No. CURT rates the brake winch installation as Easy. Installation difficulty levels are based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Required tools are: ratchet, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" socket, and 10mm socket.
You will need three grade 5, 3/8" diameter bolts, three lock washers, six flat washers, and three nuts. This hardware is not included with the winch and must be purchased separately.
A minimum of 50 lbs (22 kg) of load is required when operating the brake winch.
Insert the end of the steel cable through the drum flange hole from inside to outside. Wrap the cable around the drum shaft once, feeding it under itself. Secure the cable by feeding the end through the cable anchor, ensuring at least 1 inch of cable protrudes through the anchor. Torque the cable anchor nylon nuts to 2 ft-lbs.
Torque the cable anchor nylon nuts to 2 ft-lbs.
Prior to operating the winch, secure the handle to the input shaft. The manual does not provide detailed attachment steps beyond this requirement.
Place a lock washer on the bolt, then a flat washer. Insert the bolt through the mounting hole on the winch. Add one more flat washer on the other side and secure with a nut. Use three grade 5, 3/8" diameter bolts with three lock washers, six flat washers total, and three nuts.
To wind cable in, rotate the handle clockwise. To wind cable out, rotate the handle counter-clockwise. The brake winch is designed to hold the load in place when the handle is released.
Wear impact safety glasses and heavy-duty work gloves. Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or long sleeves that can be caught in moving parts. Wear protective hair covering. Keep proper footing and balance. Stand back and stay out of the direct line the cable is pulling to avoid whiplash if the cable slips or breaks. Never use the winch for lifting equipment or humans. Always maintain a firm grip on the handle and release it slowly to ensure the ratchet pawl is properly engaged and supporting the load.
Check the cable before each use for signs of wear. If the cable shows signs of wear, replace it immediately. Verify the cable hook is properly engaged to the load prior to operating the winch. Check for damaged parts and any other conditions that may affect operation. Replace or repair damaged or worn parts immediately.
Failure to leave at least five wraps of cable on the drum may break the cable connection to the drum and could result in serious injury.
No. Do not use any attachments to extend the length of the winch cable. Doing so may break the cable connection to the drum and could result in serious injury.
After moving an object with the winch, secure the object. Do not rely on the winch to hold an object for an extended period of time.
The winch stand must be strong enough to support at least 5 times the rated capacity of the winch. The mounting surface must be equal to or larger than the footprint of the winch frame. The winch base must be properly bolted to a structure or vehicle that can hold both the winch and the winch load. Failure to properly bolt down the winch can result in personal injury and/or property damage.
Check the cable for wear and replace damaged cable immediately. Apply oil to the input shaft, bushings, and drum hub. Grease all gears regularly. Do not grease or oil the friction pad.
No. Do not grease or oil the friction pad. Greasing or oiling the friction pad will impair the winch's braking function.
Verify that the winch is properly secured to the winch mount and that the winch handle is properly secured to the winch input shaft.
Periodic inspection of your product should be performed to ensure all hardware and/or components remain secure.
