When we came to the limits of towing capacity, we wanted to know what else was out there. What could we discover off the beaten path? So, we kept going. CURT class 5 Xtra Duty hitches begin a class of their own, beyond class 4 and beyond anything the standards dictate. They are designed for the hard road where only full-size pickup trucks, vans and SUVs dare to tread. They are capable of pulling almost any heavy-duty trailer, including toy haulers, dump trailers, logging trailers, small yacht trailers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). This particular Xtra Duty class 5 trailer hitch offers a gross trailer weight capacity of 15,000 lbs. and an extra-high tongue weight capacity of 1,700 lbs. It features a 2" x 2" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount or hitch-mounted accessory, such as a cargo carrier or winch mount. It is designed to be a custom-fit trailer hitch for certain years of the Ram 1500 (to verify compatibility with your vehicle, see application info). For a little extra towing power and stability, this class 5 hitch can also be used in combination with a weight distributing hitch. It is rated for 17,000 lbs. WD and 1,700 lbs. WDTW. In our drive to create a more powerful hitch, CURT has not neglected the finer details. Our class 5 trailer hitches are welded with precision and go through multiple stages of cleaning to create a smooth surface that is ready to accept our co-cured finish. To protect them from corrosion, chipping and UV damage, these hitches are immersed in a liquid A-coat and then finished in a high-quality black carbide powder coat. They come with grade-8 mounting hardware for solid installation.

Yes. Fishwiring is required. In step 6, you must fishwire the 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers through the end of the frame rail to the three mounting holes on both frame rails.

Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate and remove the spare tire and set it aside for reinstallation later.

Save the factory M14 bolts removed in step 4 (3 from the outside of the driver side frame rail, 1 from the underside, and the same on the passenger side). These are reinstalled in steps 7 and 8. The factory M6 bolts removed from the exhaust heat shield in step 5 should be returned to the customer per the manual.
In step 5, remove the 2 factory M6 bolts from the passenger side and 1 M6 bolt from the driver side from the exhaust heat shield. Using a hammer, flatten the heat shield tabs against the frame. The heat shield tabs will be pinched between the hitch side plates and the frame.
In step 9, secure each bumper bracket to the hitch using 1 x 1/2" hex bolt, 1 x conical tooth washer, and 1 x 1/2" hex flange nut. Repeat on both driver and passenger sides.
In step 10, align the bumper mounting studs with the mounting holes in the bumper brackets. Secure the bumper to the bumper brackets using 4 x M10 hex flange nuts. Then secure the center bumper mounts to the bumper plate on the hitch using 2 x M10 hex bolts, 2 x M10 flat washers, and 2 x M10 hex flange nuts.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
