DRAW-TITE: North America?s Favorite Hitch

Draw-Tite has designed custom-fit trailer hitches since 1946 and is one of North America's most widely fitted hitch brands. Receiver hitches use solid all-welded construction and low-profile designs that follow modern vehicle contours, install with minimal bumper cutting or drilling, meet or exceed V5 CSA and SAE J684 standards, and carry a limited lifetime warranty.
Draw-Tite has been leading custom-fit trailer hitch design and engineering since its founding in 1946, and it remains one of the most widely fitted hitch brands in North America. The company's stated approach is straightforward: every hitch is tested rigorously so that it performs well beyond published industry standards, a philosophy it markets as Tested Tough. It sits within the Horizon Global towing group alongside Reese, Fulton, Bulldog, Tekonsha, Bargman and Wesbar.
Custom fit is the defining characteristic. Rather than adapting a universal design, Draw-Tite engineers a trailer hitch for a specific make, model and model year, so it bolts to existing frame locations with minimal bumper cutting or drilling. Low-profile designs follow the rear contours and aerodynamic styling of modern vehicles, which matters more than it once did now that rear fascias are shaped and sensor-equipped. Construction is solid all-welded steel for maximum strength, and every hitch meets or exceeds V5 CSA and SAE J684 standards and is backed by a nationwide limited lifetime warranty.
The range spans receiver sizes and classes to suit different loads, from 1-1/4 inch receivers for bike racks, cargo carriers and light trailers up through 2 inch receivers for heavier towing. Front mount hitches add a receiver at the front of the vehicle for winch mounts, snow plows, spare carriers and precise trailer positioning.
The Hidden Hitch series takes concealment further by mounting behind the vehicle's rear fascia, so the vehicle keeps its factory appearance until a removable receiver is fitted. Each is custom designed per make and model for a no-drill installation that does not compromise ground clearance, rated for up to 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. Matching plug-and-play wiring completes the towing system.

The 40050 hitch fits Chevrolet & GMC pickup trucks with 34" frames, but does not fit units with a 6' bed or 4WD with heavy duty suspension. Measure the outside width of your frame—it should be approximately 34", 37-1/2", or 38". If your truck has a 6' bed or heavy duty 4WD suspension, this hitch is not compatible.
Yes, the 40050 hitch fits 1988 and later Chevrolet & GMC pickup trucks with 37-1/2" frames. However, if your truck has a 6' bed, the spare tire will have to be relocated elsewhere on the vehicle. The hitch uses the inside holes in the side brackets for 37-1/2" wide frames.
No. The hitch does not fit Dodge Ram pickup trucks equipped with heavy duty suspension.
No. The 40050 does not fit Ford F-Series Flareside units with fiberglass valance panels.
No. The 40050 does not fit Dodge Ramcharger or Plymouth Trailduster units with a steel sided fuel tank/skid shield.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing vehicle manufacturer's ratings or the ratings listed below: Weight distributing hitch: 10,000 lbs gross trailer weight with 1,000 lbs tongue weight. Weight carrying hitch: 6,000 lbs gross trailer weight with 600 lbs tongue weight. Always follow your vehicle manufacturer's specifications for maximum trailer weight and tongue weight.
Required tools include: drill bits (3/16", 9/32", 1/2", and 17/32" diameter); sockets and wrenches (3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 13mm, 18mm, 19mm); #19 soft galvanized wire or equivalent; 1/32" diameter wire or equivalent; center punch; clamps; and round and flat files.
Removal of the pickup truck spare tire from its under-bed mounting is not required for each installation but will make receiver installation easier. It is to be reinstalled when installation is complete. However, on some vehicles the spare tire will have to be relocated elsewhere: Chevrolet & GMC 37-1/2" frame with 6' bed, Dodge Ram 6' bed, and Ford F-Series 1980 and later 38" wide frame units.
On 1981 and later Chevrolet & GMC applications with step bumpers, the support brackets to the frame must be removed. These brackets must be retained for reinstallation upon removal of the receiver. The step bumper should not be used for towing with these support brackets removed. On 1988 and later Chevrolet & GMC 37-1/2" frame units with factory-installed step bumpers, the M12 hex bolts from each end of the frame must be removed and discarded. On Dodge Ram 1994-present models, the exhaust hanger bracket must be removed from the side of the frame for all models except 1995 to present 8' bed models.
On Dodge Ram pickup trucks (1994-present), the exhaust hanger bracket must be removed from the side of the frame for all models except 1995 to present 8' bed models. After installation, the exhaust must be reinstalled according to your specific model year and bed length: 1994 8' bed units require drilling a hole in the exhaust bracket to reposition it 1" forward; 1994 6' bed units require reinstalling the bracket and bending it inboard to clear the exhaust; 1995 to 1997 6' bed units require fabricating a new hanger and attaching it to the existing hole in the frame with 5/16 or M8 fasteners.
When positioning the receiver on a Dodge Ram, place 2 blocks between the side brackets and vehicle frame at each attachment to clear the lip of the frame.
For Ford cab & chassis installation, there must be 18" of unobstructed frame along with clearance for the crosstube assembly at the center of the vehicle.
No. Dodge Ram pickup trucks with 8' beds use all existing holes and require no drilling. However, Dodge Ram 6' bed models require drilling two 1/2" diameter holes for forward attachment.
Using the slots in the side brackets as templates, drill six (6) 1/2" diameter holes in the frame.
Using the slots in the side brackets as templates, drill four (4) 17/32" diameter holes.
Using the slots in the side brackets as templates, drill six (6) 17/32" diameter holes.
No. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.
On some units, even with blocks in place, the top of the rivets may have to be ground or filed off to ensure that the attaching surfaces sit flat on the frame. However, do not correct hole mismatch by drilling, because the drill can suddenly bind causing the drill motor to kick back or the drill bit to break, possibly resulting in personal injury. Instead, file or grind material from the vehicle frame to match the hole in the receiver side bracket.
Yes. Deburr all edges of any holes drilled through frame and/or crossmembers. Proper deburring will ensure that fasteners and side brackets will sit flat.
Fishwiring is used on vehicles where the gas tank is located inside the frame and blocks access to drilled holes. The technique involves sliding 1/4" × 1-1/2" × 2" blocks between the bottom edge of the frame and the gas tank, then fishwiring a 24" long piece of soft wire up through the drilled hole. A thin wire (maximum 1/32" diameter) is attached around the end of a 1/2-13 × 2" GR5 carriage bolt, then attached to the 24" length of wire. The carriage bolt is gently fed and pulled into position through the block and frame and secured with a conical toothed washer and nut. This technique is required for Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster, and Ford Bronco installations.
Tighten the 9/16-18 GR5 hex bolts to 110 lb.-ft.
Tighten 1/2-13 GR5 carriage bolts to 75 lb.-ft.
Tighten M12 × 1.75 CL 10.9 hex bolts to 75 lb.-ft.
Install 9/16-18 × 1-1/2 GR5 hex bolts, hardened flat washers, and flange locknuts as shown. Do not tighten at this time. Do not use one long through-bolt or substitute regular nuts for the locknuts inside the crosstube assembly.
Position and center the receiver assembly on the vehicle frame. The rearmost slot in the receiver should not be located closer than 3/4" from the end of the frame (for Chevrolet & GMC 34" frames and Ford F-Series 1979 and earlier). For Dodge Pickup Configuration 1 (8' bed), locate the rearmost slot 1" forward from the edge of the large existing hole at the end of the frame to prevent the forward attaching flange from riding on the crossmember rivet. For Dodge Ram, center the rearmost hole over the existing .531 diameter hole (not the large hole) at the end of the frame.
The 9/16-18 GR5 hex bolts in the crosstube assembly are installed loosely during the initial assembly on page 1. They should be tightened to 110 lb.-ft. after the receiver is positioned and clamped to the frame, and before or after drilling the side bracket attachment holes depending on the vehicle application. Always center the receiver crosstube assembly on the vehicle before final tightening.
Use blocks to clear rivets and frame lips. The manual specifies 1/4" × 1-1/2" × 2" blocks for use between the bottom edge of the frame and the gas tank on Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster, and Ford Bronco installations. For other vehicles, place blocks between side brackets and vehicle frame at attachment points as needed to ensure the receiver sits flat.
When holes do not match precisely, file or grind material from the vehicle frame to match the hole in the receiver side bracket. Do not correct hole mismatch by drilling, because the drill can suddenly bind causing the drill motor to kick back or the drill bit to break, possibly resulting in personal injury. On some vehicles, existing holes in the frame may line up with some of the holes in the receiver side brackets.
On 1999 Dodge Ram units, the center hole in the side bracket misses lining up with the existing hole in the frame by ½ a hole. The hole in the frame will have to be enlarged to match the hole in the side bracket.
To retain under-vehicle spare tire stowage on Ford F-Series 1980 and later 38" wide frame units, either remove the tube on the end of the spare tire carrier, or relocate the J-bolt on the passenger's side to the crossmember by drilling a hole in the crossmember.
On 6' bed units, remove and relocate the ground wire and ground wire bolt located on the driver's side frame rail.
First, center punch the head of the rivet located at the end of each frame rail. Use a 3/16" diameter drill to drill a pilot hole up through the center of the rivet. Change to a 1/2" diameter drill and drill up through the pilot hole to remove the rivet. Take care when drilling through the bottom and top heads of the rivet (body is 7/16" diameter) so the drill does not twist out of your grip. Position the receiver assembly over the drilled out rivet holes and install M12 × 1.75 × 45mm bolt and hardened flat washer through frame and crossmember and secure with conical toothed washer and nut. Tighten M12 × 1.75 × 45mm CL10.9 hex bolts to 75 lb.-ft. Then drill four (4) 17/32" diameter holes using the slots in the side brackets as templates. Use the fishwiring technique to install 1/2-13 × 2" GR5 carriage bolts through the forward and center drilled holes.
Position and center the receiver assembly on the vehicle frame. Place two (2) blocks between side brackets and vehicle frame at first and center attachments to clear rivets. Clamp receiver to frame. Using the rearmost slots in the side brackets as templates, center punch and drill two (2) 1/2" diameter holes. Install fasteners in the rearmost slot on each side and tighten to 75 lb.-ft. Center the receiver crosstube assembly and tighten the 9/16-18 GR5 hex bolts to 110 lb.-ft. With bolts in rearmost holes tightened, force forward attachment flanges outboard such that the inboard portion of the slots are centered on the frame. Using the forward attaching slots as templates, center punch and drill two (2) 1/2" diameter holes, ensuring the drilled hole is centered on the frame flange. Install fasteners in forward attachment. Using the center attaching slots as templates, center punch and drill two (2) 1/2" diameter holes and install fasteners, making sure the two (2) blocks are between side brackets and frame.
Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle and wear eye protection. Always wear safety glasses when drilling. Be careful to avoid drilling into the fuel tank, wires, and fuel or brake lines that are sometimes located inside the vehicle frame sections. Do not correct hole mismatch by drilling, because the drill can suddenly bind causing the drill motor to kick back or the drill bit to break, possibly resulting in personal injury.
Check the hitch frequently, making sure all fasteners and ball are properly tightened. A hitch or ball which has been damaged should be removed and replaced.
No. The step bumper should not be used for towing with support brackets removed. On 1981 and later Chevrolet & GMC applications with step bumpers, the support brackets to the frame must be removed for hitch installation, but these brackets must be retained for reinstallation upon removal of the receiver.
Measure the outside width of the frame. It should measure approximately 34", 37-1/2", or 38". The inside holes in the side brackets are used for 37-1/2" and 38" wide frames, and the outside holes are used for 34" wide frames.
No. Do not drill new holes in any receiver part.
When positioning the receiver on the vehicle frame, make sure that the crosstube assembly does not contact any gas tank supports or spare tire hanger brackets if the vehicle is so equipped.
The license plate mounting bracket will have to be relocated on vehicles without a factory-installed bumper.
The 40050 fits Chevrolet & GMC pickup trucks (34" and 37-1/2" frames, excluding 6' bed or 4WD heavy duty suspension); Dodge pickup trucks full size (1967-1993 and 1994-present, excluding heavy duty suspension); Dodge Ramcharger & Plymouth Trailduster (excluding steel sided fuel tank); Ford F-Series full size pickup trucks (1979 and earlier, 1980 and later excluding Flareside with fiberglass valance); Ford Bronco full size; and Ford cab & chassis (1999 and later F350 Super Duty). Measure your frame width (should be 34", 37-1/2", or 38") and check the specific exclusions for your model year.
You will need drill bits (3/16", 9/32", 1/2", 17/32"), sockets and wrenches (3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 13mm, 18mm, 19mm), soft galvanized wire (#19), thin wire (1/32" diameter), center punch, clamps, and round and flat files.
Removing the spare tire from under-bed mounting is optional but makes installation easier. However, some vehicles require permanent relocation: Chevrolet & GMC 37-1/2" frame with 6' bed, Dodge Ram 6' bed, and Ford F-Series 1980+ with 38" frame. Step bumper support brackets must be removed on 1981+ Chevrolet & GMC 34" frame units. Exhaust hanger brackets must be removed on Dodge Ram (except 1995+ 8' bed).
Drilling is required for most applications. Hole sizes vary by vehicle: 1/2" for Chevrolet & GMC and most Ford applications, 17/32" for Dodge Ramcharger, Plymouth Trailduster, and Ford Bronco. Dodge Ram 8' bed uses all existing holes (no drilling). Dodge Ram 6' bed requires drilling two 1/2" holes for forward attachment. Do not use a torch to cut holes.
Tighten 9/16-18 GR5 hex bolts (crosstube) to 110 lb.-ft. Tighten 1/2-13 GR5 carriage bolts to 75 lb.-ft. Tighten M12 × 1.75 CL 10.9 hex bolts to 75 lb.-ft.
Do not exceed the lower of your vehicle manufacturer's ratings or: weight distributing hitch 10,000 lbs GTW (1,000 lbs tongue weight) or weight carrying hitch 6,000 lbs GTW (600 lbs tongue weight). Always follow your vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
Check the hitch frequently, making sure all fasteners and ball are properly tightened. A hitch or ball which has been damaged should be removed and replaced. Wear eye protection when working beneath the vehicle.
