A CURT trailer hitch is the key to pursuing your passions, whether you're taking the family boat out for an afternoon on the water or packing up the mountain bikes for a day on the trails. This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Buick Regal Sportback and Chevrolet Malibu (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. This class 2 hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin and mounting hardware for a complete installation.
Installation requires heat shield and fascia trimming and temporary exhaust removal
Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
Not compatible for use with vertical hanging bicycles (bike racks that require the bicycles to be hung / mounted vertically)

Yes, CURT part number 12185 is designed for 2016-Present Chevrolet Malibu Sedan models. Before purchasing, verify your vehicle matches this specification and confirm your vehicle's towing capacity meets or exceeds the hitch capacity of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight.
Yes, CURT part number 12185 is designed for 2016-Present Buick Regal Sportback models. Before purchasing, verify your vehicle matches this specification and confirm your vehicle's towing capacity meets or exceeds the hitch capacity of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight.
The CURT 12185 is rated for a maximum of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating.
Required tools are: ratchet, 8 inch socket extension, 13mm socket, 15mm socket, 11/16 inch socket, torque wrench, aviation shears, masking tape, and safety glasses. A torque wrench is essential because fasteners must be torqued to specific values (7/16 inch hardware to 60 ft-lbs and M10 hardware to 45 ft-lbs).
No, drilling is not required. The installation uses fishwire hardware to route bolts through existing access holes in the frame rails.
On Malibu models, yes: you must temporarily remove the exhaust by removing the exhaust hanger, (4) M8 bolts for the exhaust brace, and (2) M8 bolts for the exhaust flange using a 13mm socket. Save the exhaust brace and gasket for reinstallation. On Regal models, you only need to lower the exhaust by removing (2) rubber isolators; full removal is not required.
Yes. You must locate and remove (10) speed clips (5 from each side) to remove the heat shields, then trim them using aviation shears, and reinstall them on the vehicle. On Regal models only, you must also trim the lower rear fascia using the trim diagram provided in the manual.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that using proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
All 7/16 inch hardware must be torqued to 60 ft-lbs. This includes the (4) 7/16 inch flange nuts on the frame attachments.
All M10 hardware must be torqued to 45 ft-lbs. This includes the (2) M10 flange nuts on the inside lower bumper bolts.
The kit includes: (2) M10 x 1.5 x 70 hex bolts, (2) M10 x 1.5 hex flange nuts, (4) 7/16 inch fishwire, (4) 7/16-14 x 1.5 inch carriage bolts, (4) 7/16-14 inch hex flange nuts, and (4) 0.250 x 0.88 x 2.25 inch square hole spacers (part number CM-SP2).
Fishwire is used to route (2) 7/16 inch bolts and (2) CM-SP2 spacers from the access hole to the mounting holes on each frame rail. The fishwires are kept attached until the hitch is raised into position, then the fishwires are threaded into the mounting holes to secure the hitch.
The hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 350 lbs tongue weight. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than the hitch rating. Check your vehicle's owner manual for the manufacturer's limit.
Yes. The manual states that all non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this product must be supported by CURT 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for further information.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a retightening interval, so contact CURT technical support at 800.798.0813 for guidance on maintenance schedules.
The CURT 12185 is designed for use with ball mount number 45521. Two ball options are available: 45571 (1 7/8 inch ball) and 45572 (2 inch ball). A euro mount option is also available.
