The 10 - 10 Ford Mustang Convertible 1.25in. CURT Trailer Hitch + Ball Mount + Cover + Lock Kit by CURT HWA963 (Part #HWA963) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, CURT 11048 is designed for 2010–2011 Ford Mustang Coupes. The installation procedure differs slightly between model years: 2010 models require rear exhaust hanger relocation, while 2011 models do not.
CURT 11048 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 2,000 lbs and tongue weight of 200 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. You must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
The minimum tongue weight is 120 lbs.
The minimum trailer weight is 60 lbs.
Required tools are: pry bar, ratchet, 9/16" and 11/16" sockets (or 13 mm and 15 mm sockets), and a torque wrench. Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation.
No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses fishwire hardware installation through existing access holes in the frame rails.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. Contact CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634 for clarification.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
The installation is rated as challenging. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
On 2010 models, the rear exhaust hangers must be removed and relocated. The exhaust pipes must be lowered by loosening the strap that fastens them together behind the muffler and detaching the pipes from each other. The rear of the muffler is then carefully lowered to hang from the remaining exhaust hanger. The four fasteners removed from the rear hangers should be returned to the vehicle owner. Alternatively, you may remove the forward exhaust hangers and remove the mufflers entirely, or leave the pipes attached and remove both sets of hangers (though this requires a vehicle lift).
On 2011 models, remove the rearmost rubber isolator on both mufflers. Lower the exhaust by loosening the strap that fastens the exhaust pipes together behind the muffler and detaching the pipes from each other. Carefully lower the rear of the muffler and let it hang from the remaining exhaust hanger. Repeat on the other side. Unlike 2010 models, the rear exhaust hangers do not need to be relocated.
Fishwire is a technique used to thread carriage bolts and spacers through access holes in the frame rails before raising the hitch into position. The bolts and spacers are inserted through the access holes and positioned so they are ready to receive the hitch when it is raised. This allows the hardware to be secured without drilling new holes.
The hitch is attached using carriage bolts, square hole spacers, round hole spacers, and serrated flange nuts. Specifically: 7/16 x 1" carriage bolts (part 10-10311, qty 2) with .250 x .88 x 2.25" square hole spacers (CM-SP2, qty 6); 7/16 x 1.5" carriage bolts (part 10-10282, qty 4) with .250 x .88 x 2.25" square hole spacers (CM-SP2); 3/8 x 2" carriage bolts (part 10-10323, qty 2) with .250 x 1.00 x 2.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP18, qty 2) and .500 x 1.25 x 2.50" round hole spacers (CM-SP52, qty 2) on 2010 models only. All bolts are Grade 8, and all nuts are serrated flange nuts.
Carriage bolts are installed using the fishwire technique. The bolts and spacers are threaded through access holes in the frame rails before the hitch is raised into position. Once the hitch is in place, the bolts are secured with flange nuts from the outside of the frame rail.
All 7/16" hardware on CURT 11048 must be torqued to 70 ft/lbs.
All 3/8" hardware on CURT 11048 must be torqued to 45 ft/lbs.
Fasteners are installed loosely during the initial assembly steps (steps 4–6). All fasteners are torqued to their final specifications only in the final step: 3/8" hardware to 45 ft/lbs and 7/16" hardware to 70 ft/lbs.
1. Remove the rearmost rubber isolator on both mufflers (2010 models: also remove and relocate rear exhaust hangers). 2. Lower the exhaust by loosening the strap connecting the exhaust pipes and detaching them. 3. Fishwire the shorter 7/16 x 1" carriage bolts and SP2 spacers through the access holes. 4. Raise the hitch into position and loosely attach with 7/16" flange nuts. 5. Fishwire the 7/16 x 1.5" carriage bolts and SP2 spacers and loosely attach with 7/16" flange nuts. 6. (2010 models only) Fishwire the 3/8 x 2" carriage bolts and SP18 spacers, add SP52 spacers and exhaust hangers, and secure with 3/8" flange nuts. 7. Torque all hardware and reinstall the exhaust.
Yes. 2010 models require removal and relocation of the rear exhaust hangers, and require additional 3/8" hardware (carriage bolts, spacers, and flange nuts) to secure the relocated exhaust hangers. 2011 models do not require exhaust hanger relocation. On the driver side of 2010 models, one additional 7/16 x 1.5" carriage bolt and SP2 spacer are installed in the lower hole on the outside of the frame rail.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to CURT 11048 must be supported by 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. For further information, see the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com.
