Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The ZCI ModuLite is a trailer lighting control module that converts your vehicle's lighting signals to trailer-compatible outputs. It reads your vehicle's turn, brake, and tail light functions and outputs them through a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The module requires constant 12V power and uses input sensors to detect your vehicle's lighting signals.
The ZCI ModuLite works with four types of vehicle wiring systems: Type A (2-wire system with combined turn/brake on one wire and tail on a separate wire), Type B (3-wire system with separate turn, brake, and tail wires), Type BT (brake/tail multiplexed with separate turn wires), and Type BTT (brake/tail/turn all combined on one wire). However, the module may not work with some BTT wiring systems; if it does not, you may need to route the tail wire to the rear license plate illumination circuit and/or brake to the center high stop light.
The module may not work with some BTT wiring systems. If your vehicle has a BTT system and the module does not function properly, you may need to route the tail wire to the rear license plate illumination circuit and/or the brake wire to the center high stop light. Consult the ZCI reference card or contact technical support at 800-632-3290 for guidance on your specific vehicle.
You will need: Phillips head #2 screwdriver, wire cutters, a tester or volt meter, wire strippers and wire crimpers, a socket and ratchet set, and a drill with a 3/32" drill bit. These tools are required to connect wires, secure the module, and drill a ground hole.
The kit includes: 20 cable ties (8.5"), 1 cable tie (14.5"), 4 pieces of foam tape, 1 15-amp fuse, 1 ring terminal, 1 fuse holder, 2 yellow butt connectors, 1 self-tapping screw, 1 double-sided tape, 1 reference card, and 1 notice label. The power wire, wire kit (118150 or 118151), and additional connectors are sold separately.
The wiring kit is sold separately. You will need to purchase either kit 118150 or 118151 depending on your vehicle's wiring configuration. The power wire and additional connectors are also not included in the base 119250 kit.
Yes. You must disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal before routing the power wire to the battery. After routing the wire and connecting it to the battery with the fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal (but before inserting the 15-amp fuse), you will reconnect the negative battery cable.
The approximate installation time is 60 minutes.
First, determine your vehicle's wiring system type (A, B, BT, or BTT) by checking the vehicle's electrical system. Then, refer to the Vehicle Wiring Code & Description table in the manual. This table shows which input wires (yellow for left turn, green for right turn, brown for tail, red for brake) to connect based on your system type. Use a volt meter to carefully probe one wire at a time to identify each function, and do not probe across two wires or vehicle structure.
1. Apply the required input sensors as determined from the Vehicle Wiring Code table. 2. Ensure the sensor end is oriented correctly—the arrow on the lid should point towards the vehicle's light (except for G-code low-side switched vehicles, where the arrow points away from the light). 3. Lay the wire between the sensor's ferrites and snap the lid closed. 4. Secure all sensor ends with foam tape to prevent movement during operation.
Determine a suitable mounting location for the module and secure it using the double-sided tape provided. The module must be mounted so that the epoxy side points towards the ground to prevent water buildup. Choose a location that allows easy access to the module and keeps wires away from hot surfaces, heat shields, and the fuel tank.
You may need to drill a hole. First, locate a suitable grounding point near the module, such as an existing ground stud. If no existing ground point is available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the ground.
You need a 3/32" drill bit. This is the only drilling required for the installation, and it is only needed if an existing ground stud is not available.
The module uses a 15-amp fuse. The maximum circuit capacity is limited by the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating or: max. stop/turn light 2 per side (4.2 amps) or max. tail lights (7.5 amps). Exceeding these limits can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of these ratings.
Use 12-gauge wire or larger. Connect the module's black wire to a 12-gauge (or larger gauge) wire using a butt connector.
The input sensor wires are: yellow (left turn), green (right turn), brown (tail light), and red (brake). However, not all colors are used in every vehicle wiring system. Refer to the Vehicle Wiring Code & Description table to determine which wires apply to your vehicle's system type (A, B, BT, or BTT).
Route the power wire to the positive side of the vehicle battery. Using the fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal provided, connect the wire to the battery. Do not insert the 15-amp fuse yet. The fuse is inserted only during the Module Learn Mode and Verification step after all other connections are complete. Route the wire carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Do not insert the 15-amp fuse until you are ready to perform the Module Learn Mode and Verification step. Start the vehicle, turn all functions off (tail, brake, and turns), and then insert the 15-amp fuse into the fuse holder to initiate ZCI learn mode. The fuse should only be inserted after all wiring connections are complete and the module is ready to be programmed.
Wrap the notice label around the yellow fuse holder wire, near the ring terminal. This label serves as a warning and should remain visible near the battery connection.
Wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before beginning. When using a volt meter or circuit tester, carefully probe one wire at a time—do not probe across two wires or across vehicle structure. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
The ZCI ModuLite requires constant 12V power. If the power is interrupted, the ZCI may need to be reset. Do not use an alternative power source that is interrupted when the vehicle is off. The module must remain powered at all times to maintain proper operation.
Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum stop/turn light 2 per side (4.2 amps) or maximum tail lights (7.5 amps). Verify your trailer's lighting load before connecting it to the module. Read your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information about circuit capacity.
1. Start the vehicle and turn all functions off: tail lights (headlights), brake, and turns. 2. Insert the 15-amp fuse into the fuse holder to initiate ZCI learn mode. 3. Activate each function separately for approximately 5 seconds in this order: tail, brake, right turn, and left turn. 4. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. 5. Hand the ZCI Reference card to the vehicle owner or place it in the glove box.
After completing the Module Learn Mode and Verification steps, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. Connect a test light to the 4-flat connector and activate each vehicle function (tail, brake, right turn, left turn) to confirm the module outputs the correct signals. If using a trailer, connect it to the 4-flat and verify all lights function correctly.
The manual does not specify routine maintenance requirements. However, ensure that the module remains mounted securely with the epoxy side pointing down, and that all cable ties and connections remain tight. If the module loses power, it may need to be reset by removing the 15-amp fuse and repeating the Module Learn Mode and Verification steps. Consult the ZCI Reference card for additional maintenance guidance.
The ZCI ModuLite works with vehicles that have 2-wire, 3-wire, BT (brake/tail multiplexed), or BTT (brake/tail/turn multiplexed) wiring systems. It may not work with some BTT systems. Determine your vehicle's wiring type and consult the Vehicle Wiring Code table in the manual, or contact technical support at 800-632-3290.
You will need to purchase a wiring kit (118150 or 118151, depending on your vehicle) separately. The kit includes the power wire and additional connectors not included in the base 119250 package.
Drilling may be required. If an existing ground stud is not available near the module, you will need to drill a 3/32" hole for the ground wire. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, and verify what is behind the surface before drilling.
The module uses a 15-amp fuse. Do not exceed the maximum circuit capacity of 2 per side (4.2 amps) for stop/turn lights or 7.5 amps for tail lights, or the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating.
Use 12-gauge wire or larger to connect the module's black wire to the battery positive terminal.
If the ZCI power is interrupted, the module may need to be reset. To reset, remove the 15-amp fuse and repeat the Module Learn Mode and Verification steps.
1. Ensure the 15-amp fuse is fully inserted into the fuse holder and has no breaks. 2. Verify the fuse holder is connected properly to the positive post of the battery. 3. Check the chassis ground—ensure the ring terminal is in full contact with bare metal of the vehicle's chassis. 4. Ensure the input sensors are installed per the Input Sensor Determination findings and are oriented correctly (arrow pointing towards the light, or away for G-code vehicles). 5. Remove the 15-amp fuse and repeat the Module Learn Mode and Verification steps.
