Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Volkswagen Tiguan (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 525 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Volkswagen Tiguan (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

Yes, CURT part number 13381 is designed for 2018-present Volkswagen Tiguan SUVs. Confirm your vehicle year matches this range before purchasing.
The CURT 13381 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 525 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
You will need a ratchet, torque wrench, safety glasses, and 13mm and 16mm sockets. A 13mm socket is used to remove exhaust hanger bolts, and a 16mm socket is used for factory hardware bolts (if present).
No, drilling is not required. The CURT 13381 uses existing frame mounting points and either factory hardware or a fishwire method with spacers.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning installation.
The first step is to lower the exhaust by removing two bolts from each rear exhaust hanger bracket (one per side) using a 13mm socket. This provides clearance to raise the hitch into position.
Yes, if present on 2022 and newer models, remove the plastic shroud connecting the frame and bumper cover rear of the muffler and return it to the vehicle owner.
Vehicles with factory hardware: Remove four M10-1.5 x 40mm bolts from the outside of the frame rails (two per side) using a 16mm socket, then raise the hitch and reinstall these bolts. Vehicles without factory hardware: Use the fishwire method—thread a 7/16" carriage bolt and CM-SP2 spacer through the access hole in the bottom of the frame rails, then raise the hitch, feed the fishwires through the mounting holes, pull the hardware out of the frame, and secure with 7/16" nuts.
All M10 bolts must be torqued to 45 ft-lbs. This applies to vehicles with factory hardware.
All 7/16" hardware (bolts and nuts) must be torqued to 59 ft-lbs. This applies to vehicles without factory hardware.
After raising the hitch into position, reinstall the exhaust by raising it back into position and reinstalling the remaining fasteners that were removed in step 1 (the exhaust hanger bolts).
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance is important for safe towing.
The kit includes four 7/16-14 UNC carriage bolts (part 10-10282), four 0.250 x 0.88 x 2.25" square hole spacers (CM-SP2), four 7/16-14 UNC serrated flange nuts (part 20-00103), and four 7/16" fishwires. Vehicles with factory hardware will reuse existing M10-1.5 x 40mm bolts.
Yes, the CURT 13381 complies with safety specifications and requirements for connecting devices and towing systems of the state of New York, V.E.S.C. Regulation V-5 and SAE J684.

The CURT 56403 is a powered converter module designed for SUVs and vans. It converts vehicle taillight signals into trailer lighting signals. The product includes a converter box, custom wiring harness with yellow and green leads, power wire, ground wire with ring terminal, cable ties, double-sided tape, and a 4-flat dust cover.
The CURT 56403 is designed for SUVs and vans with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. The manual does not list specific vehicle makes, models, or years. Contact CURT Group or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
You will need: ratchet, utility knife, 10mm socket, wire crimper, socket extension, wire stripper, and panel trim removal tool. These tools are required to access wiring locations, remove interior panels, crimp wire connections, and secure fasteners.
The kit includes: a black converter box, custom wiring harness with yellow and green leads, 12-gauge black power wire, white ground wire with ring terminal, provided screw for grounding, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties for securing loose wires, and a 4-flat dust cover. A 15-amp fuse holder and fuse are also included.
Yes. The manual explicitly states: 'Disconnect negative battery (-) cable before wiring the power wire.' This must be done before routing and connecting the 12-gauge black power wire to the vehicle battery.
The installation is rated as Moderate difficulty. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and states that proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.
The manual identifies eight wiring locations for SUVs and vans: S1 (behind driver side taillight housing), S2 (behind passenger side taillight housing), S3 (behind driver side rear access panel), S4 (behind passenger side rear access panel), S5 (behind driver side rear bumper), S6 (behind center of rear bumper), S7 (behind passenger side rear bumper), and S8 (under rear floor panel). The specific locations you use depend on your vehicle's layout.
1. Remove the side trim panel and locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connector. 2. Separate the connector from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. 3. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. 4. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on both driver and passenger sides.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight. Adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter should be mounted in a location that is accessible and protected from moisture and damage.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll up the 4-flat and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
You may need to drill a hole depending on your vehicle. First, locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw. Always check for hidden items behind or under any surface before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the 12-gauge black power wire from the vehicle battery, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
Signal circuits: 5.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 7.5 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole if a suitable existing screw point is not available. The area must be free of rust, dirt, and paint before securing the white ground wire with the ring terminal and provided screw.
The power wire is 12-gauge (12 GA) or larger. This wire connects from the vehicle battery to the converter system and must be routed carefully to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components.
Yellow wire: Left turn signal. Green wire: Right turn signal. Red wire: Brake signal. Brown wire: Taillight/running light. White wire: Ground. Black wire: Power (12-gauge, connects to positive battery terminal). These colors follow standard trailer wiring conventions.
The maximum fuse rating is 15 amps. The fuse holder with 15-amp fuse must be installed after all other installation steps are complete. The battery connection must be fuse-protected; exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. The manual explicitly states: 'Use ring terminal for battery connection.' The ring terminal provides a secure, corrosion-resistant connection to the positive battery terminal.
The CURT 56403 is designed exclusively for 12-volt negative ground systems. The manual states: 'This converter system is to be used only on 12 volt negative ground systems.' Do not use this product on positive ground or 24-volt systems.
Key warnings: (1) Do not exceed product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating. (2) Battery connection must be fuse-protected, 15-amp max. Exceeding the rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. (3) Check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury. (4) Route power wire to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. (5) Disconnect negative battery cable before wiring the power wire. (6) Use a ring terminal for battery connection.
Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. This confirms that all signal circuits (left turn, right turn, brake) and tail/running light circuits are functioning correctly before towing.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Check the 4-flat connector and dust cover regularly, especially if the trailer is used frequently. Ensure the fuse remains intact and the battery connection stays secure.
