CURT 12036 is a weight-carrying receiver hitch designed for 2007-current Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers. It allows you to tow trailers and carry loads up to 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. The hitch mounts to the vehicle's frame rails and accepts ball mounts for trailer coupling.
CURT 12036 is designed for 2007-current Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers only. Check your vehicle's year, make, and model against the manual cover to confirm compatibility. If you are unsure, contact CURT technical support at 877.287.8634.
CURT 12036 is designed for use with ball mount D-18 / 45518. Euro mount options are available: 45551 (1-7/8" ball) and 45552 (2" ball). Use only compatible mounts; do not use other ball mounts without confirming compatibility with CURT.
When used as a weight-carrying hitch, CURT 12036 has a gross load capacity of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
CURT 12036 includes: 4× 1/2-13 UNC 1-1/2" carriage bolts (part 10-10287), 6× 1/2-13 UNC flange nuts (part 20-00062), 6× 0.250 × 1.25 × 3.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP19), 2× 1/2-13 UNC 1-3/4" carriage bolts (part 10-10272), and 4× 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
The installation is rated as moderate difficulty. Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. CURT technical support is available at 877.287.8634.
Before beginning installation, read all instructions thoroughly. Ensure you have all required tools: ratchet, torque wrench, 6" socket extension, 3/4" socket, 8mm socket, flat head screwdriver, power drill, 17/32" drill bit, tin snips, and wire. Wear safety glasses at all times. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
The first step is to lower the exhaust by removing the three rear exhaust hangers (rubber isolators). Use wire to hold the exhaust up high enough to prevent damage to the exhaust tube.
Remove heat shields from both sides of the vehicle by removing three 6mm bolts and one black plastic plug from each side. The driver side heat shield is also connected to the rear wiring harness by a plastic plug that must be disconnected. Once removed, trim off the tab from both heat shields before reinstalling them without the frame rail screws.
Fishwire is a technique for threading bolts and spacers through the bumper mounts and into the frame rail holes before raising the hitch into position. In step 3, you fishwire 1/2-13 × 1-1/2" carriage bolts with CM-SP19 spacers through the rear of bumper mounts to holes in the frame rails. This allows the hitch to be positioned and secured before drilling the rear holes.
After fishwiring the front bolts and spacers into position, raise the hitch into position and secure it with 1/2" flange nuts. The hitch is then used as a template to mark and drill the rear holes.
A 17/32" drill bit is required. Using the hitch as a template, drill the rear holes through the frame rails on both sides with this bit size.
After drilling the rear holes, fishwire 1/2-13 × 1-3/4" carriage bolts (part 10-10272) with CM-SP19 spacers through the rear of the bumper mounts and attach with 1/2" flange nuts (part 20-00062).
After all bolts and nuts are installed, torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 lb-ft. This is the final step before reinstalling the exhaust.
The final step is to reinstall the exhaust that was removed in step 1. Reattach the three rubber exhaust isolators (hangers) to secure the exhaust back into its original position.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Although CURT 12036 is rated for 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight, your vehicle's manufacturer may specify a lower limit. Always follow the more restrictive limit.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to CURT 12036 must be supported by 18050 stabilizing straps. Do not apply non-trailer loads without this support. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for further information on stabilizing straps.
After installation, verify that the hitch is properly positioned and all fasteners are tight. Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners remain tight and all structural components are sound. Perform these checks regularly during the life of the product.
