Yes, the Curt 55356 is designed for Jeep Wrangler and Jeep TJ (Canada). It is also compatible with SUVs, mini and full-sized vans. Confirm your specific vehicle model matches these applications before purchasing.
The Curt 55356 is a custom wiring harness that connects your vehicle's taillight wiring to a trailer connector. It allows you to safely power trailer lights from your vehicle's electrical system.
The manual lists 'Tools Needed' as N/A, meaning no special tools are required for installation. However, you will need a test light or a properly wired trailer to test the harness after installation.
The harness includes a screw and ring terminal for grounding the white ground wire, and a 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact Curt Manufacturing or your vehicle manufacturer for guidance on this step.
The vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors are located underneath the vehicle next to the rear bumper, behind the protective covers. The driver-side connector is on the driver side, and the passenger-side connector is on the passenger side.
First, remove the protective covers under the vehicle next to the rear bumper. Locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors and carefully separate them from the taillight housing without damaging the locking tabs. Insert the custom harness end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors on the driver side, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side using the custom harness end with the green wire.
The yellow wire connects to the driver-side taillight connector, the green wire connects to the passenger-side taillight connector, and the white wire is the ground wire that must be secured to a suitable grounding point on the vehicle frame.
Drilling may be required for the ground wire. If a suitable grounding point with an existing screw and nut is not available on the vehicle frame near the connector, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the ground wire.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw if an existing screw with nut is not available on the vehicle frame.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for the specific lamp load rating.
After installation, test the wiring harness for proper function using a test light or by connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the harness functions properly.
After connecting the harness, locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If one is not available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole in an area free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw. Then reinstall all items removed during installation and install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
When separating the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors from the taillight housing, take care not to damage the locking tabs. When inserting the custom harness connectors, ensure they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
