However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the BMW 328xi and 335xi (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.

A drill with 17/32" drill bit is required on some models (gas models with single muffler only).
The kit includes: 16 flat washers (7/16"), 2 hex head cap screws (7/16"-14 UNC, 1-1/4"), 2 serrated flange nuts (7/16"-14 UNC), 2 carriage bolts (1/2"-13 UNC, 1-1/2"), 2 serrated flange nuts (1/2"-13 UNC), 2 square hole spacers (0.250 x 1.00 x 3.00"), and 2 pieces of 1/2" fishwire.

The installation is rated as moderate difficulty. The novice (DIY) install time is approximately 60 minutes, while professional install time is approximately 30 minutes.
Drilling is required on some models only—specifically gas models with a single muffler. If mounting holes are not present in the vehicle crossmember, you must use the mounting strap as a template to mark and drill 17/32" holes. A drill with a 17/32" drill bit is required for this step.
One underbody panel must be trimmed. The trim diagram shows specific dimensions: 2.00 in, 0.75 in, 1.13 in, 2.00 in, 1.75 in, and 3.25 in. A small disk grinder is used for this trimming. After trimming, both underbody panels are re-installed.
Torque all 7/16" hardware to 70 ft-lbs, 12mm hardware to 82 ft-lbs, and 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs. A torque wrench is required to achieve these specifications.
The manual includes 1/2" fishwire in the kit and references a fishwire technique for installing 1/2" carriage bolts and SP-6 spacers into the vehicle crossmember. Yes. In Step 2, you remove 2 12mm nuts from each bumper attachment (4 total). These existing nuts are reused in Step 4 to secure the hitch into position over the studs.
The installation sequence is: (1) Remove 14 fasteners securing underbody panels; (2) Remove 2 12mm nuts from each bumper attachment; (3) Place 4 7/16" washers on each stud; (4) Lift hitch into position and secure with existing 12mm nuts; (5) Fishwire 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers into crossmember; (6) Raise mounting strap and attach with 1/2" flange nuts; (7) Attach mounting strap to hitch using 7/16" fasteners; (8) Torque all hardware to specification; (9) Trim one underbody panel; (10) Re-install both underbody panels.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning installation. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this product must be supported by 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. For further information on stabilizing straps, see the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection is critical to safe operation.
