The CURT 14005 has a gross trailer weight (GTW) capacity of 10,000 lbs. and a tongue weight (TW) capacity of 1,000 lbs. If using weight distribution, the capacity increases to 12,000 lbs. GTW with a weight distribution tongue weight (WDTW) of 1,200 lbs. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
No. The CURT 14005 installation requires no drilling. The hitch uses existing frame rail mounting holes and the fishwire technique to guide bolts through the frame without additional holes.
You will need: a ratchet, a torque wrench, a 13mm socket, a 21mm socket, a 3/4" socket, and a 10" socket extension. Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. For a full tools reference guide, visit curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
Before installation, unhook the spare tire safety strap and lower the spare tire. Remove two bumper bolts from the bottom of each frame rail and the heat shield bolt from the bottom of the passenger-side frame rail. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.
The fishwire is a tool included with the hitch that guides bolts and spacers through the vehicle frame rails without losing them inside the frame. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole and out the access hole. Pass the coiled end through a spacer and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt back through the frame and out the mounting hole.
If the vehicle does not have forward-most bolts, fishwire 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" carriage bolts (#2) and spacers (#7) into the holes using the fishwire technique described in Step 1.
The conical-toothed washers (#6) should be oriented with the conical side facing the hitch side plate, as shown in the Step 2 diagram. These washers are used with the M14 hex bolts when securing the hitch to the frame.
All M14 hardware must be torqued to 126 ft-lbs. All 1/2" hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening and prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing the CURT 14005. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning installation.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. This helps prevent damage and ensures safe towing.
The CURT 14005 includes: 2 straps, 2 carriage bolts 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" (grade 8), 6 carriage bolts 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" (grade 8), 4 hex bolts M14-2 x 45mm (CL 10.9), 8 serrated-flange nuts 1/2"-13, 4 conical-toothed washers 9/16", 4 spacers 1/4" x 1" x 3", and 2 fishwire tools 1/2".
1. Unhook spare tire and lower it; remove bumper and heat shield bolts. 2. Fishwire 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4" carriage bolts and spacers into forward holes. 3. Fishwire 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts and spacers into rearmost holes. 4. Raise hitch into position and secure with M14 hex bolts, conical-toothed washers, and serrated-flange nuts. 5. Attach straps to side plates using 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts and nuts. 6. Torque all hardware. 7. Reinstall spare tire.
The straps (#1) are attached to the side plates using 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts (#3) and 1/2"-13 serrated-flange nuts (#5). The straps are then secured to the inside of the frame rails using the remaining 1/2" flange nuts and hardware that were fishwired in Step 2.
The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years the 14005 fits. Contact CURT product support at 877-287-8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
