CURT part 56383 is a powered converter lead and trailer wiring harness system designed for SUVs and vans. It converts the vehicle's taillight signals (left turn, right turn, brake, and tail/running lights) into a standard 4-flat trailer connector. The system includes a black converter box that processes the signals and a power lead that connects to the vehicle battery for operation.
CURT 56383 is designed for SUVs and vans with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. The manual does not list specific vehicle makes, models, or years. Check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm it has a 12-volt negative ground system. For specific vehicle compatibility, contact CURT or consult a fitment database.
No. The manual explicitly states this converter system is to be used only on 12-volt negative ground systems. It is not compatible with 24-volt systems or positive ground vehicles.
Required tools are: ratchet, ratchet extension, socket (10mm), wire crimper, wire stripper, cutting tool, and panel trim removal tool. These tools are needed for removing interior panels, disconnecting the battery, crimping wire connections, and securing the harness.
The kit includes: a custom wiring harness with yellow, green, white, and black wires; a black converter box; a white ground wire with ring terminal; a provided screw for grounding; double-sided tape for mounting the converter box; cable ties for securing loose wires; a 4-flat dust cover; and a 15-amp fuse holder with 15-amp fuse.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate the vehicle battery and disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery. Reconnect it only after all other installation steps are complete and the fuse is installed.
The installation is rated as Moderate difficulty. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.
For SUVs and vans, the taillight wiring harness connectors are located behind the interior side panels. The driver side connector is behind the driver side interior side panel (location S1 or S3 depending on access), and the passenger side connector is behind the passenger side interior side panel (location S2 or S4). You access these by removing the scuff panel and pulling out the interior side panels.
Locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors. Separate the connector from the taillight housing by carefully removing the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on both sides of the vehicle.
Mount the black converter box on a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight using the provided double-sided tape. The converter box should be positioned after routing the custom wiring harness end with the green wire down behind the interior side panel and out to the passenger side.
Route the black 12-gauge power wire from the vehicle battery to the converter, taking care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. When the trailer is in use, route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll up and store the 4-flat in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Not necessarily. Locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable existing point is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The grounding area should be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Always check for hidden items behind or under any surface before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole if a suitable existing grounding point is not available. This hole is for the provided screw that secures the white ground wire ring terminal to the vehicle frame.
Signal circuits (left turn, right turn): 5.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 7.5 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Use a 15-amp maximum fuse. The fuse holder with 15-amp fuse is provided in the kit. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete, including battery reconnection.
The power lead uses 12-gauge wire or larger. This wire connects from the vehicle battery to the converter system.
Yellow wire: Left turn signal. Green wire: Right turn signal. Red wire: Brake signal. Brown wire: Tail/running lights. White wire: Ground. Black wire: Power (connects to positive battery terminal). The yellow wire connects to the driver side taillight harness, and the green wire connects to the passenger side taillight harness.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring. Route the black 12-gauge power wire to the positive battery terminal using a ring terminal connector. Secure the ring terminal to the positive battery post. After all other installation steps are complete, install the 15-amp fuse in the fuse holder. Finally, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. This prevents the wire from being damaged and causing electrical faults or fire hazards.
Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Additionally, always check for hidden items before drilling, and route the power wire to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
After installation, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. This verifies that all signal circuits (left turn, right turn, brake, and tail/running lights) are functioning correctly before towing.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Check the 4-flat connector and dust cover regularly, especially if the trailer is used frequently or stored in harsh conditions.
