Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Toyota Pickup (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 6,000 lbs. WD and 600 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Toyota pickup and Tacoma (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The kit includes: 4× 0.250" × 1.50" × 3.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP4); 2× 1/2"-13 UNC 4" carriage bolts (10-10309); 12× 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts (20-00062); 6× 1/2"-13 UNC 2" carriage bolts (10-10288); 4× 0.250" × 1.50" × 2.00" square hole spacers (CM-SP1); 4× 1/2"-13 UNC 2" hex cap screws (10-10286); 8× 7/16"-14 UNC 2" carriage bolts (10-10317); and 8× 7/16"-14 UNC serrated flange nuts (20-00172).
If your vehicle has a bumper, yes—you must remove the bumper from its brackets and remove the brackets from the frame before beginning hitch installation. If your vehicle does not have a bumper, you can proceed directly to positioning the hitch side brackets on the frame.
Remove all but a thin layer of undercoating from the attaching surfaces on the frame before positioning the hitch side brackets. This applies to both vehicles with and without bumpers.
For vehicles with bumpers: (1) Remove bumper and brackets from frame; (2) Remove undercoating from attaching surfaces; (3) Position hitch side brackets on frame and insert 1/2" × 4" carriage bolts, 1/4" × 1.5" × 3" spacers, and 1/2" flange nuts into forward frame holes (loosely); (4) Loosely install 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts and 1/4" × 1.5" × 3" spacers at bottom of frame rail; (5) Position crosstube assembly and install 7/16" × 2" carriage bolts with 7/16" flange nuts, torque to 70 lb.-ft.; (6) Install bumper brackets according to bracket position (inside, outside, or both); (7) Attach bumper brackets with 1/2" × 2" hex bolts and 1/2" flange nuts; (8) Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb.-ft. For vehicles without bumpers, follow steps 1–6 but omit bumper removal and bracket repositioning.
The positioning depends on where your bumper brackets are located on the frame. If brackets are on the outside of the frame, sandwich the hitch sides between the frame and bumper brackets. If brackets are on the inside of the frame, position hitch sides on the outside of the frame and install bumper brackets in their original position. If brackets are on both inside and outside, reverse the inside brackets (swap left for right and right for left) and sandwich the hitch sides between the frame and outer bumper brackets. Vehicles with inside or inside/outside bracket configurations may require fabrication of frame spacers by the installer.

No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses existing frame holes for attachment. However, depending on your vehicle's bumper bracket configuration, you may need to fabricate frame spacers.
Frame spacers may need to be fabricated by the installer if your vehicle has bumper brackets on the inside of the frame or on both the inside and outside of the frame. Vehicles with bumper brackets on the outside of the frame require two 1/4" × 1" × 2" square hole spacers at each attachment point (these are included in the kit). Vehicles with bumper brackets on the inside of the frame do not require spacers. The manual does not specify exact criteria for when fabrication is necessary; consult the installer or Curt Manufacturing if unsure.
The 1/2" × 4" carriage bolts at the forward frame holes and the 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts at the bottom of the frame rail should be installed loosely initially. The 7/16" crosstube bolts are torqued to 70 lb.-ft. during assembly. All 1/2" fasteners are then torqued to 110 lb.-ft. as the final step.

On the driver's side, insert the custom harness end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Route the harness end with the green wire to the passenger side and repeat the process.
Drilling may be required for the ground connection. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no existing screw is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The box should be positioned in a convenient location that does not interfere with vehicle operation.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties to prevent tangling and damage.
