Having your truck lifted is perfect for anyone who wants the look, needs to clear serious obstacles, or wants to retain a full suspension extension. Adding air bags can improve ride quality and prevent your vehicle's rear end from squatting or sagging when weighed down. However, installing air bags may limit your suspension extension if your truck is lifted. Adding Air Lift’s universal air spring cradle allows the air spring to cycle safely and have full suspension travel. The cradle keeps the air bag in place but detached from the lower bracket, letting it react as necessary to the road. This way, you can keep your vehicle’s height without sacrificing a smooth ride and towing abilities. The Universal Air Spring Cradle is a support component designed for Air Lift air suspension systems on lifted vehicles. It provides a mounting surface for the air spring opposite the air fitting end, replacing the lower roll plate function. The cradle maintains proper air spring alignment and contact during suspension travel.
The cradle is designed and confirmed to work with all Air Lift air spring kits using 1B6 single and 2B6 double-bellow air springs, including LoadLifter 5000 Series and PROSeries. Although the kit is universal and may work with other air spring brands, it may not work with every manufacturer or application. You must confirm bolt configuration compatibility with your air spring kit manufacturer before installation.
The cradle is compatible with the following Air Lift air spring part numbers: 58439, 58494, 58939, 58994, 58437, 58946, 58937, 58996, 58740, and 58940. These are 1B6 single and 2B6 double-bellow air springs. Each has a specific recommended design height: 5.5" for 58439/58494/58939/58994; 6" for 58437/58946/58937/58996; and 5" for 58740/58940.
Yes. The installation guide assumes air springs have previously been installed on the vehicle. If air springs are not currently installed, you must follow the air spring kit installation guide up to the point of attaching the air spring to the lower bracket before proceeding with cradle installation.
Design height is the distance between the mounting brackets minus the cradle thickness (0.83") and any lift spacer height. This dimension should ideally be close to the air spring's design height +/- 1.0", with the upper portion of the range being ideal. Adequate design height is critical because ride and air spring performance may be affected if insufficient travel is provided for the air spring.
The cradle thickness is 0.83 inches. This measurement is used when calculating the design height of the air spring to ensure proper clearance and suspension travel.
A lift spacer may be needed depending on your application. The cradle can be mounted between air spring kit brackets (without a spacer) or in a lifted application using a lift spacer. You must measure the distance between your brackets and compare it to the required design height for your air spring. If the measurement is not within +/- 1.0" of the design height, you will need to select an appropriate lift spacer height. Refer to http://www.airliftcompany.com/workshop/determine-correct-lift-spacer/ to determine which spacer may be needed for your application.
Brake line bracket modifications may be needed based on the lift kit manufacturer's design. Most modifications to the emergency brake line or electrical wires/cables are addressed in the air spring kit's installation guide, but the lift kit manufacturer may have different modifications that affect this installation. Review your air spring kit's installation guide for specific modification requirements.
The following tools are required: 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, ratchet, torque wrench, 7/32" hex-key wrench, and safety glasses.
The kit includes: 4 × 3/8"-24 thin nylon lock nuts, 8 × flat washers, 2 × air spring cradles, 4 × 3/8"-24 x 1" hex drive flat head screws, 4 × 3/8"-24 x 1" button head hex drive screws, and 4 × 3/8"-24 x 1" hex head cap bolts. Release all air from the air springs before beginning installation.
Measure the distance between your mounting brackets. If using the cradle without a lift spacer (Fig. 2), subtract the cradle thickness (0.83") from this measurement. If using a lift spacer (Fig. 3), subtract both the cradle thickness (0.83") and the lift spacer height. The resulting dimension should be close to your air spring's design height +/- 1.0", with the upper portion of the range being ideal. Refer to Fig. 4 for the design height of your specific air spring part number.
The cradle is only to be used on the air spring side (or end) opposite the air fitting. It must not be installed on the end where the air fitting is located.
Yes, if applicable to your application. The lower roll plate should be discarded because its function is replaced by the air spring cradle.
The air spring and universal air spring cradle should be aligned so that the air spring is contacting the cradle in the center. This ensures proper support and suspension performance.
Torque the air spring cradle hardware to 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm).
Yes. The cradle has been designed to install the hardware either facing up or down. However, the hardware must not extend beyond the spring contact surface.
There must be at least 1/2" (13 mm) of clearance from the inflated air spring and its mounting brackets throughout the full travel of the suspension. With air springs inflated to 40-60 PSI (2.8-4.1 bar), ensure there is at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub against each air spring, including tires, frame, wires, hoses, shock absorbers, brake lines, brackets and cables.
After reattaching the lower bracket to the vehicle, cycle the suspension to make sure the air spring has 1/2" (13 mm) of clearance all the way around. With air springs inflated to 40-60 PSI (2.8-4.1 bar), check the clearance of tires, frame, wires, hoses, shock absorbers, brake lines, brackets and cables to ensure nothing rubs against the air springs.
No. The installation of this kit does not alter the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must check your vehicle's owner's manual and not exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded vehicle, including passengers and cargo. This number, along with other weight limits, tire and rim size, and inflation pressure data, is shown on the vehicle's Safety Compliance Certification Label. You must not exceed your vehicle's GVWR when using the Universal Air Spring Cradle.
Payload is the combined, maximum allowable weight of cargo and passengers that the truck is designed to carry. It is calculated as GVWR minus the base curb weight. The Universal Air Spring Cradle does not change your vehicle's payload, so you must not exceed the maximum payload listed in your vehicle's owner's manual.
Yes. The cradle can be used with Air Lift Company lift spacer kits. When using a lift spacer, you will not need all the hardware provided with the lift spacer kit. The hardware in the Universal Air Spring Cradle kit is to be used between the cradle and the lift spacer.
