The 09 - 10 Mini Cooper Convertible, excluding 'S' model 1.25in. CURT Trailer Hitch + Ball Mount + Cover + Lock Kit by CURT HWA1960 (Part #HWA1960) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The Curt 11160 is designed for 2007-present MINI Cooper Hard Top with single exhaust and 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible with single exhaust. It excludes Clubman, S, and John Cooper editions. Verify your vehicle matches these specifications before purchasing.
The Curt 11160 has a gross load capacity of 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower.
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, 12" extension, 13mm socket, 8mm socket, offset screwdriver, and flat blade screwdriver. A 10mm socket is also needed for step 5. A phillips screwdriver is required for bumper cover removal.
The kit includes 8 washers (part number 30-00148), which are 3/8" conical toothed washers. The 8 M8 bolts that secure the hitch are existing factory fasteners removed from the bumper beam during installation and reused.
Yes, bumper cover removal is required. The manual lists this as a required installation step. The process involves removing 11 fasteners from the bumper cover, mudflap fasteners and clips, wheel well fasteners, fender flare fasteners, and fasteners under the bumper and at the rear hatch.
Wheel removal is optional. The manual states 'If needed you may remove rear wheels to access fasteners' when removing mudflap fasteners in step 2. This is not a required step but may make access easier.
Yes, heat shield modification is required. The manual lists this as a required installation note. Step 10 indicates the heat shield may need to be formed around the hitch during installation.
Trimming may be required. If your vehicle is equipped with a hard foam energy absorber, it must be removed and trimmed to allow proper fit. Some models have soft foam and do not require trimming. The manual provides approximate trim dimensions of 1.25 in (typical) and 0.69 in (typical), but you must confirm fit prior to trimming.
Possibly. Step 10 notes that the spare tire may need to be loosened and the plastic tire cradle adjusted to accommodate the tow loops. This is not required for all vehicles but should be checked during installation.
All M8 hardware securing the hitch must be torqued to 23 ft-lbs. This includes the 8 existing M8 bolts and the 3/8" conical toothed washers.
Installation sequence is: (1) remove bumper cover and its 11 fasteners, mudflap fasteners and clips, wheel well fasteners, fender flare fasteners, and fasteners under bumper and at rear hatch; (2) disconnect wiring harness and remove rear light if equipped; (3) remove wiring harness from bumper beam; (4) remove 8 M8 bolts and lower bumper beam; (5) remove and trim foam energy absorber if present; (6) insert trimmed foam into bumper beam and raise hitch into position, aligning holes with weldnuts; (7) secure hitch with 8 M8 bolts and washers, torque to 23 ft-lbs; (8) reconnect wiring harness; (9) reassemble bumper cover and all fasteners.
Yes, you must reuse the 8 existing M8 bolts that are removed from the bumper beam in step 8. These bolts are used to secure the hitch in step 11 along with the included 3/8" conical toothed washers.
Yes, if your vehicle is equipped with a rear light or rear sensors, you must disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the bumper cover before removal. The wiring harness must also be removed from the bumper beam or divider panel in step 7 and reconnected in step 12, keeping it clear of the exhaust, heat shield, and hitch receiver.
If present, remove the divider panel from the bumper beam and return it to the owner. It is not part of the hitch installation.
All non-trailer loads applied to the hitch must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty.
Longer safety chains may be required to reach the chain loops. You must verify that your safety chains are long enough to clear the lower valance while turning before towing.
Remove the rear light or center trim when the hitch is in use. The manual shows the hitch with safety chains attached in the first photo and with a ballmount in the second photo.
After installation, verify that the bumper cover is properly aligned, side marker bulbs are reattached to fender flairs, rear sensors are reconnected, and all 11 fasteners are reinstalled. Ensure fender flairs snap back into place.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This maintenance is critical to safe operation.
Yes, if it is a 2007-present Hard Top or 2009 Convertible with single exhaust (excludes Clubman, S, and John Cooper editions). Verify your model before purchasing.
