Yes. CURT part number 12142 is designed for 2015-present Jeep Renegade SUVs. Before installation, verify that your hitch matches the vehicle photo and hitch illustration provided in the installation instructions.
The CURT 12142 is rated for a maximum of 3500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Always verify your Jeep Renegade's factory towing limits before towing.
Non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this hitch must be supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. Refer to the CURT catalog or www.curtmfg.com for information on the 18050 stabilizing straps.
Required tools are: ratchet, 3/4" socket, 21 mm socket, 8" socket extension, die grinder, torque wrench, utility knife, universal joint socket, and offset screwdriver. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce installation time.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. Contact CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634 for clarification on this step.
No drilling is required. However, the rearmost holes on each frame rail must be enlarged using a die grinder to allow the carriage bolts and spacers to be inserted into the frame rail. Additionally, caulk near the mounting holes must be cleared away as necessary using a utility knife.
Fishwire is used to thread the 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers (CM-SP10) into the frame rail mounting holes before the hitch is raised into position. Four pieces of 1/2" fishwire are included. You thread one carriage bolt and one spacer into the forwardmost holes on the outside of each frame rail, and reverse-thread one carriage bolt and one spacer into the rearmost hole on the bottom of each frame rail. The wires are kept attached until the hitch is raised into position, then removed and replaced with 1/2" hex flange nuts.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft.-lbs. If your vehicle has a factory tow hook, the factory M14 hardware must be torqued to 135 ft.-lbs instead.
If your vehicle has a factory tow hook, remove the M14 bolts in the mounting locations using a 21 mm socket and skip to step 5 (raising the hitch into position). Then loosely install the factory M14 hardware and torque it to 135 ft.-lbs. Do not perform the hole enlargement or fishwire steps.
The hitch includes: (4) 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts, 1-1/2" long, grade 8, zinc-plated (part 10-10287); (4) 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8, zinc-plated (part 20-00062); (4) pieces of 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE); and (4) square hole spacers, 0.250" × 1.00" × 2.50" (part CM-SP10).
1. Remove the rearmost rubber plugs on the bottom of each frame rail and the forwardmost rubber plugs on the outside of each frame rail. 2. Enlarge the rearmost hole on each frame rail with a die grinder. 3. Clear away caulk near mounting holes using a utility knife. 4. Thread fishwire with carriage bolts and spacers into the forwardmost holes (outside) and rearmost holes (bottom) of each frame rail, leaving fasteners in the frame. 5. Raise the hitch into position, threading the fishwires into the mounting holes. Remove fishwire and loosely install 1/2" hex flange nuts. 6. Torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft.-lbs.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the hitch.
The CURT 12142 is designed for use with ball mount #45521. A euro mount option is also available: part 45571 (1 7/8" ball) or part 45572 (2" ball).
The installation is rated as moderate difficulty. Before you begin, read all instructions thoroughly. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
