Yes, the Curt 56380 Custom Wiring Harness is designed for Volkswagen Beetle passenger cars. The installation locations are behind the driver side taillight housing (P3) and passenger side taillight housing (P4), both accessed from inside the trunk.
The harness is rated for 3.0 amps per side on signal circuits and 6.0 amps total on tail/running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower, as exceeding this can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
You will need: ratchet, ratchet extension, T-30 Torx bit, panel trim removal tool, wire stripper, wire crimper, cutting tool, and fish wire.
The manual does not explicitly state whether the battery must be disconnected before installation. Consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for safety guidance specific to your Beetle.
Open the vehicle trunk and remove all trunk floor coverings and storage trays to access the installation area.
Remove the fastener and center latch cover securing the rear scuff panel, then pull the scuff panel straight up. Take care not to damage the alignment tabs on the back of the panel.
The taillight wiring harness connectors are located behind the interior side felt liner. Access them by removing the fasteners securing the interior side felt liner and locating the access panel. The connectors will be similar to those on the custom wiring harness.
Separate the connectors from the taillight housing by pulling back on the red locking tab and pressing down on the main locking tab. Take care not to damage the locking tabs during this process.
Insert the custom wiring harness end with the yellow wire between the separated driver side connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
You may use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame as a grounding point, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw if no suitable existing point is available. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the custom wiring harness end with the green wire down behind the interior side felt liner and out to the passenger side behind the removed scuff panel. Repeat the driver side installation steps (3-6) on the passenger side using the harness end with the green wire.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape.
Route the black power wire from the vehicle battery as shown on the included CME-PCL-INS sheet. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. When in use, route it to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk.
Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent tangling and ensure proper routing.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness will function properly.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including trunk floor coverings, storage trays, scuff panel, and interior side felt liner. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
