Connect to your lifestyle with a custom hitch receiver from CURT. All of our custom hitches are designed for a vehicle-specific fit, manufactured with pride, finished for industry-leading rust resistance and tested to rigorous SAE J684 standards for safety. This class 1 trailer hitch and ball mount combination is designed for a custom fit on select years of the Nissan Leaf (see application info to verify fitment). The hitch integrates with the vehicle's frame and provides a useful and dependable 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver. The receiver is perfect for attaching the included ball mount and towing a small trailer, or for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted cargo carrier, bike rack or other accessory. This particular class 1 hitch is rated for 1,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 150 pounds tongue weight (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). The ball mount included with this trailer hitch quickly and easily installs into the hitch receiver and has a 3/4" trailer ball hole (trailer ball not included). It can be mounted in the rise or drop position to promote level towing. Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 1 hitch is protected with our co-cured finishing process. It is descaled for a smooth surface, immersed in liquid A-coat for rust resistance inside and out, covered with a durable black powder coat and finally co-cured for an industry-leading rust, chip and UV-resistant shield. No matter where you're headed or which season of the year you’re towing in, this CURT hitch is equipped for long-lasting resilience to the elements. It features an open-back receiver for easy cleaning, and it comes with all the hardware necessary for the installation.
Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles (bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically)

Yes, CURT part number 11396 is designed for 2011-Present Nissan Leaf Hatchback models. Before purchasing, confirm your vehicle is a Leaf Hatchback and verify the year is 2011 or later. Make sure your hitch matches the vehicle photo and hitch illustration provided in the manual.
The CURT 11396 is rated for a maximum of 1,500 lbs trailer weight and 150 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower. Always verify your Nissan Leaf's towing limits in your vehicle owner's manual.

Yes. CURT recommends the use of 18050 stabilizing straps for all non-trailer (wheel-less) loads. All non-trailer loads applied to this hitch must be supported by these straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for further information on stabilizing straps.
Required tools include: ratchet, torque wrench, sockets (10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 17mm, and 11/16"), 6" extension, screwdriver, die grinder, power drill with 1/2" drill bit, rotary tool, and safety glasses. Proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce installation time.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance. Technical support is available at 800.798.0813.
Professional installation takes approximately 35 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation takes approximately 70 minutes. Actual time may vary depending on your experience level and whether all existing holes are present on your vehicle.
Possibly. If the rear-most driver side hole is not present on your vehicle, you will need to raise the hitch into position, mark the hole location, lower the hitch, and drill the marked hole. Before drilling, make sure all existing holes are aligned. You will also need to enlarge the driver side access hole to allow 7/16" hardware to pass through.
A 1/2" drill bit is required. This is used to drill the rear-most driver side hole if it is not already present on your vehicle. A power drill is needed to perform this drilling.
Yes. After securing the hitch, you must trim the underbody panel as shown in the trim diagram in the manual. The trim area is indicated in green on the diagram, with dimensions of 3.63 inches by 3 inches. A die grinder or rotary tool is recommended for this task. After trimming, reinstall the underbody panel using the fasteners removed in the first step.
Torque all 7/16" hardware to 70 ft-lbs. Torque all M10 hardware to 48 ft-lbs. Torque all M12 hardware to 90 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper fastener tightness.
The kit includes: (2) 7/16-14 hex flange nuts, (2) 7/16-14 x 1 1/2" carriage bolts, (2) 7/16" fishwire, (2) .250 x .88 x 2.25" square hole spacers (CM-SP2), and (3) M10 - 1.25 hex flange nuts. The passenger side uses existing M12 or M10 fasteners from the vehicle frame.
Yes. You will reuse existing fasteners from your vehicle. Depending on your model, you will retain either (2) M12 bolts or (3) M10 bolts that originally secured the tow loop to the passenger side frame rail. These are used to secure the passenger side of the hitch. The tow loop and any extra fasteners should be returned to the owner.
Fishwire is a flexible wire tool used to route fasteners through tight spaces. In the CURT 11396 installation, you fishwire the 7/16" carriage bolt and SP2 spacer through the enlarged driver side access hole and out the rear-most hole. Then you reverse fishwire the second carriage bolt and spacer into the enlarged access hole. This allows you to secure the driver side of the hitch.
After installation, verify that the underbody panel has been properly trimmed and reinstalled. Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection is important for safe operation and to maintain your warranty.
You should periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Regular inspection helps prevent loosening of fasteners due to vibration and wear, and maintains the safety and integrity of the installation.
