Yes, the 56344 custom wiring harness is designed for Jeep Compass vehicles in the SUVs, Mini & Full-Sized Vans category. The manual confirms this as the primary application.
The 56344 is a custom wiring harness that connects your vehicle's taillight wiring to a 4-flat connector, allowing you to tow a trailer. It includes a converter box that processes the vehicle's taillight signals for trailer use.
You will need a panel trim removal tool. The manual also indicates you may need a drill with a 3/32" bit if a suitable existing grounding point is not available near the taillight connector.
Yes, you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. This is the first step in the installation process and is required for safety.
Open the tailgate and remove the two plastic fasteners holding each taillight assembly in place. Carefully remove both taillights, taking care not to damage the alignment tabs. The manual provides four new fasteners for reinstalling the taillight assemblies after the harness is connected.
Locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors. Partially slide out the red lock on the top of each connector. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Drilling may be required if a suitable existing grounding point is not available near the taillight connector. If drilling is necessary, you will drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided grounding screw. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the harness end with the green wire down through the opening under the driver side taillight, over to the passenger side along the backside of the bumper, and up through the opening under the passenger side taillight. The black converter box should be adhered to a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight using the provided double-sided tape. The black power wire from the battery should be routed as shown on the included CME-PCL-INS sheet.
Mount the black converter box on a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight. Use the provided double-sided tape to adhere it securely.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. When in use, route it to the center of the vehicle. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
The 56344 has the following circuit ratings: Signal Circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side, and Tail/Running Circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
The battery connection must be fuse protected with a maximum of 10 amps. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
After installation is complete, test the wiring harness for proper function by using a test light or by connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the harness functions properly.
Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. The battery connection must be fuse protected with a maximum of 10 amps.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including the taillight assemblies using the four new fasteners provided. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
