Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Nissan Leaf (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 1,500 lbs. GTW and 150 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.

Required tools include: ratchet, torque wrench, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 17mm, and 19mm sockets, 11/16" socket, 6" extension, screwdriver, die grinder, power drill with 1/2" drill bit, rotary tool, and safety glasses. Proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce installation time.

Yes, drilling is required on the driver side. If the rear-most driver side hole is not present on your vehicle, you must raise the hitch into position, mark the hole location, lower the hitch, and drill the marked hole using a 1/2" drill bit. Before drilling, ensure all existing holes are aligned. You must also enlarge the driver side access hole to allow 7/16" hardware to pass through.
Yes, the underbody panel must be trimmed. According to the trim diagram, remove a rectangular section measuring 3 inches by 3.63 inches from the underbody panel. The panel is then reinstalled using the original fasteners after trimming is complete.
Torque specifications are: 7/16" hardware to 70 ft-lbs, M10 hardware to 48 ft-lbs, and M12 hardware to 90 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure all fasteners are tightened to the correct specification.
The kit includes: 2 x 7/16-14 UNC Grade 8 carriage bolts (part 10-10282), 2 x 7/16" serrated flange nuts (part 20-00103), 2 x 7/16" fishwire (part 7_16 FISHWIRE), 2 x 0.250 x 0.88 x 2.25" square hole spacers (part CM-SP2), and 3 x M10-1.25 hex flange nuts (part 20-00195). The passenger side uses existing vehicle fasteners (either M12 or M10 depending on model).
Retain the underbody panel and its fasteners for reinstallation in Step 10. On the passenger side, retain either 2 of the 4 M12 bolts or all 3 M10 bolts (depending on your model) that secure the tow loop to the frame rail—these will be reused. Return the tow loop and 2 of the 4 M12 bolts to the vehicle owner.
Fishwire is used to route the 7/16" carriage bolt and SP2 spacer through the enlarged driver side access hole and out the rear-most hole (Step 5). Then reverse fishwire the carriage bolt and spacer back into the enlarged access hole (Step 6). This technique allows the hardware to be positioned before the hitch is fully raised into place.
After installation, verify that all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners remain tight and structural components remain sound during the life of the product. This ongoing inspection helps maintain safe towing operation.
