However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Volkswagen Beetle (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 1,500 lbs. GTW and 150 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Volkswagen Beetle (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

The CURT 11354 hitch fits 2012-current Volkswagen Beetle Convertible (all trim levels) and Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback with gas turbo engine only. It does not fit naturally aspirated (non-turbo) Beetle Hatchback models. Verify your engine type before purchasing.
The CURT 11354 is rated for a maximum of 1,500 lbs trailer weight and 150 lbs tongue weight as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower. Check your vehicle's owner manual for the final towing limit.
The CURT 11354 is designed for use with ball mount D-55001 or 45501. Euro mount options are available: part 45571 (1 7/8" ball) and part 45572 (2" ball). Purchase the ball mount separately.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to the CURT 11354 must be supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. Do not use the hitch for non-trailer loads without these straps.
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, 18mm socket, 19mm socket, 3/4" socket, and 10" socket extension. Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation.
No, drilling is not required. The CURT 11354 uses existing factory weldnuts and bolts on the frame rails, so no drilling, cutting, or welding is needed.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. You can reach CURT technical support at 877-287-8634.
1. Remove the existing bolt from both driver and passenger sides of the vehicle and retain it for reuse. 2. Reverse fishwire the 1/2"-13 x 1 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP17 spacers into the driver and passenger side frame rails. 3. Raise the hitch into position. 4. Secure the hitch with 1/2"-13 hex flange nuts onto the carriage bolts, then install the factory M12 bolts from step 1 through the hitch and into the existing vehicle weldnuts. 5. Torque all fasteners to specification.
Torque the 1/2"-13 hardware (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) to 110 lb-ft. Torque the M12-1.50 factory bolts to 83 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure accuracy.
The kit includes: 2x CM-SP17 spacers (0.250 x 1.25 x 2.50" square hole), 2x 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts grade 8 (part 10-10287), 2x 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts grade 8 (part 20-00062), and 2x 1/2" fishwire. The factory M12 bolts are removed and reused; they are not included in the kit.
Reverse fishwire is a technique where you thread the 1/2"-13 x 1 1/2" carriage bolts and CM-SP17 spacers into the existing factory weldnuts on the frame rails from the reverse (back) side. This allows you to secure the hitch without drilling new holes. The fishwire (flexible wire) helps guide the bolts into the weldnuts.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This is especially important before towing. Retighten fasteners if any looseness is detected.
CURT Manufacturing warrants the product to be free of defects in material and workmanship at the time of retail purchase by the original purchaser. Yes, the Curt 56380 Custom Wiring Harness is designed for Volkswagen Beetle passenger cars. The installation locations are behind the driver side taillight housing (P3) and passenger side taillight housing (P4), both accessed from inside the trunk.
The harness is rated for 3.0 amps per side on signal circuits and 6.0 amps total on tail/running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower, as exceeding this can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
You will need: ratchet, ratchet extension, T-30 Torx bit, panel trim removal tool, wire stripper, wire crimper, cutting tool, and fish wire.
The manual does not explicitly state whether the battery must be disconnected before installation. Consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for safety guidance specific to your Beetle.
Open the vehicle trunk and remove all trunk floor coverings and storage trays to access the installation area.
Remove the fastener and center latch cover securing the rear scuff panel, then pull the scuff panel straight up. Take care not to damage the alignment tabs on the back of the panel.
The taillight wiring harness connectors are located behind the interior side felt liner. Access them by removing the fasteners securing the interior side felt liner and locating the access panel. The connectors will be similar to those on the custom wiring harness.
Separate the connectors from the taillight housing by pulling back on the red locking tab and pressing down on the main locking tab. Take care not to damage the locking tabs during this process.
Insert the custom wiring harness end with the yellow wire between the separated driver side connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
You may use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame as a grounding point, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw if no suitable existing point is available. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the custom wiring harness end with the green wire down behind the interior side felt liner and out to the passenger side behind the removed scuff panel. Repeat the driver side installation steps (3-6) on the passenger side using the harness end with the green wire.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape.
Route the black power wire from the vehicle battery as shown on the included CME-PCL-INS sheet. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. When in use, route it to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk.
Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent tangling and ensure proper routing.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness will function properly.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including trunk floor coverings, storage trays, scuff panel, and interior side felt liner. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
