Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Volvo XC90 (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 6,000 lbs. GTW and 900 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles (bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically)

Yes, CURT part number 13233 is designed for 2016–present Volvo XC90 SUVs. Before purchasing, confirm your vehicle year matches this range and verify the hitch matches your vehicle in the product photos provided in the manual.
The CURT 13233 is rated for a maximum trailer weight of 6000 lbs and a tongue weight of 900 lbs when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
Trailer weight (6000 lbs) is the total weight of the loaded trailer. Tongue weight (900 lbs) is the downward force exerted by the trailer coupler on the hitch ball. Both limits must be observed; do not exceed either specification or your vehicle manufacturer's towing capacity.
Non-trailer loads (wheel-less loads) can be carried, but only if they are supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to use stabilizing straps for non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. See the CURT catalog or www.curtmfg.com for details on the 18050 straps.
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, T25 socket, 10 mm socket, 13 mm socket, 8" extension, power drill, 1/2" drill bit, shears (or rotary cut-off wheel for heat shield trimming), die grinder, and safety glasses. A 9/16" drill bit or tap is also needed (see manual page 8 for drilling specifications).
Installation is rated as moderate difficulty. Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake the task, CURT recommends contacting an authorized CURT installer. For questions during installation, call CURT Technical Support at 877-287-8634.
Professional installation time is approximately 120 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation time is approximately 60 minutes. Actual time may vary depending on experience and vehicle condition.
Yes, drilling is required. The installation involves drilling holes in the vehicle frame and enlarging existing holes. Specific hole sizes and locations are marked using the hitch as a template. See the installation walkthrough for detailed drilling specifications and use of a die grinder.
Yes, the heat shield must be removed and trimmed. Remove the (2) M6 bolts holding the heat shield using a 10 mm socket, remove (4) speed clips from studs, then trim the heat shield along the area shown in the heat shield diagram following the curvature of the shield. Use shears or a rotary cut-off wheel for trimming.
Yes, the bumper fascia must be removed. Remove (4) fasteners from the bottom of the fascia using a T25 socket, remove (2) M10 bolts for the exhaust brackets and lower the exhaust, remove the heat shield, then remove (4) fasteners in each wheel well using a T25 socket. Gently remove the bumper fascia and detach sensors as needed, marking them for proper reattachment.
Yes, the exhaust must be lowered to ease installation. Remove (2) M10 bolts for the exhaust brackets and lower the exhaust. After the hitch is positioned, raise the exhaust back into place and loosely install the factory M10 bolts before final torquing.
Fishwire is a technique to route bolts through frame holes that are difficult to access. A 1/2" carriage bolt and spacer are threaded through fishwire from one hole to another, then the fishwire is pulled to draw the bolt into its final position. The fishwire is then carefully removed and the bolt is secured with a 1/2" hex flange nut. This allows bolts to be installed in tight spaces without direct access.
All 1/2" bolts must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness. Do not exceed this specification.
The M10 bolts must be torqued to 48 ft-lbs. These are the factory exhaust bracket bolts that are loosely installed after raising the exhaust into place.
The kit includes: (4) 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 serrated flange nuts (part 20-00062), (4) 1/2-13 UNC Grade 8 carriage bolts 1-1/2" long (part 10-10287), (4) 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE), and (4) 0.250 x 1.00 x 2.50" square hole spacers (part CM-SP10). Factory M10 exhaust bolts are reused.
Reassemble by reversing steps 1–5 in reverse order. This means: reattach sensors (marking them during removal ensures proper reattachment), reinstall the bumper fascia, reinstall the (4) fasteners in each wheel well using a T25 socket, reinstall the heat shield with (2) M6 bolts and (4) speed clips, raise the exhaust and reinstall the (2) M10 bolts, and finally reinstall the (4) fasteners attaching the bottom of the fascia using a T25 socket.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. If you are hesitant to undertake the task, contact an authorized CURT installer. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity during operation.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This maintenance is critical to safe operation and helps prevent warranty issues.
The manual recommends periodic checks to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound, but does not specify an exact interval. Regular inspection before towing is recommended as a best practice.
