It has a maximum trailer weight rating of 20,000 lbs and a maximum trailer tongue weight rating of 5,000 lbs. Do not exceed these ratings or the ratings of your truck or trailer, as doing so may cause damage to towing components or loss of attachment between the trailer and truck.
The Companion 20K Slider Hitch (RVK3370) is designed to fit Ford OEM Puck System trucks. If your truck has the Ford OEM Puck System attachment points, it is compatible. Installation requires: a large torque wrench capable of measuring 110 ft-lbs, a 3/4" socket, a 7/16" socket, a 9/16" socket or wrench, a 7/32" Allen wrench, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and a hammer.
The Base Bolt Bag (RVB3370) includes: 1 Pivot Arm A, 1 Pivot Arm B, 8 x 1/2" Lock Washers, 8 x 1/2" X 2" Cap Screws, 1 Wire Torsion Spring, 1 Mounting Clip, 1 x 1/4" X 1/2" Cap Screw, and 1 x 1/4" Lock Nut. The Coupler Bolt Bag (RVC3006) includes: 2 x 3/8" Button Head Cap Screws and 2 x 3/8" Lock Nuts. The hitch also includes the slider base, coupler, latch pins, saddle lock pins, and safety pins.
Remove all debris and obstructions from the truck bed, including any plastic caps over the attachment points. It may be necessary to remove plastic grommets from around the mounting points to fully seat the base. Verify that all parts and hardware are present using the parts list. Familiarize yourself with all parts and tools before beginning installation.
1. Remove latch pins from each side of the base and rotate the handles out. 2. Position the base over the attachment points and carefully lower it until the latch cams pass through the floor and the base rests flat. 3. Remove cotter pins from the four castle nuts. 4. Turn the latch handles to the latched position to engage the cams with each attachment point. If a handle will not turn easily, loosen the castle nut until the cam turns freely. 5. Replace the latch pins with the base firmly held down and each latch handle closed. The slider handle must be in the locked position during this entire process.
With the handles in the latched position, tighten the castle nut until snug. Rotate the latch handle open and closed. Tighten the castle nut slightly and rotate the handle open and closed again. Repeat until you feel the cam engage the attachment point while closing the handle. The handle is set at proper tension when there is friction between the cam and attachment point but the handle can still be closed by hand without bumping, tapping, or forcing it closed. Do not set tension so high that excessive force is required to close the handles, as this may result in property damage or personal injury.
The slider carriage has six different locations to mount the pivot arms, allowing flexibility in coupler height and distance from the cab. Choose a location so that your trailer will be as level as possible and have adequate turning clearance while in the towing position (with the slider in the forward position). The six positions range from highest (19"), middle (18"), to lowest (17") bed floor to top of coupler height, with variations based on king pin position relative to the axle.
Measure from the center of the coupler to the cab of the truck and from the king pin or pivot point of the trailer to the furthest forward corner of the trailer. Compare these measurements to ensure proper clearance when towing. Also inspect the clearance between the bed sides and the underside of the front of the trailer to ensure there is room for the pitch and roll of the trailer while towing. Check that parts of the trailer will not strike the tailgate when sliding the carriage rearward.
1. Inspect the threaded blocks behind each set of arm mounting holes inside the carriage. If blocks shifted during shipping, align them using a screwdriver. The blocks should be positioned with the larger diameter hole openings against the inside face of the carriage and the corner chamfer pointing downward. 2. With the flat side of the pivot arms against the bolt plate in the carriage, install four 1/2" x 2" cap screws and four 1/2" lock washers. 3. Torque each cap screw to 110 ft-lbs.
1. Pass the 1/4" cap screw through the mounting clip and the wire torsion spring. Thread the 1/4" lock nut onto the cap screw and tighten just enough that the spring stays in place but can still rotate around the bolt. 2. Locate the flange on the driver side pivot arm closest to the truck cab. Position the clip so that when the spring's coil is in line with the edge of the arm, there is 1/2" of clearance between the bottom of the polyurethane bushing and the top of the spring. 3. Drive the clip securely onto the flange with a hammer.
1. Pull out the coupler arm and pin it with the safety locking pin near the base of the arm. 2. Using the two 3/8" button head cap screws and two 3/8" flanged lock nuts from the coupler bolt bag, attach the coupler handle to the arm and tighten. 3. Pull out the coupler handle safety pin. Caution: pulling the arm out creates a pinch point; use caution to avoid injury.
1. Lubricate the polyurethane bushings on top of the pivot arms with high grade lithium grease. 2. Place the coupler over the pivot arms with the saddle handles parallel to the slider base in the latched position. 3. Place the saddle lock pins through the saddle, then insert the hairpins through the holes in the end of the saddle lock pins to secure the coupler to the pivot arms.
Adjust the resting angle of the coupler plate by rotating the spring on the driver side pivot arm. Pulling the top of the spring away from the cab will increase the angle of the coupler plate. Set the angle so that the coupler will tilt away from the cab when coupling. Once the spring's orientation is set, tighten the 1/4" nut.
Each of the four 1/2" x 2" cap screws securing the pivot arms to the slider carriage must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
1. Adjust the height of the fifth wheel trailer so that the king pin plate is slightly lower than the top of the coupler. 2. Back the truck toward the trailer, centering the trailer's king pin in the coupler, until the king pin engages the jaws. 3. Close the coupler handle and insert the safety pin through the handle and the coupler. 4. Connect the brake and lighting systems before towing.
Ensure the truck is stationary with the emergency brake engaged and the tailgate down, trailer wheels chocked, and landing gear down supporting the trailer's weight. Confirm no one is between the truck and trailer. Release the emergency brake and engage the trailer brakes. Gently attempt to pull the trailer forward with the truck. When properly connected, the trailer will prevent the truck from moving. If the truck and trailer are not correctly attached, the trailer will separate from the truck.
Never exceed 5 mph (roughly walking speed) when in the maneuvering position. Exceeding this speed may result in property damage, serious injury, or death. The maneuvering position is only intended for parking maneuvers and not for towing.
1. While the trailer is coupled, set the trailer brakes and/or chock the trailer wheels. 2. Pull the slider handle toward the rear of the truck to move it to the unlocked position. 3. Pull the truck forward slowly until the handle falls and is in the locked position. 4. Release the trailer brakes, un-chock the trailer, and maneuver the trailer as needed. Use extreme caution and never exceed 5 mph.
1. Once the trailer is satisfactorily positioned, set the trailer brakes and/or chock the trailer wheels. 2. Pull the slider handle toward the rear of the truck to move it to the unlocked position. 3. Move the truck slowly in reverse until the handle falls and is in the locked position. 4. Release the trailer brakes and un-chock the trailer. The slider handle must be in the locked position before moving the tow vehicle.
Grease the saddle through the grease zerk approximately every six months with multi-purpose grease to allow the coupler to pivot freely. Grease the coupler jaws with multi-purpose automotive type chassis grease. Lubricate the polyurethane bushings on top of pivot arms with high grade lithium grease as needed. Lubricate the top surface of the coupler with multi-purpose automotive type chassis grease or use a nylon lube plate. Perform a visual inspection of the hitch before each tow, checking that all pinned connections are secure and all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification. Check for cracks or damage to the hitch.

Additional caution must be used when towing a wedge car trailer. Towing stability greatly depends on keeping the center of gravity as low as possible. Load heavy cars over the axles. Never tow with a single car on the front of the trailer. When towing a wedge car trailer, never exceed speeds that are reasonable for the roadway conditions (e.g., turns, going around a curve). Failure to account for proper trailer center of gravity and speeds that are reasonable for the roadway conditions may cause damage to the truck, trailer, towing components, and loss of attachment between the truck and trailer.
Approximately 15%-25% of the trailer weight should be on the hitch. The height of the king pin box and pivot arms should be adjusted so that the trailer is approximately level for towing.
No. Do not use the Companion 5th wheel hitch with any device that changes the location of the king pin pivot point. The king pin on your trailer must rotate in the jaws of the Companion coupler. Preventing the king pin from rotating within the jaws with a wedge or any other device such as a Reese Sidewinder or Reese Revolution could result in property damage, serious injury, or death.
To remove the coupler: remove the saddle lock pins, grab the saddle handles, and lift to remove the coupler from the pivot arms. To remove the base: remove the latch pins from each side of the base and turn the handles. Carefully lift and position the base out of the attachment points.
1. Lower the landing gear and chock the trailer wheels. 2. Raise the trailer until the tongue weight is removed from the truck. 3. Unpin the coupler handle and rotate to the open position to unlatch the jaws. If the jaws do not open, readjusting the landing gear may relieve pressure and allow them to open. 4. Use the safety pin to lock the handle in the open position. 5. When you are sure that the landing gear will support the trailer, move the truck forward to release the jaws from the king pin. The jaws will always open when the pressure of the trailer is taken off the coupler as the truck pulls away.

If a latch handle will not turn easily when engaging the cams with the attachment points, loosen the castle nut until the cam will freely turn and engage the attachment point. Then readjust the tension following the proper procedure: tighten the castle nut slightly and rotate the handle open and closed repeatedly until you feel the cam engage the attachment point while closing the handle.
If the jaws do not open when you rotate the coupler handle to the open position, readjusting the landing gear may relieve pressure and allow them to open. Raise the trailer using the landing gear until the tongue weight is removed from the truck, then attempt to open the jaws again.
Ensure you are moving the truck slowly. Pull the slider handle toward the rear of the truck to the unlocked position, then pull the truck forward slowly (for towing position) or in reverse slowly (for maneuvering position) until the handle falls and locks into position. If the handle still does not lock, stop and verify the slider mechanism is functioning properly before proceeding.
