Towing your vehicle behind your RV is a great way to experience more of the adventure on your cross-country excursions. Whether you're towing a compact car or a full-size truck, CURT has the perfect solution to help you Bring It! CURT towed-vehicle RV harnesses are a vehicle-specific, plug-and-play solution to wiring your vehicle for dinghy towing. They use original-equipment-compatible connectors to plug into your vehicle's wiring system without any cutting, splicing or soldering required. They provide a standard 4-way flat connector to plug into the RV socket and synchronize the vehicle's tail lights, turn signals and brake lights with the RV's. Because each towed-vehicle RV harness has a vehicle-specific design, installation is fast and easy. This particular RV dinghy towing wiring harness is designed for specific years of the Toyota RAV4 (see application info to verify fitment). CURT RV harnesses are also built to provide long-lasting operation. They feature integrated block diodes that protect the vehicle's circuits from the RV signals. They isolate the sensitive vehicle electronics, keeping them from overheating and short circuiting. Every CURT towed-vehicle RV harness comes ready to install with all necessary hardware included. They also come with a 4-way flat extension to provide plenty of length to plug into the RV socket, as well as a connector mounting bracket to mount the connector on the vehicle.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

The CURT 58956 Custom Towed-Vehicle RV Wiring Harness for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Toyota RAV4 (Part #BKDK58956) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, part 58956 is designed for Toyota RAV4 vehicles. The harness is compatible with SUVs, Mini & Full-Sized Vans (S-class). For specific model year compatibility, contact the vehicle manufacturer or Curt Manufacturing directly, as the manual does not list specific years.
The harness is rated for 6.0 amps per side for signal circuits (left and right turn/brake) and 6.0 amps total for tail/running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Required tools include: ratchet, ratchet extension, 1/4" socket, 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/32" drill bit, T-30 Torx bit, Phillips screwdriver, flat blade screwdriver, panel trim removal tool, cutting tool, and fish wire.
Yes. Step 2 requires removal of the spare tire to access the interior of the vehicle where the wiring harness connectors are located.
Yes, drilling is required in two locations. Step 9 requires drilling a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire screw (unless an existing screw with nut is available in the vehicle frame). Step 15 requires drilling two 3/32" holes to mount the 4-flat bracket. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under surfaces to avoid damage and personal injury.
1. Remove the side trim panel to access the taillight wiring harness connectors. 2. Separate the factory connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. 3. Insert the RV harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. 4. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on both sides of the vehicle.
The 4-flat harness uses the following color codes: White = Ground, Green = Right Turn/Brake, Brown = Taillights, Yellow = Left Turn/Brake.
Route the 4-flat harness through the driver-side wall panel grommet (Step 11), then underneath the vehicle toward the driver-side rear tire well, securing it to the factory wire harness with cable ties (Step 12). Use a fish wire to route it over the driver-side rear wheel well toward the front, securing it to brake line brackets (Step 13). Continue routing over the driver-side front wheel well into the engine compartment using a fish wire (Step 14). Avoid areas with moving parts, sharp edges, or heat sources.
Mount the 4-flat bracket in a suitable flat position in the engine compartment. Use the bracket as a template to mark two holes, drill two 3/32" pilot holes, and attach the bracket using the two provided screws. Secure the 4-flat connector in the mounting bracket.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
After routing the 4-flat through the driver-side wall panel grommet and seating it back in place, use the provided sealant on the seated grommet or cap where the RV harness wires pass through the slit.
With the 4-flat extension plugged into the RV harness on one end and the RV on the other, perform a function test. These functions will only work on the brake/taillight combination lamp. Test all functions before reinstalling removed components. If all functions work on the tow vehicle, the installation is complete.
Yes, the harness can remain installed on the vehicle at all times. If you want to tow a trailer while the RV harness is installed, plug in the 4-flat harness (part 58920, sold separately) and you are ready to tow.
The 58920 is a 4-flat harness converter sold separately. It is required if you want to tow a trailer while the 58956 RV harness is left installed on the vehicle. Plug the 58920 into the connection point labeled "FOR TRAILER TOW USE ONLY: CONVERTER #58920 REQUIRED" and you are ready to tow.
Remove the following components to access the wiring: trunk floor coverings, spare tire, side storage tray (two push fasteners), rear scuff panel (multiple fasteners), front storage tray (four fasteners), and side trim panel (three upper fasteners and two cargo tie downs on driver side; repeat on passenger side).
Store the 4-flat extension in the vehicle when not in use. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
