You will need: a ratchet, vice grips, a 13mm socket, and a 19mm wrench. You will also need a flat blade screwdriver to remove the louvered plastic covers. An assistant is required to help lift the tire carrier into position during Step 8.
The kit includes: 1 spare tire extension bracket, 4 reinforcement brackets, 8 clip nuts (8mm), 8 hex head cap screws (M8 x 1.25" - 40, CL8.8), 2 hex head cap screws (M8 x 1.25" - 60, CL8.8), 8 flat washers (M8), 8 lock washers (M8), and 3 nylock nuts (1/2" - 20, grade 5). The factory lug nuts are reused to secure the spare tire.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to remove the spare tire from the factory carrier before beginning installation. The tire is reinstalled at the end of the process in Step 13, after the extension bracket and all reinforcement hardware are secured.
Yes. Step 8 requires an assistant to lift the tire carrier back into position over the reinforcement brackets while you install the fasteners. This is necessary because the carrier must be held in alignment while the M8 flat washer, lock washer, and hex bolt are loosely installed on all four brackets.
Yes. Step 1 states that the factory-installed carrier must be removed to add the additional support brackets required for the extension bracket. The carrier is removed by disconnecting the brake light electrical connection, removing the grommet, and unbolting the eight hex bolts securing the carrier to the rear door using a 13mm socket.
The factory weld nuts are fasteners welded to the inside of the rear door panel that originally secured the factory spare tire carrier. Step 5 requires their removal because the new reinforcement brackets must be installed in their place. The weld nuts are removed by threading an M8 x 60mm bolt into each nut, using vice grips to clamp the bolt for leverage, and prying the bolt up and down until the weld nut breaks free.
Each of the four reinforcement brackets has two 8mm clip nuts installed over its ends (Step 7). The bracket is then aligned so the flat side of the clip nuts aligns with the holes inside the door panel. With an assistant holding the tire carrier in position, the M8 flat washer, lock washer, and 40mm hex bolt are loosely installed through the bracket (Step 8). All fasteners are then completely tightened in Step 9.
The spare tire extension bracket is placed over the three factory lugs (the mounting studs on the carrier) and secured with the supplied 1/2" - 20 nylock nuts (Step 12). All hardware must be completely tight before the spare tire is reinstalled. The spare tire is then lifted onto the three mounting lugs and secured with the factory lug nuts (Step 13).
Yes. After the carrier is reinforced and the extension bracket is installed, the brake light wire must be threaded back through the access hole and the grommet reinstalled (Step 10). The brake light quick connect plug is then reconnected in Step 11, and the louvered panel inside the door is replaced.
The factory lug nuts securing the spare tire must be torqued to 60 ft.-lbs. This specification applies whether using factory or aftermarket lug nuts. If using aftermarket rims and/or lug nuts, you must ensure the lug nuts are fully seated against the rim before torquing, as closed-end lug nuts may bottom out on the lugs and prevent proper seating.
M8 bolts must be torqued to 7 ft.-lbs. according to the torque specifications table. This applies to the M8 x 1.25" hex head cap screws (both the 40mm and 60mm versions) and the M8 flat washers and lock washers used to secure the reinforcement brackets.
If using aftermarket rims and/or lug nuts, you must ensure the lug nuts are fully seated against the rim before torquing to 60 ft.-lbs. Closed-end lug nuts may bottom out on the lugs and not reach the rim, allowing the spare tire to move during use. Improper installation could result in damage to the spare tire carrier, rim, and vehicle, and will void all warranties related to the product.
Step 13 requires you to finalize the installation by confirming that all hardware is completely tight and all lug nuts are properly torqued to 60 ft.-lbs. This includes the M8 fasteners securing the reinforcement brackets, the 1/2" - 20 nylock nuts securing the extension bracket, and the factory lug nuts securing the spare tire.
For black finishes, mild soap may be used to clean the product. The manual does not provide additional cleaning or maintenance instructions beyond this.
