B&W Trailer Hitches is an American manufacturer known for durable, innovative towing products, including gooseneck hitches, fifth-wheel hitches, receiver hitches, and ball mounts. Built in Kansas by employee-owners, B&W products are engineered for dependable performance, easy installation, and long-lasting quality.
B&W Trailer Hitches is an American manufacturer known for building innovative, dependable towing products designed to make hitching easier and towing more comfortable. The company began in 1987 in Humboldt, Kansas, when founders Roger Baker and Joe Works combined their fabrication experience to build custom truck beds and solve common problems faced by truck owners.
B&W changed the gooseneck hitch industry with the introduction of the Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch. Its under-bed mounting system and reversible hitch ball allowed truck owners to quickly store the ball beneath the bed, leaving a clean and unobstructed surface when the hitch was not in use. B&W later applied the same practical approach to the Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch, creating a removable fifth-wheel hitch engineered for a quiet, smooth, and secure towing experience.
Today, B&W manufactures gooseneck hitches, fifth-wheel hitches, receiver hitches, ball mounts, and towing accessories at its nearly 600,000-square-foot facility. The company is owned by approximately 500 employee-owners who remain committed to American manufacturing, trusted materials, skilled craftsmanship, and long-lasting product quality.
Whether you are towing a work trailer, livestock trailer, camper, or fifth wheel, B&W Trailer Hitches offers thoughtfully engineered towing equipment built to perform mile after mile.

Call 888-634-9494The Defender GNC4250 is a gooseneck coupler designed to couple a gooseneck trailer to a 2-5/16" SAE ball mounted on a tow vehicle. It features a locking mechanism for added security and is designed to align with the trailer on trailer sleeves through hole at a 75° angle with the centerline of the trailer.
The coupler requires an SAE 2-5/16" ball with a diameter between 2.283 and 2.313 inches. The ball must be mounted on a tow vehicle and the center of the ball must be within 2" of the center of the 6" diameter base of the coupler when coupling.
The trailer tongue must be equipped with a conventional 4" inside diameter round sleeve. At a minimum, the sleeve must have at least one set bolt with jam nut and a through pin, or two set bolts with jam nuts. It is recommended that a through pin be used to ensure the coupler tube cannot rotate. If the sleeve does not have a through pin hole, you must drill a 7/8" through hole in the coupler sleeve.
Two people are required for installation. One person must hold the coupler in place while the other secures it to the trailer. Failure to support the coupler properly during installation may result in minor injury or damage to the coupler.
No more than 12" of the coupler tube should be exposed past the end of the coupler sleeve. Installing the Defender with more than 12" of the coupler tube exposed could result in serious injury or death.
With the trailer jacks adjusted so the trailer is in its optimum towing position, measure the distance between the bottom of the trailer sleeve and where the bottom of the coupler will be when coupled to the ball. Mark this position on the coupler. This ensures proper alignment and prevents excessive tube exposure. See Figure A3 in the manual for the measurement diagram.
The handle should be positioned toward the driver's side of the truck when the coupler is inserted into the trailer sleeve.
The trailer sleeve set bolts must be torqued to 125 lbs. Failure to torque set bolts could result in serious injury or death.
The safety through pin is a pin with a cotter that secures the coupler tube to the trailer sleeve. After inserting the coupler tube into the trailer sleeve and aligning the trailer sleeve hole with the nearest coupler tube through pin hole, insert the safety through pin and secure it with the cotter. The cotter must be installed to prevent the pin from coming loose. Failure to install the cotter could result in serious injury or death.
To set the coupler to the open position: 1) Pull the handle straight out from the coupler about 1". 2) Rotate the handle clockwise until it stops. 3) Release the handle. The handle should stay in this near vertical position with about 1" between it and the coupler. See Figure B1 in the manual.
To unlock the coupler, insert the key and rotate it 1/4 turn. When disengaged, the lock assembly will pop out so that the face of the lock assembly sticks out from the body of the coupler by about 1/2". See Figure B1 in the manual.
1) Unlock the coupler by inserting the key and rotating 1/4 turn. 2) Set the coupler to the open position by pulling the handle out about 1", rotating clockwise until it stops, then releasing. 3) Position the truck so the 2-5/16" ball is under the coupler, with the center of the ball within 2" of the center of the 6" diameter base. 4) Slowly lower the trailer onto the ball. When fully engaged, the handle will automatically rotate counter clockwise and retract firmly against the coupler housing (closed position). See Figure B2 in the manual.
Yes. With the coupler handle in the closed position, push the lock assembly in until it engages. When locked, the face of the lock assembly will be flush with the body of the coupler. The coupler cannot be uncoupled while the lock is engaged. To unlock, insert the key and rotate 1/4 turn.
1) Unlock the coupler by inserting the key and rotating 1/4 turn. 2) Set the coupler to the open position by pulling the handle out about 1", rotating clockwise until it stops, then releasing. 3) Slowly raise the trailer using the trailer jacks to lift the coupler off the ball. Use caution when jacking—the trailer and truck may shift abruptly when they become disconnected, which may cause physical injury.
B&W recommends two clearance checks: 1) Compare the measurement from the center of the 2-5/16" ball to the cab with the measurement from the center of the coupler to the farthest forward corner point of the trailer to determine cab clearance while towing and turning. 2) Check the clearance between the bed side and the underside of the front of the trailer to allow adequate clearance for the pitch and roll of the trailer while towing. See Figure A3 in the manual.
Before each tow, perform a visual inspection of the coupler: 1) Check that all pinned connections are secure. 2) Verify that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification (125 lbs for set bolts). 3) Check for cracks or damage to the coupler. Do not tow if cracks or damage outside of normal wear are found. Towing with a damaged coupler could result in damage to the tow vehicle, trailer, and loss of attachment.
Before towing, ensure the ball is fully in the coupler cavity and the handle of the coupler is in the closed position. Failure to do so could result in loss of attachment between the truck and trailer, serious injury, or death.
Keep at least 6" around the coupler free from obstructions and loose objects during towing. Failure to do so could result in loss of attachment between the truck and trailer, serious injury, or death.
Yes. Always use safety chains when towing. Failure to use safety chains could result in serious injury or death.
Do not exceed the tow or tongue rating of the coupler, the tow or tongue rating of the hitch, or the tow or weight ratings of the truck or trailer. See vehicle and trailer manufacturer information for specific ratings. Exceeding these ratings may cause damage to towing components or loss of attachment between the trailer and truck.
Keep the coupler clean, store it out of the weather, and avoid corrosive environments to maintain peak performance. The Defender should not require extensive maintenance. If a problem with the coupler persists, contact B&W Trailer Hitches for support.
No. Do not modify this product in any manner. Doing so could alter its integrity and lead to a loss of attachment between the trailer and the tow vehicle.
The GNC4250 fits gooseneck trailers with a conventional 4" inside diameter round sleeve and requires an SAE 2-5/16" ball (diameter 2.283–2.313") on the tow vehicle. The trailer sleeve must have at least one set bolt with jam nut and through pin, or two set bolts with jam nuts.
Only if your trailer sleeve does not already have a through pin hole. If necessary, you must drill a 7/8" through hole in the coupler sleeve.
Torque the trailer sleeve set bolts to 125 lbs. Failure to torque set bolts could result in serious injury or death.
The coupler handle must be in the closed position and the ball must be fully in the coupler cavity before towing. Failure to do so could result in loss of attachment, serious injury, or death.
Perform a visual inspection before each tow: check that all pinned connections are secure, verify all bolted connections are at correct torque (125 lbs), and check for cracks or damage. Do not tow if damage outside normal wear is found.
The lock is likely engaged. Pull on the key to disengage the lock assembly after turning it 1/4 turn. Once disengaged, the handle should retract when the coupler is in the closed position.
The ball is likely forcing the latch against the latch pin. Move the handle to the open position by pulling it out about 1" and rotating clockwise until it stops. If the problem persists, there may be debris trapped in the latch mechanism—clean debris from the coupler cavity.
Check two things: 1) Ensure the handle is in the open position. 2) Verify the ball is the correct size—an SAE 2-5/16" ball with a diameter between 2.283" and 2.313". If the ball is correct size and the handle is open but the coupler still will not accept the ball, debris may be trapped in the latch mechanism. Clean debris from the coupler cavity. If the problem persists, contact B&W Trailer Hitches for support.
Check two things: 1) Ensure the handle is in the open position. 2) Ensure adequate tongue weight—rock the trailer to make sure the ball is not putting pressure on the latch. If the problem persists, debris or corrosion may be preventing the spring from pushing the latch rearward. Contact B&W Trailer Hitches for support.
Debris or corrosion may be preventing the spring from pushing the lock assembly out. Use the key and disengage the lock by rotating it 1/4 turn. If the lock still does not disengage, contact B&W Trailer Hitches for support.
