The Curt 56468 is a powered converter lead and custom wiring harness designed for SUVs and vans. It converts your vehicle's taillight signals to a 4-flat connector for towing a trailer. The system includes a black converter box that processes the vehicle's taillight wiring (left turn, right turn, brake, and tail lights) and outputs them through a 4-flat connector that connects to a trailer's lighting system.
The Curt 56468 is designed for SUVs and vans with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. The manual does not specify particular makes, model years, or body styles beyond this general category. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
No. The Curt 56468 converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. It will not function on 24-volt systems or vehicles with positive ground systems.
You will need: a ratchet, a 10mm socket, a socket extension, a Phillips screwdriver, a small flathead screwdriver, and a panel trim removal tool. The manual rates the installation difficulty as Easy.
The kit includes: a black converter box, custom wiring harness with yellow and green wires, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a 4-flat connector, a 4-flat dust cover, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties (zip ties) for securing wires, and a ground screw. A 10-amp fuse holder is also included and must be installed after all other installation steps are complete.
Yes. You must locate the vehicle battery and disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation process. Reconnect the negative battery terminal only after all other installation steps are complete, in Step 11.
Yes. You must open the tailgate all the way and raise the glass window in the open position. You will then remove the taillight trim from both sides of the vehicle by removing four bolts (two on each side) with a 10mm socket and eight screw push fasteners (four on each side) with a Phillips screwdriver. The trim is removed by pulling straight out, starting at the bottom and working upward.
After removing the taillight trim, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. On the driver side, locate the custom wiring end with the yellow wire. Route the yellow wire behind the taillight wiring and wrap it around the rear bumper so the connectors are above the bumper and the black converter box is below. Insert the custom wiring end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side using the wire with the green wire.
The black converter box should be mounted on the top side of the frame using the provided double-sided tape. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. The converter box should be positioned below the rear bumper, with the taillight connectors above the bumper.
Locate a grounding point such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint—use an abrasive pad or paper to remove rust and paint if necessary. Secure the white ground wire with the ring terminal to the existing fastener, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole and use the provided ground screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the 4-flat connector along the rear bumper and secure it with zip ties as needed. Mount the 4-flat connector close to the receiver tube. After installation is complete, install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Drilling may be required only for the ground wire connection. If a suitable existing screw or bolt is not available on the vehicle frame, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground screw. Before drilling, you must check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint.
Signal circuits (left turn and right turn): 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 6.0 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
The custom wiring harness uses the following colors: Yellow = Left turn, Green = Right turn, Red = Brake, Brown = Tail light. The white ground wire is used for grounding to the vehicle frame. The black wire from the converter connects to the positive battery terminal.
Route a 12-gauge wire (or larger) from the converter to the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring the power wire. Connect the black wire to the positive battery terminal using a ring terminal. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties. Install the 10-amp fuse holder after all other steps are complete.
Use a 10-amp fuse maximum. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp max fuse. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.

Once the custom wiring harness is installed, verify that it is functioning by attaching the 4-flat connector to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights. The taillights on the tow vehicle should function along with the taillights on the towing vehicle. You can also use a test light to verify proper function. Ensure all wires and connections are secure and show no visible damage before testing.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Check the 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. No other routine maintenance is specified in the manual.
