Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Mazda CX-9 (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 4,000 lbs. GTW and 600 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 5,000 lbs. WD and 600 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
CURT custom wiring connectors are the easiest way to outfit your vehicle with a CURT trailer wiring connection. They are built with some of the most advanced technology in the industry, and each one is custom-fitted to work with a specific make and model. Some automotive manufacturers install a special socket on the vehicle to be used for vehicle-to-trailer wiring. Although this special socket is not equipped on every vehicle, a CURT custom wiring connector -- also called a T-connector -- utilizes the socket for simple, stress-free installation. Rather than requiring you to cut, splice and solder into your vehicle's wiring system, the custom wiring connector uses a single OEM-compatible plug and instantly provides a standard, universal vehicle-to-trailer wiring connection, typically in the form a 4-way flat. All CURT custom wiring connectors are made vehicle-specific for the easiest possible installation and the best fit. This particular plug-in connector provides a 4-way flat socket and is designed to be a custom wiring option for certain years of the Mazda CX9 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware to establish a solid connection. It also comes with a dust cover to keep the connector socket clean when not in use. To ensure long-lasting reliability, all CURT custom wiring connectors are thoroughly tested for optimal functionality. Stress is the last thing you should feel when towing a trailer -- whether you're hauling your RV to that favorite camping destination, your ATVs up to the hunting grounds or your fishing boat to the new hidden hotspot. At CURT, we think your towing equipment should add to the enjoyment of your experience, not detract from it.

The 16 - 23 Mazda CX-9 Curt 2" Class 3 Trailer Tow Hitch + 5-Flat Wiring Kit Tow Boat/Utility Trailer with Surge Brakes 13284 (Part #5W-CHW-2282) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, CURT part number 13284 is designed for 2016-Current Mazda CX-9 SUVs. The hitch is a weight-carrying model with a gross load capacity of 4000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch, or 5000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight distribution hitch. Always verify that your vehicle's towing capacity does not exceed these limits.
The hitch weight is 34 lbs.
When used as a weight-carrying hitch, the gross load capacity is 4000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight. When used as a weight distribution hitch, the capacity is 5000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch capacity.
You will need: a ratchet, 10mm and 3/4" sockets, a torque wrench, a flathead screwdriver, a 6" socket extension, and safety glasses. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce installation time.
No. The CURT 13284 is a no-drill application. It uses existing holes in the frame rails and access holes to route fishwire hardware for bolt installation.
The hitch includes: four (4) 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts, grade 8, 1-1/2" long (part 10-10287); four (4) 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8 (part 20-00062); four (4) 0.250 x 1.00 x 3.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP6); and four (4) 1/2" fishwires (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, CURT recommends contacting an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Remove the lower trim panel from the vehicle by removing two (2) plastic fasteners using a flathead screwdriver and two (2) hex nuts using a 10mm socket. Return the trim panel to the vehicle owner.
Remove four (4) rubber exhaust hangers using exhaust removal pliers or the method shown in the manual. Make sure the exhaust is supported during removal so it does not fall or become damaged.
Fishwire is used to guide the carriage bolts and spacers through the frame rail access holes and into the existing holes in the frame rails. In step 3, you fishwire one 1/2" carriage bolt and one CM-SP6 spacer through the access hole and into the forward-most hole in each frame rail, leaving the fishwires attached. In step 4, you reverse fishwire one 1/2" carriage bolt and one CM-SP6 spacer through the access hole in each frame rail, again leaving the fishwires attached. The fishwires are then removed in step 5 when the hitch is raised into position.
After raising the hitch into position and guiding the fishwire ends through the attachment holes, remove the fishwires and secure the hitch with four (4) 1/2" hex flange nuts (part 20-00062). Then torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 ft-lbs.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This includes the four carriage bolts (part 10-10287) and four flange nuts (part 20-00062).
After torquing all fasteners, raise the exhaust back into position and reinstall the four rubber exhaust hangers that were removed in step 2.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a retorque interval, so contact CURT technical support at 877-287-8634 for guidance on maintenance schedules.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. When removing the exhaust hangers, make sure the exhaust is supported so it does not fall. Before beginning installation, read all instructions thoroughly.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The hitch has a maximum capacity of 4000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight as a weight-carrying hitch, or 5000 lbs trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight as a weight distribution hitch, but your vehicle's manufacturer may specify a lower limit that must be observed.
Yes, CURT 13284 fits 2016-Current Mazda CX-9 SUVs. Maximum capacity is 4000 lbs trailer / 600 lbs tongue weight (weight-carrying) or 5000 lbs trailer / 600 lbs tongue weight (weight distribution). Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's towing capacity.

Yes, you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. This is the first step in the installation process and is required for safety.
The vehicle connector is located behind the passenger side rear access panel. To access it, you must open the rear hatch, remove floor coverings and storage trays, remove the scuff panel, unscrew the tire jack, remove cargo loops from the rear trim panel using a 10mm socket, and then pull back the rear trim panel to expose the connector.
Insert the custom connector end into the vehicle connector, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs in place. The custom connector is designed to match the vehicle connector, so alignment should be straightforward.
Mount the black converter box on a flat spot behind the side trim panel using the double-sided tape provided with the connector. Secure any loose parts of the wiring connector with the provided cable ties.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent damage and maintain a clean appearance.
Test the connector for proper function by using a test light or by connecting a properly wired trailer. All connections must be complete for the harness to function properly. For the initial test, reset the electrical system by temporarily removing the vehicle key from the ignition.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
