses an internal inertial sensor to detect the deceleration rate of the tow vehicle and trailer, then generates a brake output voltage proportional to that deceleration. This means the trailer brakes are applied in proportion to how hard the tow vehicle is braking, providing smooth and coordinated braking. The PRODIGY iD will also brake proportionally in reverse, applying appropriate brake voltage based on deceleration.
The Manual Override is the rotary control knob on the Dash Module. It allows you to apply the trailer brakes to the maximum power set by the Power Output setting, independent of vehicle braking. When you rotate the Manual Override clockwise, the Brake Output Voltage will increase from zero and go to the maximum value as set by the Power Control setting. This lets you apply trailer brakes at any time, such as when descending a long hill or during parking.
The Boost feature allows more aggressive braking by increasing the sensitivity of the PRODIGY iD's inertial sensor, enhancing trailer brake participation during a braking event. Boost has four levels: OFF, Level-1, Level-2, and Level-3. Select your Boost setting based on your towing situation, driving preference, and condition of your trailer brakes. Do not use Boost during icy road conditions. Boost is disabled in Timer mode. Never use Boost to compensate for a potential problem with your trailer brakes; have your trailer brakes adjusted or repaired immediately.
Reverse Mode allows you to temporarily cancel the effects of Boost, which can be useful during parking, especially when backing up the trailer. Reverse Mode lasts for 3 minutes or until you select the Reverse Clear option from the menu. You are notified that Reverse Mode is in effect by the display showing a specific indicator. Access Reverse Mode through the Programming Menu or the EDGE™ App.
Always warm your trailer brakes before setting the Power Output. To warm the brakes, drive a short distance of ¼ mile (0.4 km) at about 45 mph (70 kph), applying the Manual Override at a low setting to allow the trailer brakes to engage at a low level. Warm trailer brakes tend to be more responsive than cold brakes. After warming, set the Power Output on a dry, level paved surface at 25 mph (40 kph) by fully applying the Manual Override and adjusting until the brakes are just below wheel lock-up or at a force sufficient for maximum braking power.
If the Power Output is set too high, the trailer brakes will lock up, causing the trailer wheels to skid. Skidding trailer wheels can cause loss of directional stability of both the trailer and tow vehicle, which is dangerous. The power should never be set high enough to cause trailer brakes to lock up. If trailer brakes lock up during testing, decrease the Power Output.
The PRODIGY iD will HOLD your trailer with 25% of the power setting while you are at a standstill with the brake pedal applied for longer than 5–7 seconds. This feature helps prevent trailer creep on hills or in traffic.
After installation, rotate the Manual Override to verify that the Dash Module and Display are illuminated. The display will flash a specific indicator if the trailer is not connected, or a different indicator when the trailer is connected. Once the PRODIGY iD Dash Module and Display Assembly have been installed correctly and power is applied, the display will indicate connectivity. If the display shows a flashing trailer disconnected indicator for 15 seconds then changes to a dot, check all connections to the trailer.
If the display is blank, the PRODIGY iD may be in Power Saving Mode (which occurs after 15 minutes of no motion or braking activity), or there may be a loss of connection or power. Try depressing the brake pedal or Manual Override to wake the unit. If the display remains blank, verify the connection from the Power Module to the Dash Module, verify the connection to the Power Module and vehicle, verify battery voltage on the black wire (should be 12–14 volts), and verify ground on the white wire. If vehicle battery input exceeds 17.0V, this can also cause a blank display.
Trailer brakes must be adjusted after the first 200 miles (320 km) of operation, and then at 3,000 mile (4,800 km) intervals, or as use and performance requires. Proper brake adjustment ensures optimal braking performance and safety.
1. Jack up the trailer and secure it on adequate capacity jack stands, following the trailer manufacturer's recommendations. Never lift or support the trailer on any part of the axle or suspension system. 2. Check that the wheel and drum rotate freely. 3. Remove the adjusting hole cover from the adjusting slot on the bottom of the brake backing plate. 4. With a screwdriver or standard adjusting tool, rotate the star wheel of the adjuster assembly to expand the brake shoes until the wheel is very difficult to turn. 5. Rotate the star wheel in the opposite direction until the wheel turns freely with a slight lining drag. 6. Replace the adjusting hole cover and lower the wheel to the ground. 7. Repeat on all brakes. For drop spindle axles, use a modified adjusting tool with about an 80 degree angle.
This indicates the trailer is disconnected from the tow vehicle, or there is a problem with the trailer connector or wiring. Check and clean the trailer and tow vehicle connectors; they may be dirty, corroded, or have bent/misaligned terminals. Verify that the trailer or tow vehicle connector is wired correctly. Check for an open on the electric brake wire (broken or disconnected wire) or loss of ground to the brake magnets (broken or disconnected wire). Repair or replace wiring as needed.
An open ground indicator (flashing 2 times per second) means the Power Module has lost connection to the vehicle battery ground while the trailer is connected. Check the connection to ground on the white wire of the Power Module. Verify that the white wire is securely connected to a suitable ground location, such as the negative terminal of the battery.
An electrical overload indicator (flashing 2 times per second) can indicate a defective brake magnet, an intermittent short on the electric brake wire or bare wire, or that the total brake current exceeds the 4-axle load capacity. It can also indicate thermal overload, which reduces braking power. A short circuit indicator (flashing 2 times per second) means the Power Module detects a brake wire short to ground. This can be caused by use of some test lights or non-Tekonsha testers, a short in the 7-way connector between brake output and other terminals, or an electric brake wire on the tow vehicle or trailer that is shorted out. Use only Tekonsha-approved test lights or testers. Inspect and repair the trailer connector if needed. Inspect and repair or replace the electric brake wire.
A power interruption indicator (flashing for 15 seconds) means the Manual Override or brake pedal was applied while connecting to power, or was activated within 5 seconds of initial power being applied to the Power Module. It can also indicate a poor connection to battery power or reversed red and black wires. Unplug the Power Module from the vehicle, verify that the Manual Override or brake pedal is not applied for 10 seconds after reconnecting to power, verify the connection to battery power, and verify that the red and black wires are connected correctly.
If the display flashes continuously and there is no braking, the Power Control may be set to zero. Increase the Power Setting through the Programming Menu. If braking is still not sufficient, increase the Power Output further. If the problem persists, check all wiring connections and verify that the trailer is properly connected.
A communication error (flashing for 15 seconds) indicates a communication failure between the Power Module and Dash Module. The controller type may have defaulted to Timer mode, and the display may be blank or show partial or complete loss of Manual Override braking. Check the Dash Module harness for connection and/or damage. Verify that the 4-pin Universal Wire Harness is properly connected between the Power Module and Dash Module.
