The 05 - 08 Mini Cooper Convertible, excluding 'S' model 1.25in. CURT Trailer Hitch + Ball Mount + Cover + Lock Kit by CURT HWA1961 (Part #HWA1961) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, Curt part number 11126 is designed for Mini Cooper. The hitch is a receiver-style hitch that mounts to the rear of the vehicle using existing weldnuts on both sides of the frame.
The hitch is designed for use with ball mount D-19 / 45519. This ball mount is removable and must be secured with a hitch pin and clip before towing.
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, 12-inch extension, 12mm socket, 8mm socket, offset screwdriver, and flat blade screwdriver. A 10mm socket is also needed for one fastener under the bumper cover. You may need pliers to install the hitch pin and clip.
The hitch includes 8 washers (part number 30-00148, 3/8-inch S-CON, YZ). Installation uses the vehicle's existing M8 bolts (removed during bumper beam removal) and existing weldnuts on both sides of the frame. No additional bolts are supplied; the original fasteners are reused.
Yes, the bumper cover must be completely removed. This involves removing 11 fasteners from various locations: 4 hex head fasteners inside the wheel wells (2 each side), 2 hidden fasteners behind the fender flairs (1 each side), 2 hex head screws from the bottom of the bumper cover (1 each side), 1 fastener under the bumper cover to the right of the exhaust, and 2 fasteners visible when the rear hatch is open. If your vehicle has rear lights or sensors, the wiring harness must be disconnected.
Wheel removal is optional. The manual notes that if needed, you may remove rear wheels to access the 4 hex head fasteners inside the wheel wells (2 each side) during bumper cover removal.
The bumper beam assembly is removed by taking out 8 M8 bolts. The divider panel is secured to the aluminum bumper beam with 2 plastic nuts. During installation, the plastic nuts, divider panel, and hard foam energy absorber are removed and returned to the owner. The hitch is then sandwiched between the bumper beam and the rear of the car, and the original M8 bolts are reused to secure it.
All M8 hardware must be torqued to 23 ft-lbs. Use 3/8-inch conical toothed washers (part number 30-00148) under each bolt.
No drilling is required. The hitch uses existing weldnuts on both sides of the vehicle frame. However, if the receiver tube interferes with the lip in the center of the bumper cover during reassembly, you may need to trim the bumper cover lip back. Be careful not to cut any piece needed to snap the light or center trim piece into position.
Raise the hitch into position by aligning the holes with the existing weldnuts on both sides of the frame. The hitch will fit firmly between the spare tire and the rear panel. It is then sandwiched between the bumper beam and the rear of the car, and secured using the 8 existing M8 bolts.
If your vehicle is equipped with a rear light or rear sensors, you must disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the bumper cover and from the rear light before removing the bumper cover. After the hitch is installed, the wiring harness is reconnected to the bumper beam using push fasteners, and the side markers must be re-attached to the wire harness before securing the bumper cover. Keep the wiring harness clear of the exhaust, heat shield, and hitch receiver.
Before towing, the hitch pin and clip must be in place, securing the ball mount to the receiver. The hitch is not intended for use as a weight-distributing hitch. Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
All non-trailer loads applied to this hitch must be supported by 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
The manual notes that longer safety chains may be required to reach the chains loops. You must verify that your safety chains are long enough to clear the lower valance while turning before towing.
After installation, align the bumper cover with the vehicle and check for interference issues. The receiver tube may interfere with the lip in the center of the bumper cover; if so, trim the bumper cover lip back carefully, being careful not to cut any piece needed to snap the light or center trim piece into position. Ensure all 11 fasteners are reinstalled and fender flairs are snapped back into place.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This is a general maintenance requirement to keep the hitch in safe operating condition.
No. This hitch is not intended for use as a weight-distributing hitch. It is a weight-carrying hitch only.
Yes, this hitch features a removable ball mount. The ball mount (D-19 / 45519) is secured to the receiver with a hitch pin and clip, which must be in place before towing.
The center rear light or trim piece must be removed to access the hitch. This is done by depressing tabs on both sides behind the bumper cover. You may need to use pliers to install the hitch pin and clip.
