The Curt 56498 is a powered converter that allows you to connect a trailer lighting harness to your passenger car's factory taillights. It converts the car's taillight signals (left turn, right turn, brake, and running lights) to a 4-flat trailer connector. The converter includes a black converter box that mounts in the bumper area and routes power from your vehicle battery through a fused connection.
The Curt 56498 is designed for passenger cars where the taillights are accessible from outside the trunk. It is compatible only with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models or years are supported. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
No. The Curt 56498 converter system is designed for 12-volt negative ground systems only and cannot be used on 24-volt systems.
You will need: ratchet, wire cutter, Torx T-27 socket, wire stripper, small flathead screwdriver, panel trim removal tool, fish wire (or stiff wire, rope or string), and crimp tool. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: a black converter box, a 4-flat dust cover, double-sided tape for mounting the converter, cable ties for securing wires, a fuse holder with 15-amp fuse (maximum), a white ground wire with ring terminal, a black power wire, butt connectors, and a screw for grounding the white ground wire to the vehicle body. A separate 'Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet' is included as the last page of the manual.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery during the installation process. If the battery was disconnected at the beginning, reconnect the negative battery terminal after all other installation steps are complete and before testing.
The installation is rated as 'Easy' based on time and effort involved. However, the actual difficulty may vary depending on your experience level, the condition of your vehicle, and whether you have the proper tools and equipment.
The first step is to locate your vehicle battery by consulting your vehicle owner's manual, then disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery to keep it secure during the installation process.
Open the vehicle hatch. Using a small flathead screwdriver, open the taillight fastener covers. Use a Torx T-27 socket to remove the two fasteners from both taillights. Remove each taillight by pulling straight back from the taillight cavity. Once removed, flip the light over and separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Set the taillights aside.
Fish wire is a tool used to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole (a cavity where you cannot see the other end). To use it: insert the fish wire through the blind hole until it sticks out the other side, then use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull back up. If the fish wire gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it. Fish wire can be made from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string depending on what is needed.
Starting on the driver side, use fish wire to run it down the cavity until the end is located. Attach the side of the harness with the yellow wire to the fish wire and carefully pull up, then attach to the factory side of the harness. Route the green wire over to the passenger side, securing with cable ties as needed. Repeat the fish wire process on the passenger side with the green wire. Attach the taillights to the custom harness and set in place.
On the driver side, locate a flat spot up in the bumper cover. Adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape and/or cable tie.
Route the black 12 GA power wire (or larger) from the vehicle battery to the converter, following the 'Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet' on the last page of the manual. The wire must be routed to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties. Connect the black wire to the positive (+) battery terminal using a ring terminal. Install the fuse holder with 15-amp fuse (maximum) after all other steps are complete.
Attach the ring terminal of the white ground wire to the vehicle body using the screw provided. If necessary, drill a 3/32" hole to mount the ground wire. This completes the grounding connection for the converter system.
Route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle next to the hitch. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Drilling may be required only for the ground wire connection. You may need to drill a 3/32" hole in the vehicle body to mount the white ground wire ring terminal using the provided screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be behind or under the surface to avoid personal injury or property damage. No other drilling is required for the basic installation.
Signal circuits (left turn and right turn): 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 6.0 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
Two Torx T-27 fasteners are used on each taillight. Use a Torx T-27 socket with a ratchet to remove them.
The power wire must be 12 GA (gauge) or larger. The wire is routed from the vehicle battery to the converter and must be protected by a 15-amp maximum fuse.
If necessary, drill a 3/32" hole in the vehicle body to mount the white ground wire ring terminal using the provided screw.
Green = Right turn signal. Red = Brake signal. Yellow = Left turn signal. Brown = Taillight (running lights). White = Ground. Black = Power (positive battery connection).
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. The fuse holder is included in the kit and should be installed after all other installation steps are complete. Exceeding this fuse rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. The white ground wire also uses a ring terminal, which is attached to the vehicle body with the provided screw.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation and fasten it down and away from the battery. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items behind or under surfaces to avoid personal injury or property damage. When routing the power wire, avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse.
Once the 12-volt power wire is connected to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the product will function properly.
After testing the harness with a test light, 4-flat tester, or functioning trailer, reinstall all items removed during installation. If the negative battery terminal was disconnected at the beginning, reconnect it. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. This helps maintain proper function and prevent electrical issues.
The Curt 56498 is designed for passenger cars with taillights accessible from outside the trunk and 12-volt negative ground systems only. Consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact Curt Manufacturing to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle make, model and year.
Yes. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Reconnect it after all other steps are complete and before testing.
15 amps maximum. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
Signal circuits: 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
