However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Toyota Avalon and Toyota Camry (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Toyota Camry (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

Installation difficulty is rated as moderate. The installation requires exhaust hanger removal, heat shield and underbody panel trimming, access hole enlargement, and torque specifications. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized CURT installer.
No drilling is required. However, access hole enlargement is required on both frame rails, and trimming of heat shields and the plastic underbody panel is required. A die grinder with cutoff wheel is needed for these modifications.
Two types of trimming are required: (1) Heat shield trimming using the heat shield trim diagram as reference, with dimensions of 4.25 inches and 2.00 inches marked; (2) Plastic underbody panel trimming using the panel trim diagram as reference, with dimensions of 3.25 inches and 1.00 inches marked. Both heat shields and the underbody panel must be reinstalled after trimming. A die grinder with cutoff wheel is recommended for these cuts.
Step 3 requires enlargement of the existing access hole in both frame rails. The exact dimensions for the enlarged hole are not specified in the manual. After enlargement, a 1/2" fishwire (carriage bolt) and CM-SP10 spacer are inserted into each enlarged access hole. Contact CURT technical support at 877-287-8634 for specific hole size requirements.
You do not need to remove the entire exhaust system, but you must lower it. Remove (2) rubber isolators per muffler and (1) rubber isolator forward of the muffler. On Japan-built vehicles, also remove the tie-down bracket from the passenger side frame rail. On USA-built vehicles, remove the rear exhaust hanger from the driver side frame rail. On dual exhaust vehicles, remove rear exhaust hangers from both frame rails. Support the exhaust to prevent damage during this process. Save all removed parts for reinstallation.
Three different torque specifications apply: M12 hardware (hex head cap screws) must be torqued to 79 ft-lbs; M8 hardware (flange bolts) must be torqued to 23 ft-lbs; 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. A torque wrench is required to achieve these specifications.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Lower the exhaust by removing rubber isolators and exhaust hangers as applicable to your vehicle's origin (Japan or USA built) and exhaust configuration (single or dual). Support the exhaust to prevent damage. (2) Remove and trim heat shields and plastic underbody panel using the provided diagrams, then reinstall. (3) Enlarge the access holes in both frame rails and insert the 1/2" fishwire carriage bolts with CM-SP10 spacers. (4) Raise the hitch into position, secure with provided hardware while reinstalling exhaust hangers, apply torque specifications, and reinstall the underbody panel.
Yes. The plastic underbody panel must be removed in step 2 to allow access for trimming using the panel trim diagram as reference. After trimming, the panel is reinstalled. The panel is removed again in step 4 after the hitch is secured and then reinstalled.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Support the exhaust to prevent damage when lowering it. Before beginning installation, read all instructions thoroughly. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. CURT 11576 is rated for 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight, but your vehicle's manufacturer may specify a lower limit. Check your vehicle's owner manual or manufacturer specifications to determine the safe towing capacity for your specific vehicle.
After installation, periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This maintenance is essential for safe operation and to maintain the product warranty.
The manual states to periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound, but does not specify an exact inspection interval. Regular inspection before towing is recommended as a best practice.

Part number 56544 is designed for passenger cars with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. Check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm it has a 12-volt negative ground system. The manual does not specify individual vehicle makes, models, or years, so contact Curt Manufacturing or your dealer to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
The 56544 is a wiring converter that allows you to connect a trailer to a passenger car. It converts the vehicle's taillight signals to a 4-flat trailer connector. The converter handles signal circuits (3.0 amps per side for turn signals) and tail/running circuits (6.0 amps total). It includes a black converter box that mounts in the trunk and connects to the vehicle's factory taillight wiring and battery.
You will need: ratchet, 10mm socket, socket extension, cutting tool, wire crimper, wire stripper, panel trim removal tool, and electrical tape. The manual lists these as required tools. You will also use the double-sided tape and cable ties provided with the product.
The product includes: a black converter box, white wire with ring terminal for grounding, yellow, green, red, and brown wires for signal and lighting circuits, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties for securing wires, a 4-flat dust cover, and a fuse holder with 10-amp fuse. A ring terminal for battery connection and a screw for ground attachment are also provided.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate the vehicle's battery in the engine compartment on the driver side and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation. The Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet also states: disconnect negative battery (-) cable before wiring the power wire.
You must open the trunk and remove the floor covering. Then release the four (4) push fasteners and remove them from the scuff panel. Using the panel trim tool, remove the scuff panel and set it aside for reinstallation later. This gives access to the taillight wiring harness and the area where the converter box will be mounted.
Locate the white electrical housings where the trunk wall liner meets the scuff plate. On the driver side, locate the taillight wiring harness. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Then run the green wire along the back of the trunk below the skid plate to the passenger side and install the green wire into the passenger side factory harness.
Locate a flat clean surface behind the trunk liner and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The manual emphasizes: failure to mount the box in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire. The box must be mounted in a protected location inside the trunk.
On the driver side, locate the ground bolt and remove it using a 10mm socket. Locate the white wire with a ring terminal on the converter box and secure it to the frame using the 10mm ground bolt. Be sure to replace any other ground rings that were attached to the ground bolt. Failure to replace ground wires will affect other parts of the vehicle electrical system.
Use 12 GA wire or larger to route from the vehicle battery to the converter. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. The fuse holder with 10-amp fuse is provided. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete. Exceeding the 10-amp rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
The converter uses the following wire colors: yellow for left turn signal, green for right turn signal, red for brake signal, and brown for taillight/running lights. The white wire with ring terminal is the ground wire. These colors connect to the corresponding factory taillight circuits on the vehicle.
Route the 12 GA black power wire from the vehicle battery to the converter as shown on the provided Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet. Take care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Signal circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side (for left and right turn signals). Tail/running circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Do not lay tools across the positive battery terminal (typically noted with red covers or a red '+' symbol), as this can cause a ground short resulting in sparks and/or electrical shocks. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring the power wire.
Once the 12-volt power wire is connected to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. The manual states: all steps must be followed to ensure the product will function properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. The manual does not specify an inspection interval, so consult the manual or contact Curt Manufacturing for recommended maintenance frequency.
The manual rates the installation difficulty as 'Easy' and states that installation difficulty levels are based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer level of expertise, condition of the vehicle, and proper tools and equipment. The manual does not explicitly require professional installation, but does require all steps to be followed correctly for proper function.
The 56544 is designed for passenger cars with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. Confirm your vehicle has this system in the owner's manual, then contact Curt or your dealer to verify fitment for your specific make, model, and year.
Yes. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation and before wiring the power wire. Fasten the wire down and away from the battery during installation.
The battery connection must use a 10-amp maximum fuse. A fuse holder with 10-amp fuse is provided. Install the fuse after all other steps are complete. Exceeding 10 amps can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Use 12 GA wire or larger to route from the vehicle battery to the converter. Route through existing grommets or add a grommet to protect from sharp edges.
Signal circuits: 3.0 amps per side. Tail/running circuits: 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
