The BAKFlip Hard Folding G2 16-23 Tacoma 5' w/ Deck Rail System 226426 (Part #BKDA226426) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The box contains: 1 hard fold cover, 1 driver side rail, 1 passenger side rail, 1 adaptor rail driver side, 1 adaptor rail passenger side, 2 cover retainer clamps, 6 clamps, 2 buckle ends, 2 gaskets, 4 screws, 4 nutserts, 6 T-nut kits (each with 5/16" flat washer, 5/16" lock washer, and hex head bolt), 2 bulkhead gaskets, 3 D-shaped cab bumpers, and 2 drain tubes.
Yes, the BAKFlip 318S0074 is designed for 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma trucks.
Required tools: scissors or utility knife, isopropyl alcohol, 1/2" wrench or socket, Phillips screwdriver, 5/8" drill bit and drill, T-30 Torx driver, 3/8" drive short extension, and ratchet.
Yes. All areas where the bed cover mounts must be clean and free of debris prior to installation. This is critical for proper fit and sealing.
A second set of hands is recommended. The manual specifically notes that a second person may help when installing the adaptor rails and side rails, and when tightening clamps to prevent the rails from leaning down.
Remove the factory end cap from the utility rail. Insert three T-nut kits (L) into the end of the accessory rail and put the end cap back in. Repeat on the passenger side.
Install the adaptor rail with the bolt, washer, and lock washer attached to the T-nut kit, pushing the rail all the way toward the cab and bulkhead. Adjust the T-nuts to line up with the holes in the adaptor rail. Do not use the slotted holes. Leave loose initially. Once aligned, tighten the bolts while applying downward pressure to the rail. A second set of hands may help. Repeat on the opposite side.
Install the driver side rail on top of the adaptor rail, pushing it all the way toward the cab and bulkhead. Insert the back part of the clamp through the upper slot in the adaptor rail and the front part onto the side rail, clamping onto the adaptor rail. When tightening each clamp, ensure the side rail sits flush and seals properly. Repeat on the opposite side with the passenger side rail. A second set of hands may help.
Use the Alternate Clamping Locations. Install the clamp back part behind the adaptor rail next to the tab and the front part onto the side rail. For the driver side (rail D), the middle and cab clamps should go to the left of the tabs. For the passenger side (rail E), they should go to the right of the tabs.
1. Remove the factory cab header using a T-30 Torx driver, 3/8" drive short extension, and ratchet to remove five fasteners securing the header rail to the front bulkhead below the cab rear window. 2. Clean both ends of the cab header with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax or grease and allow to dry. 3. Peel backing paper off the foam seal and adhere to header rail end caps. 4. Reposition the factory cab header to the bulkhead. 5. Install and torque all mounting bolts to 7.5 Nm (66.5 lbs-in).
Torque all cab header mounting bolts to 7.5 Nm (66.5 lbs-in).
Tighten all clamps to 10 ft/lbs of torque with a 1/2" wrench or socket. Do NOT overtighten.
Improper clamp engagement or overtightening can cause rails to lean down. To correct this: have one person stand on the outside of the bed and slightly roll the rails upward while another person slowly snugs the clamps up. Do not tighten clamps too quickly or overtighten them. Ensure full engagement of both clamp sections (an audible click will be heard when properly engaged).
Attach the drain tubes to the front of the side rails to divert water out of the truck bed. Drill a 5/8" hole in the top corner of the wheel well (location 1), then run the opposite end of the drain tube through the 5/8" hole. Before drilling, verify the area is free and clear of obstructions below the truck bed and inspect the area below the bed floor to ensure proper clearance.
Yes. A 5/8" hole must be drilled in the top corner of the wheel well for the drain tubes. Before drilling, verify the area below the truck bed is clear of obstructions and inspect for proper clearance.
Before placing the cover onto the vehicle, slide two cover retainer clamps into the track on the underside of the cover near the cab. Confirm the clamps fit properly into the cover rail for optimum fit. Repeat on the opposite side of the cover.
Set the cover in the folded position on the side rails toward the cab. Peel off the adhesive liner of the gasket and adhere the gasket to the underside of each buckle end. Position the buckle ends with the open side facing the bed cover panel. Use a Phillips screwdriver to install the two buckles into the pre-drilled holes on the front header panel with the provided screws and nutserts inserted from the backside. DO NOT use a screw gun; securely tighten by hand only.
With the bed cover in the folded position, clean the area where the three D-shaped cab bumpers will go with soap and water to remove dirt and debris. Then clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax or grease and allow to dry. Install the cab bumpers along the top edge of the cover where it meets the truck cab. Apply pressure to all bumpers to ensure good adhesion.
Unfold the cover toward the tailgate and confirm each panel is centered side to side and front to back on the truck bed. The rear edge of the cover and tailgate seal should rest on top of the tailgate. For proper sealing, the tail panel will overlap by 0.5". If adjustments are needed, loosen the cover retainer clamps and shift the cover until positioned correctly.
Ensure the tailgate functions properly with the cover closed. If needed, adjust the cover toward the truck cab to allow proper tailgate operation.
Release each latch and check if the latches are hitting or not engaging the side rails. If any latches need modifications, refer to the Slam Latch Adjustment section to make adjustments.
Use a screwdriver to partially pry open the tab on the latch housing while sliding the housing away from the latch assembly. (Note: on the passenger side, the tab is located on the opposite side of the housing.) With the latch cover removed, loosen the screws and move the latch bracket to adjust. Retighten the screws and slide the latch housing back on.
To drive with the cover in the folded up position, use the straps and buckles provided with the cover. Attach the buckle at the bulkhead, then pull the strap to take up the slack and secure the cover. Before flipping the cover to the up position, make sure to stow the straps using the clips on the underside of the folded cover.
To drive with the cover closed, unhook the buckles and straps from the bulkhead. Stow the straps using the clips on the underside of the folded cover. Fold all panels toward the tailgate making sure that all latches are engaged.
Lower the tailgate and pull the cable on either side. While pulling on the cable, lift the panel up and toward the cab.
Fold the cover open and lift it until it is vertical or past 90 degrees toward the truck cab. Release the prop rod attached to the rail, fold it over, and position it firmly against the vertical plate on the underside of the cover. Slide the prop rod locks downward and tighten the knobs to lock it into position. Do this on both sides. The cover should be firmly in position with little to no movement once the prop rods are locked.
Retighten the cover retainer clamps once desired fitment is reached. Check that latches are properly engaging the side rails. Confirm the side rails are level with the truck bed cap and not angled up or down.
Clean the truck bed cover with mild automotive soap and water only. Avoid using abrasive cleaners as they may dull the finish. Do not use chemicals and fluids such as insect repellents, oils, solvents, and lubricants, as they could damage the rubber hinges and seals and void the warranty. Always read the ingredients of any cleaning product to ensure it is safe for use with rubber.
Retighten clamps after one week of driving following installation (or re-installation) and periodically thereafter. Periodically check that the cover is securely attached and working as intended. Inspect all hardware such as clamps and cover retainer clamps to ensure they are properly installed. Covers used at high frequency or subject to rough roadways and heavy vibration may require adjustment. Regularly inspect and service each panel latch, clean away excess dirt or grime, and ensure all latches move freely and properly engage the side rail.
Do NOT place objects on or against the cover or framework. Do NOT tie cargo to the truck bed cover or framework. Do NOT operate the vehicle with objects on top of the cover. NEVER allow children or pets to occupy the truck bed with the cover in the fully closed position. The cover is not airtight; special care is required to keep cargo clean and dry. Truck bed covers will not prevent theft of contents inside the truck bed.
Do NOT tow your vehicle from the rear with the cover on your vehicle. If towing from the rear is required, the cover MUST be removed from the vehicle and properly stored.
Improper engagement of the clamps can cause the rails to appear tilted inward. To fix this: loosen the nut on the affected clamp(s). Adjust the clamp(s) until you have full engagement of both sections (1 & 2). When properly engaged, an audible click will be heard. Overtightening the bolt can also contribute to tilted rails, so do NOT over torque the bolt.
Water intrusion can result from several issues: (1) Retaining clamps are not tight or not properly engaged to the side rails. (2) The bulkhead seal is not in place or the cover is not resting on it. (3) Not all latches are engaged to the side rails (adjust if needed). (4) The side rails are not installed flush with the top of the bed rail. Check all these points and correct as needed.
The cable could be pinched in or under the cable guide extrusion. To fix this: loosen the three screws on the center cable cover (bar), located in the middle of the panel. Slightly lift up on the cable guide extrusion. Pull on both sides of the cable to free it.
The seal may be wavy when removed from the box. Allow ample sunlight for the seal to lay flat and relax.
