Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the BMW X1 (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 2,500 lbs. GTW and 250 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

Yes, replacement M6 black rivets (part 10-10401) are included with the hitch. Two rivets are supplied to replace the nylon rivets removed from the rear fascia during installation.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. However, step 1 requires unplugging back-up sensors from the rear fascia. Contact CURT technical support at 877-287-8634 for guidance on whether battery disconnection is necessary before unplugging electrical components.

Four 12mm nuts from the bumper attachments on both sides (two per side) will be removed and reused in step 3 to secure the hitch. These are the existing flange nuts. A 12mm bolt from the A-frame is also removed but returned to the owner and not reused.
Spacers serve two purposes: (1) washers are placed as needed between the bumper attachments and hitch plates on both sides to ensure proper fit, and (2) two 0.188 x 1.38 x 1.50" round-hole spacers (part CM-SP41) are placed between the hitch and the A-frame before securing with the 12mm bolt and conical toothed washer.
Torque all 12mm fasteners to 82 lb-ft and all 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft. These torque values apply to the hitch mounting bolts and the mounting strap fasteners.
Push the small center rod through the rivet with a small punch or equivalent tool. Pry the rivets from the trim and pop the trim off. Two nylon rivets (part 10-10401) secure the rear fascia and will be replaced with the supplied M6 black rivets after hitch installation.

The mounting strap is attached using 7/16" fasteners. The manual specifies 7/16-14 UNC grade 8 bolts (part 10-10281) and 7/16-14 UNC grade 8 serrated flange nuts (part 20-00103), along with 7/16" flat washers (part 30-00166). These fasteners are torqued to 70 lb-ft.
An M12-1.5 x 60 hex bolt (part 10-10537) with a conical toothed washer (part 30-00149) secures the two spacers between the hitch and the A-frame. This 12mm bolt is torqued to 82 lb-ft.
Reinstall the rear fascia panel. A plastic rivet gun is required to fasten the supplied M6 black rivets (part 10-10401) to secure the fascia. Two rivets are used to replace the original nylon rivets that were removed in step 1.
