A lot depends on your brake controller functioning properly. There are thousands of pounds to be managed and brought to a halt every time you stop your truck and trailer. The CURT trailer brake controller tester box is an advanced safety measure designed specifically for testing the functions of brake control units. A brake controller is a powerful and sophisticated tool, but as with any tool, it is important to inspect it once in a while. The CURT trailer brake controller tester tests the brake activation function of a brake controller by showing the voltage output while braking. It also checks brake light activation, short circuit protection and disconnect notification. The CURT brake controller tester is compatible with time-based and inertia-based trailer brake controllers and is equipped with a quick plug connector to plug into any CURT brake controller. Testing your brake controller unit with the CURT brake controller tester is easy, and does not require the control to be hooked up to your vehicle or trailer. Simply plug the 12V cord into any standard 120V wall socket, hook up your trailer brake controller unit using the quick plug connector, and you are ready to begin. The voltmeter on the brake controller tester box will display the brake control's voltage output to ensure proper braking power for your trailer, and the red brake button on the tester will allow you to check the brake controller's response without actually hooking up your vehicle for towing. The brake controller tester box also features a brake lamp indicator for brake controllers with brake light activation, a short circuit / overload protection button, allowing you to test the brake controller's response to adverse electrical situations, as well as a disconnect test to ensure that your brake controller will properly notify you of a vehicle-trailer disconnect.

The CURT 51521 is a brake control tester designed to test the output voltage, brake pedal activation, short circuit protection, and disconnect notification of brake controls. It connects directly to a brake control unit and displays voltage output on a digital display.
The tester requires a 120-volt AC wall outlet. Plug the power cord into a standard wall outlet before operation.
Place the tester on a level surface and press the red power button. The button will light up when power is on, indicating the tester is ready to use.
Connect the brake control directly to the brake control tester using the appropriate connector. The manual does not specify connector type or detailed connection steps beyond this.
Set the output voltage adjustment of the brake control to half of the displayed bars or 5.0, which is approximately 50% output. This is the baseline setting for initial testing.
The output display should read approximately 6 volts at 50% output and 12 volts at 100% output. Test the brake control at different output levels using the manual control lever to confirm proper function across the range.
Press the red brake button on the brake control tester. The output display will register a voltage corresponding to the brake control's output settings, and the red brake lamp will light if the brake light activation feature is enabled.
Hold the brake control's manual control lever on and activate the amber short button on the tester. The brake control should indicate a short circuit or overload condition as outlined in its own installation and user guide.
Apply the brake control's manual control lever and press the black disconnect button on the tester. The brake control should indicate a disconnect condition as outlined in its installation and user guide.
Check to make sure the black disconnect button on the tester is not activated. If it is, deactivate it. The disconnect notification is a test feature and will appear when the disconnect button is pressed.
Yes, the CURT 51521 can test accelerometer-based brake controls such as CURT's Reflex and TriFlex models. These controls use dual-axis or triple-axis motion sensing, and their output voltage is proportional to the brake control's set limits based on stopping forces sensed by the accelerometer.
Accelerometer-based brake controls like CURT's Reflex and TriFlex sense stopping forces during braking. When the tow vehicle is parked or stopped with the brakes applied, no stopping forces are being sensed, so the brake control output to the trailer brakes will be minimal. This is normal operation.
If the brake control is equipped with a sync/sensitivity adjustment, set it to its maximum setting before testing.
The red brake lamp lights up if the brake control being tested has a brake light activation feature that is enabled. It will illuminate during brake pedal activation tests and when the red brake button on the tester is pressed.
