The kit includes: 1 passenger side rail, 1 driver side rail, 1 hard fold cover, 2 cover retainer clamps, 2 buckle ends, 4 screws, 4 nutserts, 2 gaskets, 2 drain tubes, 3 D-shaped cab bumpers (on select models), and 3 oversized cab bumpers (on select models). Yes. All areas where the bed cover mounts to the truck must be clean and free of debris before installation. Specifically, clean the bulkhead and rail surfaces with soap and water to remove dirt and debris, then clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax or grease, and allow to dry completely.
The side rails must be positioned flush with the top edge of the truck bed rail. The end of the side rail with the drain tube goes towards the cab. Critically, the side rails must be square (90° angle) to the truck bed rails so the rear latch engages properly. Do not tilt the rails. The rails should be level with the truck bed cap, not angled up or down.
Attach 3 or 4 clamps (depending on make/model) to each side rail. Place the front clamp 6–8 inches from the bulkhead. Place the rear clamp as close to the tailgate as possible. Center the middle clamp accordingly. If four clamps are provided, space the center two clamps equidistant between the front and rear clamps. Clamps should be evenly spaced along the full length of the rail.
Loosely tighten the clamps with a 1/2" wrench initially to make sure they engage with the side rail. Do not fully tighten them yet. If the rails are leaning down, have one person stand on the outside of the bed and slightly roll the rails upward while another person slowly snugs the clamps up. Do not tighten too quickly or overtighten, as this will cause the rails to lean down.
All clamps must be tightened to 10 ft/lbs of torque using a 1/2" wrench or socket. Do not over-tighten. Use a calibrated torque wrench to ensure proper fit and safe operation.
Before placing the cover onto the vehicle, slide two cover retainer clamps into the track on the underside of the cover near the cab. Confirm the clamps fit properly into the cover rail for optimum fit. Repeat on the opposite side. When the cover is in position, tighten the retainer clamps by turning them clockwise until the lock washer is secure.
Peel off the adhesive liner of the gasket and adhere the gasket to the underside of each buckle end. Position the buckle ends with the open side facing the bed cover panel. Use a Phillips screwdriver to install the two buckles into the pre-drilled holes on the front header panel with the provided screws and nutserts inserted from the backside. Tighten by hand only; do not use a screw gun.
Set the cover in the folded position on the side rails towards the cab of the truck. Confirm the cover is evenly spaced between the rails. Confirm the retainer clamps are positioned around the side rails correctly.
Unfold the cover towards the tailgate and confirm each panel is centered side to side and front to back on the truck bed. The rear edge of the cover and tailgate seal should rest on top of the tailgate with a 0.5" overlap for proper sealing. If adjustments are needed, loosen the cover retainer clamps and shift the cover until positioned correctly. Re-tighten the cover retainer clamps once the desired fitment is reached.
With the bed cover in the folded position, install the cab bumpers along the top edge of the cover where it meets the truck cab. Clean the area first with soap and water to remove dirt and debris, then clean with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax or grease, and allow to dry. Apply pressure to all bumpers to ensure good adhesion.
Release each latch to check if the latches are hitting or engaging the side rails. If any latches need modifications, refer to the Slam Latch Adjustment section in the manual for adjustment instructions.
To drive with the cover closed, unhook the buckles and straps from the bulkhead and stow the straps using the clips on the underside of the folded cover. Fold all panels towards the tailgate, making sure that all latches are engaged. You are then ready to drive with your cover in the closed position.
To drive with the cover in the folded up position, use the straps and buckles provided with the cover. Attach the buckle at the bulkhead, then pull the strap to take up the slack and secure the cover.
Lower the tailgate and pull the cable on either side. While pulling on the cable, lift the panel up and towards the cab.
Before flipping the cover to the up position, stow the straps using the clips on the underside of the folded cover. Fold the cover open and lift it until it is vertical or past 90 degrees towards the truck cab. Release the prop rod attached to the rail, fold it over, and position it firmly against the vertical plate on the underside of the cover. Slide the prop rod locks downwards and tighten the knobs to lock it into position on both sides. The cover should be firmly in position with little to no movement once the prop rods are locked.
Drilling may be required. The drain tubes can be attached to the front of the side rails to divert water out of the truck bed. The opposite end of the drain tubes can be placed behind a bed liner, through bed plugs, or by drilling a 5/8" hole in the bulkhead. Drilling is only necessary if you choose the bulkhead hole option for drain tube routing.
Critical safety warnings include: (1) Hot surface hazard—surfaces may become hot in high temperatures or extended sun exposure; allow time to cool before contact. (2) Sharp edges—wear protective gloves during installation. (3) Pinch points—keep hands, fingers, and body parts clear of moving parts during operation; operate slowly and with caution. (4) Entrapment—never allow anyone inside the truck bed when the cover is closed; ensure the area is clear before closing. (5) Cargo—do not force the cover over cargo taller than the bed depth. (6) Do not place objects on the cover, tie cargo to it, or operate the vehicle with objects on top. (7) Do not tow from the rear with the cover installed. (8) Do not allow children or pets in the truck bed with the cover fully closed.
All fasteners must be tightened to the specified torque values provided in the installation instructions to ensure proper fit and safe operation. Under- or over-tightening can lead to product failure, potential damage to your vehicle, injury, or safety hazards while driving. Always use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the specifications in the installation instructions.
After installation, check that all clamps and cover retainer clamps are properly installed and working as intended. Verify that the cover is securely attached to the truck bed and operating as intended. Ensure all latches move freely and properly engage the side rails. Check that the bulkhead seal is in place and the cover is resting on it. Verify that the side rails are installed flush with the top of the bed rail.
Clean the cover with mild automotive soap and water only. Avoid abrasive cleaners as they may dull the finish. Do not use chemicals and fluids such as insect repellents, oils, solvents, and lubricants, as they can damage the rubber hinges and seals and void the warranty. Always read the ingredients of any cleaning product to ensure it is safe for use with rubber. Periodically check that the cover is securely attached and working as intended. Inspect all hardware such as clamps and cover retainer clamps to ensure they are properly installed. Regularly inspect and service each panel latch, clean away excess dirt or grime, and ensure all latches move freely and properly engage the side rail.
Check all clamps and retention mechanisms for tightness after one week of driving following installation (or re-installation) of the cover, and periodically thereafter. Covers used at high frequency or subject to rough roadways and/or heavy vibration conditions may require adjustment.
Leaning rails are caused by improper engagement of the clamps. Loosen the nut and adjust the clamp(s) until you have full engagement of both sections of the clamp. When the clamp and rail are properly engaged, an audible click will be heard. Over-tightening the bolt can also contribute to tilted rails. Do not over-torque the bolt. Clamps may need to be installed in the bed flange cutouts to assist with rail installation.
Water intrusion is typically caused by one or more of the following: (1) Retaining clamps are not tight or not properly engaged to the side rails. (2) The bulkhead seal is not in place or the cover is not resting on it. (3) Not all latches are engaged to the side rails. (4) The side rails are not installed flush with the top of the bed rail. Check each of these items and adjust as needed.
A sticking latch is typically caused by the cable being pinched in or under the cable guide extrusion. Loosen the three screws on the center cable cover (bar), located in the middle of the panel. Slightly lift up on the cable guide extrusion and pull on both sides of the cable to free it.
The seal may be wavy when removed from the box. Allow ample sunlight for the seal to lay flat and relax. This is normal and will resolve over time.
The BAKFlip 318S0043 carries a limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. The warranty period depends on the cover type: MX4 and F1 models are covered for five (5) years from the original date of purchase; G2 and FIBERMAX models are covered for three (3) years from the original date of purchase. The warranty is non-transferable and applies only to the original owner. Warranty registration and proof of purchase are required. The warranty is void if the product has been damaged in an accident, due to neglect, unforeseeable use, improper installation, improper servicing, or failure to follow care and use instructions.
